I think we should preserve the original listing so when it dissapears we still have it. If it is legal it just reinforces that the playing field is not equal.

If it is indian folks guiding people on the reservation it would seem legal to me. I believe they allow that on the reservations. I suppose it beats going up to Canada or somewhere else if you are interested in that style of bear hunting (not knockin it). There was another topic on this. Although it did not question legality as much as it questioned other things.

legal as far as I know. I guess because they are on their own reservation? Seen a hunting show on tv where they hunted the quinault, didn't believe it when they said they were going to be baiting bear in washington.

Anything and everything is legal on reservations. They make their own rules.

If it weren't for the ban, some of you guys would be paying Bearman Rick, to hunt bears, over bait, just outside this very reservation.

I say it's too bad, for Rick, who was stopped from doing something he loved, that also put a roof over his head.

And good for the Quinalts, that they haven't lost their own rights to hunt and trap how they want, and that they see something more traditional, than casinos, as a viable economic opportunity for their children.

If the chance ever comes, that I can trap there, I'll be the first one waiting in line, for a license.

I wish this young man, and any hunters who hire him, the best of luck. :)

Yes, It's legal. I saw a show on the OutDoor Ch. about an Indian guided hunt on the reservation. They also bait the bears. They said it's to keep the numbers down, looks to me it's just another way to make money off of there RIGHT to hunt and fish and take all they want.

yes it is legit. I am in the works with a kalispel tribal member to get baited bear hunts approved on the kalispel reservation here in pend oreille county and I would run the hunts through my guide service for the tribal member.

The Apache tribes in NM used to offer a similar hunt for elk, maybe they still do.  The Apache manage their elk herds better than the state does and could offer a quality hunt.  The state of NM was incensed that this was going on and they would arrest their clients as soon as they left the res. with an elk.  I believe some rich Texan got arrested and took it to court with the tribe and he and the tribe won.

I doubt if the state of WA would ever question what goes on reservations here.

i never made enough money to put a roof over my head. that was becauce i had the wrong client's. i did it from 93-97. the tv show was with scott Haugen he made it look like every one would get trophy's. the price's went up of after that show. money talk's. there are only a couple good guided's. it would be great if they could hunt the whole Rezervation but they only hunt crane creek a small area. dont know why. very large very large bear's there. my bussiness liscense is for guiding and R&R CALLS. dont wish to guide not much money in it.like the spotted Owl crap they never stopped logging.  they can do what ever there elder's vote on. i hunt the san carlos apachie indian Reservation in Arizona with the predatormaster's hunt. this year i might spend a month going after cougar. it cost $20.00 a day. do alot of research before you get a guide. Hunting is becoming a Rich man's sport. Rick

When I first moved out here, a few pals and I went up there and camped, not knowing it was not permissible. I live on a rez, so I figured it wouldnt be too much different.   The place was awefully thick, dont think they spray around their timber.  Seen a few bears but never killed one. Ran into a few tribe guys. They said they were out deer hunting. Told us good luck on the bear.

I saw a hunt with Haugen using a muzzle loader and he shot a dink, maybe 200 lbs tops. But I have seen a couple pics of a monster that Haugen shot on the rez, a real hog.

I just find it funny that as soon as the ban went into affect for us, then they all the sudden "have a damage  problem" and need to kill "brother bear".

At least they can't hunt and kill the "Real Bear"
Some people spend their entire life wondering if they made a difference. Marines don't have that problem.

I'm 43 and still have those ten year old dreams...  Bitter, why?  It is something they are doing, does it really impact you, not trying to get a feud going but curious.  It is the same as other businesses, they are doing what they can do to make money, really no different than that.  I know alot of guides, haven't met one that is in for the money... Never met a rich guide either????  Maybe in Texas but no where else I've been...   A good friend's father charges $15,000 per Brown Bear on Kodiak, but gains about $5,000 after everything multiply by 4 hunters and your talking $20,000 for eight weeks of work, then he has fall Moose and other bears somewhere else but really doesn't bring in a huge cash flow.  Hunting under bait is great opportunity for folks that might not be able to hunt any other way.  I think it becomes a problem if hunted to the point there are no more bears.  For years we keep taken bears from one stand.  If managed right, your only taking the larger boars, hopefully, and others will move into their area to establish dominance and young ones will grow up to make additional challenges...  If I could do it here, no doubt, I'd have the biggest -baddest pile of food awaiting their appetites every spring....  Maybe, I'm a bit of a one sided judgement and varied opinion but, every bear taken is going to save a group of elk and deer...  The bears, unless it is opened fully across the state to every conceivable method of hunting, their populations will survive in the most unlikely spots imaginable... And flourish in the remote areas...  I know I am not from here but every time the tribes do something everyone is making the blankets statements about how freaking un-fair it is for them to be able to do this or that.  I can understand you frustration to a point but it seems more out of jealousy than what they are doing is wrong???  Oh well back to the fishing page...  now that I stirred the pot...
