Bella's 1st pheasant hunt
« on: September 30, 2012, 07:20:01 PM »
I got tired of working around my place so I decided it was time to introduce my pup to actual hunting of Pheasants.  I'm on the westside so the mornings are usually a mess at the release sites.  Not a place for a rookie dog.  A buddy and I waited until this afternoon and went out to see if any of the training has stuck with Bella.

Short story is she got 4 birds up in about 4 hours and 4 birds fell.  I don't think that's too bad for coming through after the masses hunted the morning.  She did good.  I am a proud papa!

Very nice. Did you head out to Ebey? I got one rooster there this morning. It was not that bad surprisingly, everyone was pretty chill and careful. At least from what I saw.

Yes, it was Ebey.  I do the afternoon thing at other sites too.  Usually works for me.

I am going out there in the morning if you are interested. Should be pretty empty.

Congratulations on the birds with the pup.  Nice looking dog.

I will be going to Stillwater tomorrow morning and love those empty mornings.  Good luck Orca.

Hi Goldeneye,

That's a beautiful dog you have there!

Is she a “pointing retriever”?

She has come a long way since I saw her hopping around the front seat of your truck.

Not that I knew of since I got her.  However I just found out recently that her mothers brother received his Master Hunter title and also received a title (or award) for being a pointing lab as well.  So it might be in her genes somewhere.  3 of these birds got up wild so no point was possible on those we all had to hustle to get a clean shot on them.  The last bird held tight and she did freeze on it for a good 30 second stare before it flew.  I think there might be some pointing lab tendency in there somewhere, it'll only work if the birds hold for her though.

Looks like a good time.  I should really get my yellow lab out there.
