Need help identifying this ammo
« on: June 21, 2012, 08:02:33 PM »
We are having garage sale this weekend and I have some military surplus ammo that I would like to get rid of.

I am fairly sure it is 7.62x39.  I think it was made in 1970 based on some numbers on the "spam" can but I'm not sure.

The can measures 4" high x 14" long x 6" wide and it is heavy.  I'm not sure how much ammo is in it?  I'm thinking 640 rounds or 700 rounds..........maybe more. :dunno:  I've searched the internet, came up with some good info on youtube and elsewhere, but I haven't found a can with the same look and writing.  This one has pull chords to open the can, whereas most others I've seen you need a can opener type tool.

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out a good price that I should ask, but I need to become a little more knowledgeable first.  My father in law had an SKS and AK47 that he shot this kind of ammo out of.  He told me to shoot it up when I had the AK and SKS here, but I never got around to it.  I never thought to ask him how many rounds were in the can.  He passed away last fall, and I'm trying to sell some of his stuff to raise money for my mother-in-law.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

I found one that looks kinda like it.

Ok, after info from you guys and some more googling, it appears to be 7.62X39 ammo for model 56 rifle (AK or SKS).........which makes sense because the rifles my FIL had were SKS and AK that I thought used 7.62x39.

Just have to figure what it is worth now.

depends on who you find to buy it  :chuckle: to a collector maybe, to the average guy nope... if your going for a quick sale I would try to beat the price of something like ammotogo.com or sump.. if a long sell throw it up on the net and try to find a collector

That guy is on crack, gunbroker is only good if you want to see what the most is that some whackjob will try and sell his stuff for.

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=973677   700rds for $161 is a little more like it! This is in a spam can as well.

I would think that you could get $100 for one of those 550 round tins pretty handily but that is about it realistically.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.
