Valley Quail
« on: September 19, 2012, 11:24:50 PM »
Does anyone here hunt these guys with any success on the western side of the state?

If so, just how are you guys identifying them before shooting?

I've never gone after these but am considering it if they are viable in this part of the state.

No, for quail you really need to go to Yakima, Wenatchee, Chelan, Okanogan, etc.

I have seen them around Ft Lewis. I was amazed on the first sighting, since I thought they were only on the east side of the Cascades.

they are around, maybe not as many as on the Eastside of the state but more than most people think. the problem is they are mostly on little hobby farms and small chunks of rural private property and getting permission to hunt them is a tough proposition.

22shtr, the wife and I ran across a covey of ten for the first time on the fort about two weeks back.  Then the wife ran across another covey today.  I'd like to think that their numbers are on the rise... can't say really, I've only lived here for about 4 years.  Seeing a lot of different birds this year on the wet side.

I've seen a few birds here on Whidbey, but they were near the beach and flushed back into the blackberries on private property.  With as tasty as they are, I won't hunt them if they are going to be in the berry bushes.
