Hornaday SST's
« on: June 19, 2012, 09:56:38 AM »
Anyone have any experience with these bullets? I just picked up some 162 gn for my 7 mag to give the a try. If anyone has used them and has some load advice, I'd love to hear it.

Eastmans hunting journal just did an article about elk bullets that was one they tested.   Seems to mushroom well doesn't contain weight well.

I shot them last year in my .257 A.I.  will punch paper with the rest and use the brass..... bullet disintegrated on impact.  Did it do its job?  Yep deer dropped in its tracks.  However, I want something that will penetrate a bit better before fragmenting completely and totally...

I shoot 225's out of my .338 and have been pleased with the results. I have never recovered one. I believe that they do fragment at least some because of the MASSIVE damage found when game is opened up. It has been suggested and I have no grounds to argue it that the bigger bore SST's may have a heavier jacket on them.  :dunno:

Dude.. try the Accubonds..  You will not be disappointed in your .338 WM.  Handloads right at 2850 fps.  Using Reloader 19    :chuckle: :chuckle:

They hold together well at close range too.  Buddy shot his 4x bull last year at 25 yds.  recovered both rounds beautifully mushroomed even after hitting major bone.

6.5 x 55 with 140 SST's....same experience.   Bullets do not hold together well, but they do a lot of damage.  I'm not really a fan.  I like to eat venison, not throw lbs of bloodshot meat in the trash.

I like the boat tail design of the SST's and get about the velocity you are talking about. We got better speed with r19 but it scattered the shots horrible.  :dunno:

Wow... we are getting 1/2 MOA out to 300 yards.. at 400 it jumps to 1 MOA...  terrible I know..   :chuckle: :chuckle:

This is out of 4 different rifles - 2 Sakos, 1 Howa, and 1 Ruger...

Would not have believed it either without seeing it myself...

Well other than one of the Sakos  these are all stock including triggers....

but, if we all liked the same thing, it would be a boring place... everyone would drive Fords.. .eat steaks, date blondes, etc...  lol
