Since its the off season, i figured i would share the story of my first buck.
My family grew up in Omak, Wa so that is where all of my early hunting was done. I remember getting out of school early the friday before the opener and headed up to my uncles place with my grandpa. I was so excited that i couldnt sleep the whole night, even though this was going to be my third year hunting, the 2 previous years i had harvested a nice muley doe. This was the first year they took away the any deer hunt for youth in the Sinlahekin. Luckily i was one of the lucky 150 youth to draw the tag!
The alarm went off and away we went, driving up the Sinlahekin Valley in the dark we had a monster whitetail cross the road in front of us, that got my heart pumping! We arrived at our spot where we were going to start the hunt. My grandpa and i split up from my uncle and cousin and we took off. Over the first little hump from the truck we saw a group of about 15 does standing there about 75 yards off. My grandpa and i looked them over with the binos and he asked if i wanted to shoot one of them, i said no, its the first day ill wait for a buck. No sooner had i said that i noticed one of those "does" had little antlers on it. I said that i will shoot that buck right there tho! My grandpa said ok go for it so i got a rest on a log and let my Ruger M77 30.06 rip, dropped the little guy in his tracks!
Got up to him and found a little 1x2 and i was sure proud of him! My grandpa was probably even more proud of me. We radioed my uncle and they came over to us and helped us drag it back. At the truck some guy saw us loading and told us it was 3pt min and we had to explain to him that this deer was legal, i drew the youth tag. He went on his way and so did we, a little down the road we spotted some deer up on the hill and got out. My cousin, uncle and I went up and around them to try and cut them off and my cousin ended up harvesting one of the big does!
Thanks for reading, it is one hunt that i still remember every little detail about, funny how you can remember all those things!
