H&R Ultra Hunter Rifle

I have this rifle in .308, I bought it years ago just to have a single shot rifle. This rifle shoots 1" groups at 100yds and has a 3.5lb trigger and has laminated butt stock and forend.  My wife liked shooting it and has taken a couple of Deer with it. She hasn't hunted in a few years and since then I have picked up a Ruger 77 in .308 and a Remington 788 in .308.
I have a 10yr old who I would like to get a .243 to shoot for this upcoming season, he drew a 574 youth deer permit.
He has a Remington .22 with a scope that he shoots well.

My question is should I
#1  Send the Ultra Rifle back to H&R to have it fitted with a .243 barrel and would probably have it fitted with a .270 barrel also, it would be about $300 shipped back to me for two barrels and a new forend.

#2 I could buy a bolt action .243, I have been eye balling the new Ruger American and the Vanguards

What do you guys think or have for suggestions?

You will never have enough guns- Go get a .243 for your son and then reward your smart decision and purchase yourself a new hand gun.

I'd save your money and have your son use the 308. You can get the "Managed Recoil" loads if that is an issue. There are also some standard loads available with 125 grain bullets that should be fairly light on recoil.

Thanks Bobcat, I didn't think about the managed recoil loads. I'll look into them.

Thats a great Idea but I don't think the queen bee would approve

buy a savage 243 bolt action in synthetic stock, they are cheap guns but shoot and handle great, very light and you wont have to worry about the youngster nockn the crap out of it....
