300 WSM-RL17-180grn TSX

Does anybody have any opinions where to start? The Barnes reloading manual does not have any loads for the RL-17. The Alliant website only used Speer bullets when providing recommendations (66gr Max). I called Barnes and they said to to start 10% lower than the Alliant recommendations and then work my way up (same as Alliant recs). The Barnes representative then added that since I am using a full copper round, I would like be at mid range in regards to pressure at the 59.4 gr mark (-10%). Does this sound right?

Also, I read that when using the TSX's I need to make the CAOL sit .05 to .07 off the lands.

I'm new to reloading, so any help is appreciated.

I have read that Barnes bullets shoot at higher pressure than other bullets for a given powder charge. I would start with some at 59.5 60.5 61.5 and 62.5 load each at 0.05 off lands and watch for pressure. If no pressure go up a bit more. Until you hit Max. Then play with seating depth. For groups

Thanks! From looking at load data on other sites. I've found 63.5 gr, with a 180 gr TSX set .07 off the lands to be the "holy grail" load. Look forward to working them up!

The info I was given by Alliant is to use IMR 4350 data as a starting point for RL 17 data, and then slowly work up from there.

Based on the Barnes #4 load book the 180gr TSX load for IMR 4350 starts at 57.5 and maxes out at 65.5gr.  I would personally start at 62.0gr of RL 17 and work up in .5gr increments until I started to see pressure signs, then back down .5gr and call that my max.

I have used it to replace all of my IMR 4350 loads,evan though i have a lot 4350,better velocity and good accuracy,use 4350 data as starting point.

RL-17 and a Barnes 180 TSX seated at .055 off the lands is shooting 3/4" groups in my son's 300 wsm.  I think you have a good starting point and work up plan.

I've never shot an all copper round and I just want to give it a try. Heard really good things about them.

Good to hear wsmnut! I was shooting sub moa with factory winchester rounds so I am hoping that this will take it to the next level.
