I met the first park ranger to use bear mace on a Grizz. She was in the Teition National park just south of yellowstone. The Grizz stopped dead in its tracks and came no closer and turned and left. Granted the bear was so close the ranger could smell the nasty breakfast the bear had from its heavy breathing.  :twocents: Bear mace works.
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

“I don't know what his decision-making process was. He chose to get away from the animal. Why he chose to go into the Yellowstone River, I just don't know.”

Well maybe he didn't want to become lunch for the pup's? But I don't have a wolf degree like they do.

I wonder which side of the wolf issue he's on now?

I meant that it's the guy manipulating the report that is the wolf promoter, I have no idea who the guy was that got nearly attacked. Sorry about the confusion.

You know, past story manipulations aside, I don't think it's far from the mind to believe that he may have just pepper sprayed the wolf and ran like the dickins into a river without looking back. Not everyone has nerves of steel to back away slowly and keep an eye on the predator until your out of the area. I would think most tourists just run along into YNP without proper knowledge or training with the wildlife to know what to do. In any case, if he indeed pepper sprayed the wolf, the wolf is not a bear who will ignore it to give chase, I think the wolf would definately be deterred.
Why do you think "the wolf would definately deterred"?

Well, if he got the wolf directly in the eyes and nose... yeah, I'd say the wolf had more to worry about after that. Pepper spray hurts. ALOT.

My friends can was accidentally triggered(don't keep them on a key chain!) while we were in a car. It filled the space and got us all.

I can understand why a person would climb out of reach or get in the water, in my opinion the guy was thinking intelligently.

But if you run like that(unless the river was REALLY close by), that triggers the chase instinct.

Elk and other prey often go to water to escape predators?

I didn't say going into the water was a bad idea. I just don't know what the distance was between the den and the rivver. If he turned and ran a great distance, that might not have been the best idea(depending on circumstances).

This is another of Manure's expert areas, BP. The man obviously made the wolves attack him through his ignorance of the fight or flight triggers. It's widely known by people like Manure that any negative or hostile interaction between wolves and man are the man's fault.

Did I say that? No. I never said anything was his fault. I am just questioning the circumstances. He could have been chased... or he could have just pepper sprayed a wolf giving him a warning growl and ran like hell without looking back, assuming he was being chased. I really doubt the 'escorted' claim. Wolves don't escort bears away from their den, they chase them off. The wolf could have followed to make sure he was moving along, if it indeed followed him. And don't put words in my mouth, considering I don't do that to you guys.

Breaking News: It was just discovered the 5 wolves had just returned from a showing of the movie "The Grey".  :):)

I was thinking the same thing!  :chuckle:
Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate. - Psalm 127:3-5
