alpine lakes wilderness

Hey guys, i'm preparing for the early archery elk hunt in 249. This will be my first high hunt, and i'm just wondering what all to prepare for while in the wilderness. I've read that I'll need a permit to camp, and also I've read I don't need a permit to camp. I'm planning on being up there for at least five days, maybe more depending on weather and such... I've got a spot i'm thinking of, and will be doing quite a bit of scouting. But really i'm just looking for some pointers as what to bring, what to be mindful of etc. thanks

Most trail heads have the permit your supposed to fill out available at the trail head in a box of some sort, You fill out the required section, drop half in the box and attach the other half you or your backpack.

As you obviously know, 249 is any elk and if you see any elk at all, you are doing better than most. Good luck!!!

you will need a wilderness trails pass to park at the trailhead. You will also need bug spray because the alpine is where the mosquito and all species of biting flies originated from!

Good info. the heat is a big concern of mine, im hoping that if I do take an animal, I'll be near enough a creek, or something to help cool it down after dressing, and that may determine whether I take a shot, but then the weather will be a factor as well. Bugs are bugs, they suck... But actually the any elk designation is what led me to try this hunt, and a friend said he knew where some elk were last year on the high buck for modern, so I figured if check it out. so being fairly new to hunting, from a conservation standpoint, an any elk designation leads me to believe that Wdfw doesn't want elk in the wilderness? Or am I off track?

Good luck seeing an elk. The state just doesn't want to manage elk in that area. There are a few scattered thru there. Some hunters hit them pretty hard up the Icicle.

Hey guys/gals. Thanks for the great site! I've been a member for a couple of months, but this is my first post.
A ton of Elk sign up there this weekend (I went on a 3 day scouting trip)...but in some spots that would be damn-near-impossible to get anything out of...without help, that is.
PM me and I'll give you more info
