Oh how do I count the ways.....
Could be having some nice ( total of 7) fat crab to take home to a feast...
Could be having my bro in law out on the boat, playing crib, soaking pots....
Could be watching all the idiots at the boat launch get tickets for who knows which infractions...
Could be watching the one guy bump the other guys boat then try and drive off until he noticed said bro in law
taking his picture with his phone.....the flipping a u turn and coming back....
Could be the guy in the huge 40 plus foot yatch giving me the hands up "wtf" guesture cause I'm pulling a pot 40 feet of his bow. Hello???? There are 100 pots out here......you don't want me this close....don't park in the middle of them......
Could be hearing (and getting a video text) of Ripper out on the water watching the orcas frolic (his word, not mine)..........
Could be watching folks that forgot how to back up a trailer relearning on the fly when everyone is ready to go home and eat crab............
For me.......it is all those things.
-
Sounds like you had a good time.
-
The three limits we got here are the best eats ever! I like how everyone asks "what you fishing for?". Kings I say and the looks I get are awesome. I catch fish while soaking pots. None yet but we didnt grind it out. When I get a king I'll post pics should only be a few days to find a few. Sittin at home three minutes after docking the boat is sweet. Good luck to all crabbers and anglers!
-
All of which is why I wait until the Monday after the opener. Launch empty this morning – pots out at sunrise – home with a limit by 6:30am
-
Nice.....
-
I still maintain that the best meal I have ever eaten was freshly caught dungeoness steamed right on the beach.
-
A few to add.....
Could be watching people sit in line for 15 minutes waiting to launch, and then removing straps and putting in plugs on the ramp...
Could be watching a guy chug a beer driving a wide open skiff in front of the cops at the launch. :bdid:
Could be the 9 limits my friends and I got in under an hour :IBCOOL:.
Could be going diving, and seeing an empty pot on the bottom with 3 huge crab standing on top of it.
Could be the crab feast that followed, and the pile of legs and claws that was left after everyone had already stuffed themselves.
Whatever it is, I'll be heading back out for more the first chance I get!!
-
Could be your delerious!!
-
Why is low tide on opening day always a -tide. I tried to get back to the launch at low tide, there wasnt any water at the launch. Current was ripping with the big tide, I'm glad you guys on here recomended I put more weight in the pots.
-
Why is low tide on opening day always a -tide.
It increases the entertainment factor at the launch.
-
I launched a couple of hour early to make sure there would be enough water. luhrs beach is all mud flats on a - tide.
-
Exactly..........
Had a guy next to me with a brand spanking new boat. Gonna get him some crab! Anyway......temp regristration in the window.....first dip in the salt. He sees into my boat and asks about the paddle and throw cushion. Ever need that? I said no but you better have it or you gonna get a ticket at best. He asks surprised and says "Really.......well I told the guy at Cabelas to make sure and give me everything I need." Uh....yeah....may not want to say that to anyone doing compliace and safety check.....for sure a ticket, if not worse, waiting to happen.
-
We Need a picture or 2 here!

If you went to Point Defiance to launch, you could have watched 90% of the people turn around and leave when they found out they could not park in the park, it was all reserved for the Taste of Tacoma :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
Had to park outside the park or $20 for parking in the reserved lot :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:
But we did limit
-
My favorite is the guy who starts his motor and leaves it running for several minutes before he puts his boat in the water. Makes some great snap, crackle, and popping sounds. :yike: I've seen it happen twice.
-
...or the guy that drops his pot 10 feet from yours when there is 100 yards to the next pot :bash:
-
Or how about seeing the smiles on my wife's and kids faces ( 3 and 2 yr old boys) when you pull up a pot loaded with crab. And when we get home to enjoy these tasty little creatures, I cant hardly get a bite in without having them climb all over me for it.They love it!!
It makes memories that are priceless for years to come. And I hope to pass down the tradition of hunting, crabbing, fishing and so on like I had. Now that's why I enjoy opening day of crabbing.
Goodluck to all on your crabbing adventures!!
-
So hey.....regarding kids............
My boy is six. I'd like to take him out. Does he only need a catch card? I'd like to run four pots, two each of us. I can get an extra float with his/my name on it. Can anyone spell it out for me?

Anyone fishing for crab in Puget Sound must purchase a crab endorsement, which is free to fishers under age 15. All fishers age 15 or older also must carry an applicable Washington fishing license to fish for crab anywhere in Washington. More licensing information is available online at https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov.
That's from wdfw's site. Hope it helps.
-
Could be that I don't have a gosh darned boat :bash: :bash: :bash:
-
This thread has me pumped, headed out Thursday for the first crabbing adventure on my new boat. Good times!

Great couple days of crabbing
-
Getting excited. Picking up my sons youth license and catch card after work. The boy, his Leggo action figures, and I are hitting it in the morning.
If anyone makes it out today and cares to share I'd be interested in a crab report.
-
Good luck tomorrow.
-
Thanks buddy.......maybe we will knock 'em dead and have a little surplus on hand.......do I hear bbq sat evening?
-
Set the pots out last night, going to check them this afternoon. Looking forward to some fresh Dungys cooked on the beach. Just gotta love the first batch of the year.
Good luck to all.
-
BBQ and UFC fight.
-
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm......
Who's hosting the fights?
-
:dunno:
-
Ah......thought maybe you were.
I'll holler if we end up with a surplus.

 Wish my crab pots looked like that. Nice job
-
Mmmm mmmmm mmmm.....
Just finished dinner. A little steak, a lotta crab...some corn....life us good.
-
I thought I had a good meal going with BBQ'd pheasant. You've got one up on me though. Some fresh dungy would be sweet... Glad you and the boy got out h20. Looked like a real good day!
-
Quick recap.....turkey working better than chicken.....Skillet has a crappy depthfinder and could use a new pot......four pots fir two guys are better than three......the police find me and my boat in full compliance then some.....crab cakes to be had soon for an app is something to look forward too.....beer is good while cleaning da boat.....eight crab fir two guys really is actually a lot of crab.....and thats it.
-
Great pics guys!
-
3 limits from yesterday. Do you guys throw the whole crab in and boil it or crack them and just throw the legs in?
-
You are all making me sick that I don't have a boat and pots :bash:
I hate all of you :chuckle:
-
I have always preferred to just cook the legs, would you want to eat a deep fried turkey that had not been gutted :chuckle:
-
I bust them in half, shake them and pull the gook out
-
Looks like you had a good time with the boy.
-
I am 100% done in. Crab, steak, cirn, beers, time in the pool....cant handle much more.
-
I’ve been having to toss back at least half of the legal sized crabs because they are soft. Anyone else having that issue?
-
3 limits from yesterday. Do you guys throw the whole crab in and boil it or crack them and just throw the legs in?
Crack 'em first. When there are higher levels of contaminants and pollution in the water, it concentrates in the "butter" of the crab first. Get rid of that isht!
I’ve been having to toss back at least half of the legal sized crabs because they are soft. Anyone else having that issue?
Yup, lots of soft shell right now. Tons of females right now too from Everett to Edmonds, apparently there's a big mass of them moving through. Should be moved on by Tues-Wed though.
-
I'm eating a dungy crab salad sandwich as I type. Had Chili Crab Friday after we got home. That is some seriously good eats right there.
-
A few soft....yep. I crack 'em as well. Shuck 'em at the launch keeping the tops in case I get checked. Less mess at home and I think they cook up better that way. Also, more legs in the pot means quicker we can eat 'em.
-
Do you guys throw the whole crab in and boil it or crack them and just throw the legs in?
I cut them like this then pull the shell off and flick out the guts.
-
Huh....the ol' cleaver method. I prefer to ice em.....get em good and cold. Then, I grasp the bundle of legs and claw with the left hand, grab same corner of shell with right hand and pull top shell off in one motion. Then, grasp both sides putting thumbs on the shell plate used for gender ID....break in half flicking guts out. Clean off the gills, remaing gunk, toss back on ice until cooking.
Lots of good ways including what CP showed. I simply like to do as much in the field as possible to keep the mess down at home.
-
I like the rock crab
anyone else prefer them or am I just weird, bit tougher to deal with ya but taste awesome
-
Taste good
Effort bad
-
We crabbed all weekend out at my place near in Tahuya the total for the weekend was 38 keepers it was slower than last year, but still a great time. We used mainly chicken, and pig fat off the hogs we slaughtered last year. You could not ask for a more beautiful weekend to be out on the water.
-

Nope. not weird. I 100% agree

Is there a public dock out that way where I could throw a dock pot?
-
Flip them on their back and punch them in the belly at the end of their abdomen. You will see a little water come out and they will go limp as a rag. Grab all the left legs with the left hand and the right legs with the right and slam the crab against something solid between the eyes and it will pop the shell loose. Pretty sure I've tried most ways, but always willing to learn some new ones. Seriously, punch them in the belly, kills them instantly. I tought my 10 year old how to do this (she hits them with the back side of a hatchet) and she will clean a dozen crab ready for the water in no time just to impress our guests. I supervise with a black butte and get the boil ready.

I don't know of one personally DoubleJ there are allot more marinas, and big docks on the Hoodsport side which is close to you anyways that look like you could. We have a private launch off of the northshore close to the Tahuya river, and we do most of our crabbing off of the boat. I know if you watch the minus tides out there you can pick them up in the eel grass I actually got two out there on Saturdays low tide while out clamming.
-
I'll check out hoodsport, thanks

What salt to water ratio do you guys use for guts in cookin?
1st Trip this year tommorow morning. Got walleye carks in the bait boxes and one has a bloody catfish cark from Moses going 70 feet deep out of Shilshole.
Never tried Moses carks for crab.
-
I personally pull my crabs out of the salt they go right into a pot of boiling fresh water they taste great. I have taken the guts out before cooking, but I think it takes away some of the flavor. I would go grab a couple whole chickens they are on sale at safeway for 88 cents a pound at the moment, chicken for us has by far been the best bait. We do mix in fish occasionally, and I have been using some hog fat for scent just make sure your stuff is fresh I notice a big difference if my bait goes bad.

I use a heavy hand with the salt. Be generous, the water should taste like seawater once the salt dissolves.
My :twocents:
-
I too salt the water. Also....on the bait topic I picked up a few whole makeral and chopped 'em up. Seemed to be very oily and may have helped. Also...agreed on the chicken.
-
Winco has 10 lb frozen packs of thigh and leg quarters for 78 cents a pound. That's their regular price too.
-
Walleye and Catfish carks work. Even threw in half dozen Koke Heads. Koke heads? That buddy is gone.................. Got 4 nice dungies with 2 traps. Socked in with fog - couldn't go but 150 yards off shore. Trolled Shilshole bay for 20 minutes and found downrigger must have blown a fuse (hopefully). Yep that bay is closed, but what are you going to do for 3 hours socked in with fog watching the shore constantly. FISH
-
Found something on the net. 1/2 cup salt to 1 gallon h2o. We scarfed them up. Cooked them bout 17 minutes.
-
I use 1/4 to 1/2 cup salt per gallon of water, boil for 20 mins.
-
I only boil for 10 minutes. Rolling boil, drop 'em in, eat in 10.
-
Can anyone give me an area 9 crab report? Also.....any silvers still being caught. I'd like to go out this weekend and go for both but haven't crabbed much further out than Mukilteo.
Thanks.
-
I only crab in 9 and it has been very good. Same as last year. Where abouts were you thinking about dropping the pots?
-
Open to suggestions......maybe either side of PNP......ive trolled there and caught silvers....
-
Just go find some other pots and set on top of them. :chuckle:
-
Just go find some other pots and set on top of them. :chuckle:
Why set on top of them? Just find some other pots and pull them. :chuckle:
-
I always cook crab in seawater. Fill the live well and just drain it into the cook pot. I find fish to be the best bait for me.
-
Just go find some other pots and set on top of them. :chuckle:

i like your thinking. In my experiences i have learned its always better to pull the commercial pots.
-
What a nice boat ride this evening. Like being on a big pond. I ran two pots, just me. Pulled 5 pots total to get my limit. All nice solid keepers with not a soft one in the bunch. I'll be back out in the morning to say hello to Skillet. Here are a few pics from the phone....
-
Running...
-
Time for a beer
-
And my limit...........
-
Nice looking boat H2O!
-
Just finished a batch of crab cakes from those. Gonna fry up a test one here in a few minutes. Went out again this morning. The two pots that soaked over night gave up six keepers. It was me and the bro in law so all six went right into the cooler. We rebaited and set back in the same area. A little bit nasty out there but with 6 down we figured we could limit without to much trouble. Didn't take long for Skillet to show up and man are his pots on fire. He pulled a near limit on his first check. We put one more in the box to make it seven. We chatted a bit and he was doing the sorting and upgrading. I pulled two pots and had two more bringing me to nine.....and what do you know.....Skillet has a freebie from the pot he is sorting. We pulled up, extended the ol net and that makes a limit. Spent the next little bit pulling and clearning my last pots and back to the dock. Forget all the bad stuff I said about him.....that Skillet is a decent fella.
-
Went out this weekend and was a bit disapointed :'(
Yesterday, we took 4 dungees and 5 rock crab.
This morning we got 6 dungees and 1 rock crab on an over night soak..... and it was with 6 pots :bash:
(3 guys, 2 pots apiece)
Bought 2 new crab bait cannisters from the boat house yesterday, filled them with bear meat scraps and the rock crabs had such big claws, they ripped open the metal :yike: Never see that before, and they were some big rock crabs
-
Those rocks have some crazy strong claws. I watched one clamp onto the pier railing (he was being measured) and he clamped so hard it looked like someone took a pair of pliers to the wood :yike: Those guys are tough!
-
We had decent weekend we dropped saturday afternoon, and pulled 4 after about a 3 hour soak. We rebaited, and left them overnight we went out this morning we got 5 legals out of the first pot them 5 more between the other three. Overall much slower than last year, but we are getting some giants. We talked to a neigbor who pulled a nine incher out last sunday I can honestly say that I have never seen one that big, but I guess they are out there.
-
Crab cakes anyone?
-
That cake on the upper left looks like a crab that came out of one of my pots...
Great crabbing this weekend. Which is good, because I've paid my idiot tax in advance by losing two pots already this year. One of my remaining pots got tangled up with an old derelict that I think I can rehab, so I'm only down one pot and two bouys. The derelict did not have the rot cord in it - it was wired shut. Well, that's just not cool. Pots like those just keep catching and killing crab for a loooong time. If you think I found your old pot and are willing to take a lecture off of me about rot cord, feel free to contact me. Aside from the wired up escape hatch, there is a pretty distinctive feature about it. Tell me what that is and where I found it and I'll give it back - with rot cord installed.
Threw the pots out on Friday night in two new-to-me areas out of Everett after having some pretty bad fishing last weekend. Picked up on Saturday morning. Not too shabby. First couple of 7+'ers of the year.

Good seeing you out there again H20. I propose we have a "Crabbage tournament" soon - pots dropped at the same time, then we raft up the boats and play some cribbage games, and then pick the pots. We'll figure out a way to combine cribbage scores with what comes up on the soak...
-
Nice job gentleman.
-
I'm up for some crabbage.....however, with your luck lately may not be much of a challenge. Nice looking feast you have going on there.
-
Have you guys crabbed Port Gamble? In the past it has produced some really good sized crab. If you are fishing mid channel, the crab spot is pretty obvious.
-
Let's set up that crabbage deal. I think I know which deckhand I'll have on board for that...
-
Great crabbing this weekend. Which is good, because I've paid my idiot tax in advance by losing two pots already this year.
We here at Fishstiq's Underwater Stuff Finder Service specialize in finding stuff underwater. We have successfully recovered crab/shrimp pots, fishing gear, anchors, stringers, ladders, road cones, plastic chains, ropes, sunglasses, a full unopened beer, the chalice of the Commodore of the Lake Washington Yacht Club, flashlights, and various other implements of destruction.
Lemme know if you want to get those pots back, my rates are pretty reasonable :brew: !

Opening day in area 7, the twin bridges launch was crazy, No parking. Had to wait in line to get out.

I Saw this yesterday.
This guy was standing on the dock holding the rope to his boat with the motor out of the water running. What are you supposed to say? Hey your motor is running? Well he has to know that he is standing right next to it. :bash:
So I took a picture.
Yeah the 115 is running :yike:

Hopefully one day I'll catch crabs.

Someday D.....someday.
Just this weekend I had another great launch experience. I was heading in Saturday evening. Everett boat launch..........not many people using the launch or removal lanes. I'm coming in with two other boats......I stop mid channel to get my bumbers and ropes ready since I'm solo....other boat goes ahead..........I fall in line 2nd. I pull in and head to dock with nobody on it............first guy takes same lane opposite of me on the other dock..........3rd guy pulls in behind me. Now.........by myself I can put in and take out faster than most that have an extra hand. Apparently the guy behind me wasn't taking any chances on that. I back my rig down.......walk back to bring my boat up and guide it on the trailer. Whacko behind me drops his trailer in the MIDDLE of the ramp, crowding me and totally blocking the guy that was opposite of me! What the hell? I get mine on the trailer and just look up shaking my head. Don't know why he couldn't wait 5 minutes or why he felt the need to block the other guys boat. Not sure if they were just drunk or stupid. Needless to say I got mine trailered and out of the water before he blocked me in or worse!
I have attached a quick graphical representation as well.
-
Nice art work.
-
Damn that guy is an idiot........ so boat dock is the place to be if one wants to be entertained
-
Well let me ask this question any of you guys ever heard of putting an empty beer can in your pots? Or aluminum cans but beer is better.
-
Damn that guy is an idiot........ so boat dock is the place to be if one wants to be entertained
Definitely...especially when it has been hot out and dudes have been drinking. Better than TV!
-
Boat launch is an excellent spot for people watching. Nope...never put beer in my pot. I was going to leave Skillet a few cold ones but didn't find his pot to pillage before I had my limit on board. Maybe next time.
-
Fixed it for you H2o
-
Hopefully one day I'll catch crabs.
We all gotta have dreams. Pretty sure you can find them around the marina in Everett, which just happens to be right next to the Naval Base. Especially when the Nimitz gets back from a long Pacific tour. Crabbin' seems to be pretty good then. Probably about an even chance at the next Nickelback concert that rolls through, though.
-
Oh....I LOVE Nickleback!
Whos with me!
Thanks for the clarification Buckmark....
-
Thanks for the info skillet.
-
Damn that guy is an idiot........ so boat dock is the place to be if one wants to be entertained
That has always been the spot to catch free entertainment
-
It took me a minute to see What Buckmark did but now that i found it i think it was called for.
-
Damn that guy is an idiot........ so boat dock is the place to be if one wants to be entertained
The Mukilteo launch is about 8000% more fun to watch.
Nice boat pinky!

I have no words. H20... :-\

I could really blast the nickleback with a boat like that!

Hopefully one day I'll catch crabs.
If so, apply Raid bug spray.
The West is cool (and wet). Lots of new $hit over here when you haven't experienced it.
-
Hey, I thought the >:( face was just for the Bigfoot thread??? :dunno:
well it was until the whole Nickelback innuendo's started then it got all serious up in here >:(
:chuckle: :chuckle:
:chuckle: My bad, Run - should I edit my post to suggest the best crabbing would be had at a Lady GaGa show? Pretty sure everybody in the first 4 rows gets a limit at one of those...
-
Poor h20hunter everyone always picking on his pink stuff and choice of music.
-
Good thing my self image is so strong right!
Looking forward to the weekend already. Wife wants to get out on the boat. I'm thinking a mid afternoon start....soak a few pots.........run back into Everett for dinner on the water......back out to pull some pots and watch the sun go down. My kind of date night!
-
Better late than never, this is the wife and I's sunday catch, took about an hour. Not two full limits, but enough for dinner!
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1117.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fk596%2Fphishstiq%2F2012-07-15_13-52-57_806.jpg&hash=3249d9d3e9dbab1811dd8393f34d7317e8b13a1f)
-
Some nice ones.............how was the Mukilteo launch? Sunday was a bit windy and nasty to be out on that point.
-
We dove from shore, left the boat at home. Vis was horrible, the sunshine has made an algae bloom and you can only see about 3 feet.

all its missing is bacon otherwise that is damn near perfect :)
-
I'm sure I can find some bacon wrapped something during dinner. If not....I'll just have make something!

Anyone heading out for crab this Sat evening? Looks like I'll be floating around Hat soaking a few pots.
-
Dropping pots on Friday night and picking up EARLY Sat before work to do a crab boil for the crew. May head back out Saturday evening if I have time and can get one more person with a crab card and a couple bucks for fuel...
You bringing the wifey?
-
Probably not...........date night kind of fell through. I'm thinking the brother in law and I with maybe my boy. Let him drift around for flounder while the pots soak. I hear a nice little flat fish chopped up adds a little spice to bait.
-
If anyone is out today in area 8-2 how about a report. I'm planning on crabbing tomorrow and will be focusing on around Hat. it has been pretty good to me and even better to Skillet. Speaking of which....Skillet, how about a report on here or via text tomorrow am when you pull your pots. My plan is to head out late morning, soak some gear, pull a few pots, the pick up my son and bro in law at the dock and add two pots to the mix. Keep on crabbing, throw in a longer soak to run in for fish and chips...finish the day out with three limits. I'm planning on hitting the same area.
-
Good luck tomorrow. I ate me some crab last night that i got from luvmystang Wednesday after we went and blasted off the muzzleloader.
-
Thanks....gonna have to get you and the girl out one of these times. She and Mark can talk about whatever kids their age talk about. Legos....barbie....whatever.
-
I'll see what I can do as far as a report from the water.
Turkey legs with some fish parts have been what's working for me.
-
Same here. We add herring, cat food, try and keep a variety of scent. Also been really cutting into the meat and removing most of the skin from the turkey/chicken.
-
The little one would love it im sure
-
Yep. A nice calm morning. Soak the pots, drop a hook over the side for some flatfish, just goof off a bit. We may need to take a day off bear hunting in Aug to make it happen.
-
Sounds good to me.
-
Apparently we're not the only guys looking for turkey legs this time of year... couldn't find them last night, so I went with chicken legs instead. Crab don't seem to know the difference. Had 6 keepers in the first pot this morning and had both limits plus covered on the second pot.
Take from the first pot-
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg835.imageshack.us%2Fimg835%2F2148%2F6keepersfirstpot.jpg&hash=d82e08653d0d0a78abc721c34849d21ebd377ea2)
Nothing huge today, a few pushing 7" but nothing over.
-
Still doing well also. Same are I've been working. Easy limit yesterday early then picked up my son and brother in law. Put a couple more on the boat then noticed my boy getting a little tired and pale. Wind had kicked up and made for a little rougher weather. Baited the pots heavy and headed into visit the scuttlebutt for some fish and chips. Came back out and pulled the pots. Man does it get tough pulling pots in the wind with a load of crab. We limited out for us both in the first pot. After that is was discard a few of the smaller six and a halfs, double check the count, and head in.
I agree that chicken works just fine. However, I really like a big turkey leg for being able to hang it in the middle of the pot. What really set it on fire for me yesterday was flounder. I would run up into about 20 feet of water and drag a steelhead jig tipped with a bit of nightcrawler. Caught about 9 or 10 flatfish. Basically I sliced em and hung them in the pot Deadliest Catch style. The crab loved 'em. Ate them up and left only the head. So, if you can, catch a few and try it out.
-
The flounder off of our dock gave us our best haul too. Mixed with other things that were already in the bait box. Didn't have any keepers until the flounder went in though
-
A little preview of what I'll be having tonight...
Old Bay Jalepeno Crab Cake
Panko Bread Crumb
Mayo
Egg
Pepper
Sweet Onion
Celery
Green Onion
A bit of flour
Jalepeno
Old Bay Seasoning
Parmesean Cheese
Plenty of Dungy meat....

We dropped the pots off late last night and picked them up this afternoon
coming in after sunset satuday:

quick they are making a break for it... :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
okay......quick side discussion regarding pot pulling.
We been pulling a lot of pots. I'm getting sore doing it and when the wind and waves are up and the tide is running a very full pot is quite the mass to be moving through the water. Does any know of a somewhat inexpensive pot pulled that is manual, mounts to the rail, or to my Scotty downrigger mounts. Really....I think the easiest way to pull pots is bring a newbie and tell 'em that if they want to have a beer they have to pull pots. I can just sit back and watch the sort happen. Any suggestions?
-
Could you rig up a boat trailer wench? Use some lumbar making something you can stand on, with the wench mounted up and over the side of the boat kind of like a gallows? You stand on the bottom, and the upper 3/4s would be pulled against the side of the boat? IDK, just thinking out loud.

I will do it, just let me put out my pots. I have pots and no boat at the moment.
-
Hmmmm......a pot puller with his own pots.....wonder if I could get three guys and six pots in my little North River.....
-
I also have the pulley that fits in this mount, not sure if that is what you are looking for.
-
I bought a Scotty Trap-Ease and it does make pulling them a little easier.

Yes that is what I have.

Looks a little flimsy.............however........pretty inexpensive. A little help would make a day of it a bit easier. I may have to look into that.

Yep...low cost...even if it only helps by reducing the load by 25% it would be worth it.
-
Also as a bonus it may scrape off all the jellyfish crap off of your lines. I don't know how bad it is in other areas, but the Hood Canal is infested with those *censored*s. I think Double J can attest to how many we get from last weekend.
-
So far not to bad. Pulled a pot on sat....no gloves....hmmmm...littke stringy things making the ol hands burn.

And the size of my youngest son too. Nasty
-
Okay.....before I throw my idea out there I just want you guys to know that part of my enjoyment is just doing weird stuff to see if it works. I like tinkering with baits, depths, just stuff you know. So...........
I picked up three monster turkey legs at the store. They are 2 pounds plus each. One of the last times I was in the bait shop I saw some liquid gel like gunk that was like smelly jelly for crab. I'm thinking of getting me one of those fatty turkey injectors and injecting my turkey legs with this gunk. My theory is that if I inject it, the let it sit for a few days and lighty slice it up prior to soaking it will A) add some extra scent right away B) add some extra scent as the little buggers eat into it and C) act a bit as a cover scent in general.
I know.....I know.........chicken/turkey.....whatever works fine and this is not needed. I just find it fun to mess with.
Do you think it would help or even work?
-
If you have been limiting the way things are, I would say buying crab smelly jelly would be a waste of time and $$$. Still, might be fun to try and see if there is a difference.
I've been thinking about trying adding 2-3 lines together and crabbing in really deep water to see if the size of catch changes. Might be a waste of time, but like you said, it's fun to try new stuff.
-
I went to 150' on all my pots a couple years ago and it definitely improved the catch. Maybe for the only reason that not many others had theirs that deep?
-
Talking with my buddy here at work he has a few old cow syringes at home. I'm gonna "juice" a fatty leg and drop two pots....one on each side of the boat at the same time. One containg a juiced leg...the other containg a stardard leg, 6 feet apart or so, see which has more crab and see which may have the bigger crab.
Like you said..........probably not needed just fun to goof with.
-
Thursday and Friday will be warm enough at a high tide that I think I'll swim my dock pot out about 200' from the dock and then swim back and see how I do then. I can only throw the thing about 25' out so maybe I'll have better results by swimming it deeper. Damnit I need a dinghy.
-
Be carefull and wear a jacket. Tides get "swirly" and that water is cold. Silly crab aren't worth the risk. May I suggest starting out a little closer and working your way out.
-
You're a brave man or a dumb man i haven't decided witch one yet.
-
There are bold crappers and there are old crabbers but there are no old, bold crabbers.

:chuckle: :yeah:

You guys could be talking about both of us!

There are bold crappers.

Maybe that should be my new signature!

There you go H20. You need to add that to your signature block...

It's a bay off of a channel. Current isn't that strong. Swam in that water many times.
-
Well, good luck and be safe all the same. However, without pics I don't think I'm going to be able to believe it. So, please have somebody on shore snapping some action photos!

This guy is pretty flexible on price, and will consider pretty much anything in trade! :hello:
-
hah! just posted on that thread with his handle on there.
-
Ok....got me a jug of Pautzes (sp?).........the same folks that make the little salmon eggs and egg brines.........
CRAB FIRE!
Gonna marinate some chicken in it, juice a drummy, and see what happens.
-
Sorry....its called........
Crab and Shrim FUEL

Crabs feel like fire.

Looking forward to it.
Now....regarding the Pautzes FUEL.........
Got home from the gym and layed out about 100 paper towels and prepared my turkey legs, FUEL, and injector. Worked pretty well. I just stuck it about 100 times with a little shot each time. It would leak out a bit but if I was able to find a natural vein in the leg it would take a pretty good volume before leaking out. I did this for two legs and have them bagged up and soaking. The third turkey leg I simply sliced like I normall would prior to placing in the pot. Dropped it in a bag, dumped in some juice, and will let that one marinate as well. I think the slice and soak will get a better "brine" then the injected ones. We'll see. Finally.......I grabbed the bag of chicken that has been frozen, thawed, in the sun, repeat...at least twice. It is also now marinating. Now just have to wait until Saturday to drop the pots and see if it helps at all.
Anyone other than Skillet (already talked to him) going out Saturday and going to be in the greater 8-2 area?
-
I'm heading out today, I have 2 empty seats in the boat. If anyone is interested let me know! I will probably be at the Everett launch at around 230-300.
-
It's going to have to get a hell of a lot warmer and sunnier by noon before I go jumping into the bay
-
C'mon............all that talk..............SISSY!!!
(be carefull)
-
:chuckle:
-
At the dock now. Pics later. Short story, my wife used her birthday gift card for walmart from my parents to buy me a crab pot and a small inflatable raft. Worked pretty good to get the pot out 150' and get me back to the dock
-
Nice.......look forward to the recap.
-
Here's the boat

And while the pot was soaking, a little fun with the kids

High tide was at 12:45 and we didn't even get to the dock until 1:45. Pot didn't get dropped until after 2pm so we were chasing the tail end of high tide and didn't get any keepers. Tomorrow though, I can hit it a few hours ahead of high tide and pull it a few hours after and see what's in there. Looks promising. The boat worked better than I thought it would and was way easy to swim the pot out to the end of the rope and swim back to the dock. A little current push but not enough to throw me off coarse.
-
Cool. Acutually looks like a good time. How doe the retrieval work? Just pull like a madman or swim out and pull 'er straight up?
-
pull like a mad man from the dock. Once I get it moving off of the bottom, it's not too bad coming up. I'd drop it with a buoy and pull straight up but I don't want a crab to pop the boat while I'm in it and I doubt I'd be able to fill out a card in those cramped confines.
-
I should get my YAR name changed from nutcracker since I can't have my nut punch avatar to "YAR Hardcore Crabber" I work way too hard for these crabs
-
So I went crabbing yesterday... all by myself... alone... with 2 empty seats... :'(
I did well, limited out. While I was out, there were a couple guys who had been out since 9-10am and had caught 2 crab in 5 hours. I felt bad for them, so while I was picking up my crab I stuffed a few nice ones in their pot. They seemed pretty happy when they pulled it up!
My catch....

The bad news is that while pulling the boat out, I slipped on the launch, and like an idiot I tried to catch myself on the side of the truck. Twisted my back something fierce, I am in p-a-i-n today! I'm walking around like I'm wearing ski boots and have a load in my pants, it's horrible. No more crabbing for me until my back gets beter, I hope it's just sore and not actually damaged somehow.
-
Nice catch.....one of these days I'm gonna find Skillets pots and pilfer them. I'll be nice about it and leave a few beers in there for him.

I also hope you're better soon. It's always stupid crap like that the does all the damage. My wifes 3 herniated disks in her back were done while she was doing a movement she had done a thousand times. Just happened that this one time, her back didn't want to do it. Eat crab and swallow pain killers and get well soon.
-
Today's tide yielded 3 red rocks. Got the pot out 150' from the dock at about 1pm and let the tide get high at 2pm and pulled them in about 3pm. Still no problems driving the boat with just my hands. I think I'm going to try and add 100' of rope to the 150' I already have. Anyone know where I can get an underwater topo map for Pickering Passage? I thought Google maps would have it but it doesn't. I want to see if another 100' will get me much deeper or if it wouldn't be worth it.
-
How deep are you now? Here is what I'm thinking................cheap wetsuit you find at a garage sale....weight belt..........pair of fins and a hand me down mask.......swim for them!
-

I don't know how deep I'm at right now. No way for me to tell. No fish finder. I can't imagine more than 30'
-
Another option is just wading for them. Low tide and find some eel grass and your in an area that should hold crab. There's a few beaches here in the north sound where I've had good luck wading for nice size crab. You'd be surprised how fast a crab can run...
-
yep....little buggers can hustle. Shoot....30 feet would be nice with a wetsuit and weight belt.
-
I can't scuba. underwater phobia or something. Never have been able to do it. I remember scooting around the low tides in my dad's dinghy with a net on a 15' pole chasing crabs
-
Well then I said stick with the inflatable and keep at it.

PM me your email address and I can send you all the underwater topo maps you'll ever need! Also, if you decide H2O's idea is a good one, I can get you a mask, fins, snorkel, wet boots and wet gloves, probably for free (on the condition that you give your word to not freedive for crab alone).

oops, just saw this. Well, still, if you want fins to help push that inflatable around, I'm sure I can get you a good set, no charge.
.....and let me know if you want those topo maps!

So I went crabbing yesterday... all by myself... alone... with 2 empty seats... :'(
I wanted to go, but was doing yard work and didn't check the page until it was too late.
-
yea, I just don't know what it is. I can swim under water and feel fine. I can't scuba or use a snorkel. When I try to breath with my mouth underwater, I panic and freak out. I was told I am breathing in too much air and to breath slower but then I think too much about what I'm doing there to do anything else. Just decided I wouldn't do it.
-
Hope I can get the boat done before the season end. Checking for leaks in the picture.
-
Back on the dock. Pot just went in for a 4 hour soak. Kids are catching bullheads and flounder off the dock. All i need is a beer but i forgot to bring those
-
15 today. The pink juice stuff hepls. So do about 5 flounder per pot. Gonna soak em overnight and pull rhe in the morning. Something tells me one ofthe pots has six keepers already in it.
-
Overnight soak baited heavy with flounder paid off. Three pots, 8 keepers plus the 6 I may have left in a pot overnight makes 14.....home, boat clean and put away by 10. Launched at 7 so not bad.
-
Mine went back in at 12:30 and I'll pull it again at 6pm. Then I'll re-bait and put it back out for a 24hr soak
-
Just 3 tonight but it was on bait that had been used 3 times before. It was almost gray lol
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv612%2Fdoublej88%2FIMAG0338.jpg&hash=09275e88ec68984035fcfa1c7d6135fa2af4c0ec)
Pot got dropped back at 6pm for a 24 hour soak with fresh turkey neck cut up nice to let lots of scent out. I say 7 keepers tomorrow night. my sons say 5, 8, and 10. My wife, the negative nancy says 4
-
If one of those red rocks gets hold of your dog(s) you are gonna be awfully sad when you see the vet bill! I can just about guarantee that stitches will be required!
-

No doubt. Wife was in tears when a little one got her. She only got a blood blister luckily. Turns out when a 5' nothing woman panics, crabs are as fragile as a dried twig.
-
So..........a little more feedback on my weekend of crabbing.
The Pautzes (still don't know the spelling) Shrim and Crab FUEL helped. The meat that was soaked was hit harder than the other pots. The turkey legs as well as the cut up chicken. Whe dropping the pot you could see a distint oil slick coming from the bait. I can only imagine that on the bottom it created a plume of scent that helped me get some crab. Heavy pots indeed.
Now....what really shined for me was the flounder. I will wait and hear from Skillet to see how his pots did. I baited mine two ways with flounder. I hung 'em Deadliest Catch style from the top of the cage with a few slices in the meat and I cut 'em up and put them in bait box/bag. The free hanging brought in more and bigger males. Not more crab per se....just bigger males. The hanging flounder were completely gone the next day. Not even the heads were left. The bait bags....not so much. I think the debris and smell from the crab eating the hanging ones bring in a higher level of crab. The overnight soak of three pots yielded eight keepers in the flounder pots. All over 6 1/2 inches and at least half almost hitting the magic 7 inch mark. Big healty hard shell crabs.
Ok....moving on. Fresh bait. I'm seeing that my 2nd and 3rd don't bring the crab in like that first soak. The quality of the crab goes down as well. I think the females are less picky. My best take for males and quality is that first good soak. I think adding that fresh turkey leg or extra chicken on your 2nd soak can bring good results.
Ok....moving on again. So..........DoubleJ.......I agree with FC.....better watch that puppy or she will be hurting. However, I am impressed with your stick to it attitude when going after these little buggers. I know Shelton is a bit of a drive but what do you have planned for Saturday. What is it to Everett.....2 hours? If you don't have plans and are willing to make the drive I'd like to take you out. I can run out, soak a few pots, meet you at the dock. I'll take care of gas, pots (I have plenty), and bait. All you need to do is make the drive. I have plenty of meat put away and would be happy if take the complete haul home with you. No strings attached day on the water. All you gotta do is make the drive.
So? Got plans?
-
Quick qestion, how do you save your crab if you dont plan on eating them right away? Do you just cook them up and the freezer them?
-
I don't save them. I cook 'em up. Eat on them. Then shuck and freeze the meat while it is fresh.
-
I can’t bring myself buy anything for crab bait. I just use salmon parts of that I’d throw away anyway. And it’s a good way to get rid of that stuff instead of stinking up my trash cans. The head gets wired to the bottom and the guts, milt, roe sacks, odds & ends go in a bait basket and gets wired to the top.
The crabs empty the bait basket pretty quickly but that puts a good chum trail in the water they can chew on the head for hours.
-
H20's "flounder bomb" worked pretty well for us. We soaked 3 pots for 3.5 hours, all in about the same depth, all in the same general area. Two pots had flounder in the bait boxes, one didn't (just chicken legs). The score-
Pot one (flounder and chicken) - 1 big keeper male, several under males and a bunch of females. Probably 15 crab in that pot.
Pot two (flounder and chicken) - 3 keeper males, three undersize males. No females.
Pot three (chicken only) - Only four crab, all females.
Rebaited two of the pots with chicken and flounder and let them soak overnight. Next morning we picked up 4 keepers between the two pots. A lot of females. I picked up and moved to a different area and rebaited with flounder only in two pots, combo flounder and chicken in another. Two hour soak (we were on a time limit), and the results were impressive-
Two pots with flounder only netted us 2 keeper crab each. Lots of undersize and females. Not bad on a two hour soak. One of the combo pots must have landed right in the middle of a mass of crab - on a two hour soak, it had 21 crab in it! Two keeper males and the rest females, though. Most crab I've ever caught in a pot to date.
Anyhow, I'm all about using the flounder as a bait component now. Adds another level of fun to the project as well.
-
Cool....nice seeing you and your better looking boat bi............mate. Yes....flounder bomb rocks.
-
Always cool getting free bait. We really have to get a "crabbage" game going out there sometime soon... raft up the boats and sit at anchor while the pots soak. Boat bi....... mate keeps our cocktails fresh, etc. Good times.
-
Thanks for the offer h2o but Everett is a hell of a haul. Not sure I could justify the gas on the budget we have for the next month. I will try the flounder next weekend. My kids are catching them non-stop off of the crabbing dock. little 3-4" fish but, cut up and in the bait box their size shouldn't matter.
-
Hmmmm.....wonder if there is a meeting point that I could simply pick you up from.........Point No Point?
If anyone has any suggestions maybe something like that could work? Shorter drive and me covering some distance on the water is pretty easy as long as the water isn't bad. I think the Point no Point run is only about 30 min.
-

Agreed, DoubleJ is a beast! Let me know if you guys do go, I'll bring my boat too, plus I have 2 pots that you (DoubleJ) can have. I doubt I'll be much help pulling pots, my back is still not too good, but I'm pretty good at bs'ing and I make delicious sandwiches!

SemperFidalis made the same offer a couple of weeks ago and we went to his place since it was only 30 miles. Point No Point is still 70 miles one way. I am greatly appreciative of the offer but I think for now I'll stick around here and catch red rocks. Maybe, one day if I'm in the neighborhood on a crabbing day I'll hit you up. My wife still has multiple brain appointments in Seattle coming up so, maybe some time in the future.
-
Yep, that is a haul. Sometime then.
-
Quick qestion, how do you save your crab if you dont plan on eating them right away? Do you just cook them up and the freezer them?
You can freeze the meat but if you mean short term I keep them in the bucket with a little ice on top to keep the temps down. I have a cheap plug in aquarium aerator with a weighted air stone. Those guys last a while like that.
-
If you're going to freeze the meat, use this method:
http://wellpreserved.ca/2009/08/22/how-to-preserve-crab-meat/ (http://wellpreserved.ca/2009/08/22/how-to-preserve-crab-meat/)
Make sure to salt the water you're freezing in or you're going to end up with flavorless hunks of meat when you thaw them out. This is something I remember vividly from my youth.
-
If you want to vacuum seal them in the shell without having the shells poke holes in the vacuum seal bags, you can put a paper plate on each side of the crab inside the bag. It smashes down the plate but protects the bag from the sharp shell points and spikes. It works pretty good!
-
I freeze the meat in salt water or milk in containers, pop them out after frozen and then vacuum seal them. Works very well.
-
NEVER freeze a crab whole. Not trying to insult anyone's intelligence but it never occurred to me that it would take so long for the crab to freeze. Only freeze what you want to keep. Apparently the shell can insulate and make it take days before the crab meat gets frozen. Legs are fine, just not the whole thing. This is speaking of raw meat, not cooked. I kind of have a rule about seafood being frozen. If it's in there more than a week it turns into bait. (Not talking fish here.) I know it's plenty safe to freeze for longer but how else am I going to get the wife to let me turn perfectly good squid and crab into bait? :dunno:
-
Sorry, right, I meant vacuum sealing and freezing cooked legs, not whole or uncooked crab. Should have been more specific.
-
h2o, what is this flounder bomb you speak of? Is this a product or is it just a *censored* load of flounder in the pot?
-
Flounder bomb............5 or 6 flounder zip tied together and hung from the top of the pot. Put a few slices in each.
Coined by Skillet on 07-30-12.
-
Oh....and to "flounder bomb" somebody is to have them motor up to you and you heave a bag of 'em on the deck of your buddies boat while his smoking hot boat bi.....mate says thanks!
-
I can get flounder but they're smaller. Would still probably work. What about bullheads? there's a ton of those off of the dock too.
-
Yep....bullheads as well. Size isn't to important....the scent is. Obviously the bigger the flounder the better.
-
:( I don't have a boat bi......mate
-
Do they need to be fresh or can I freeze the ones I catch today until Thursday?
-
I would catch em', freeze em', then load 'em up on thursday.
-
Done and done. looks like a flound-head bomb for the crabs next weekend.
-
now, if smell matters, would rotten fish work better?
-
I don't think so. I think the fresh (or frozen fresh) fish works the best. Like FC mentioned.....salmon heads from previous trips work great. Think how well we take care of our salmon after the catch. The head would be just as fresh if frozen after it was fileted.
-
Gotcha
-
Gotcha
With crab you want the bait fresh enough that you would eat it. With shrimp, if you involuntarily barf on your shrimp pot before you can get it over the side you got pretty good bait.
-
24hr soak tied off to a dock is no good. Pot got raided. 0 crabs in the pot and the bait was destroyed. I know there were crabs in there eating. No crabs tonight. Sucks.
Going to spend the next 2 days figuring out the logistics of a buoy while still being able to pull the pot from the dock. Either that or back to the 4hr soaks while the kids drive me crazy on the dock.
-

Good advice  I've never caught enough for leftovers, but if I do, that sounds like a great way to save it.

You're brave to let the pot get out of sight. I've seen people that got upset when their legally placed pot tied off to a dock disappeared. Can't trust people these days man!
-
Well.....plans are made to head back out on Saturday. My neighbor has been itching to get out and actually has a buddy coming in from the sandbox. They have a welcome home party for him Sat afternoon. We are going to hit it and any of our catch is being donated to the welcome home BBQ. Perfect. I get to catch more crab and get a weekend off from dealing with them. I've got a good supply frozen and some extra crab cakes made and put away. Time to start spreading it out. Each of the guys I work with all ate crab last night so at least they are happy. And the neigbors. And the other neighbors.
-
Need some company? The wife will be out of town, so It'll just be me and the boat and the dogs. I also have 2 empty seats on the boat if anyone else wants to go.
-
Bring your boat out........we'll make a flotilla!!!
-
Fruck you guys.
I finally get to go fishin and crabbing thursday. See ya at Shilshole at day light.
out
-
Crabbing off the Shilshole Pier was good tonight. I got 2 red rocks and one dungeness. First time there to crab and I had a good experience....can't beat the view that is for sure. Where were the flounder though is my question. I only saw two get caught and I got zippo.
Lots of sweet fishing boats coming into the launch at sundown. I like the Smokercrafts and Alumawelds the best... then put a nice Yamaha on there and I would be styling! :IBCOOL:
Maybe someday! :yike:
-
Ok...........I'm a crabbing freaking fool. My neighbor and I got up and headed out on schedule this morning. Left the house dead on at six and had the boat in the water and on the way smooth as butter. I baited the pots while we putted out. One pot had a single turkey leg. Two pots had a leg and some herring in a bait bag with one cat of cat food as well. Fourth pot had a good sized gob of chicken that had been soaking in the Pautzes Fuel along with two cans of cat food. Pots in and motor over to shallower water to chase flunder. Half a dozen flounder and back to the pots. Half hour soak.
Four pots.
Ten keepers.
One soak.
Perfect. If you saw my previous post this morning the only purpose was to get crab for a homecoming bbq for my neighbors buddy. The crab gods knew this and shined their crabby goodness upon me. Well, we had dropped the pots back after checking them and decided to go ahead and let them soak prior to pulling. Needless to say the pots yielded 6 more keepers. They may or may not have found their way to a neighbor boat that had blanked so far. So I'm home, the boat is rinsed and I'll head back out tomorrow for a quick trip and grab my other two pots.
Hell of a morning. Best single trip so far.
-
8 keeper dungies on Thursday near Shilshole. 2 pots and a 3 hour fishin trip was all it took. Caught 1 21inch jack.
-
First pull, two pots, eight keepers, threw bavk the smallest four.
-
Nice day out on the water. Ended up with two limits once I twisted my brother in laws arm..............about a 3 second converstation.......to come meet me at the dock. I had my five and took only two soaks with two pots to get his five. Had one crabzilla that was over seven....pics to follow.
-
Ok....for me....this evening was simply an abusrdly good evening. So I slow cooked a rack of ribs. My bro in law had two steaks. We had fresh crab. Some fried taters. Jameson and soda. A pool. Not just a little pool.....I'm talking 32 by like......15? Something like that. I can almost swim laps. Nice big fat pool. So we got my neighbor also. He went crabbing with me yesterday. We are having some beverages, enoying the water, and swapping lies. Nice. Very nice. Also, did I mention I'm batch'ing it right now? Yep, wife and kids are in the midwest. Sorry, back on topic. We fry up some taters and have the crab going and the grill smoking. I'm sunburned and soaked in Jameson and just relaxing. Perfect. Fast forward to now and I'm home, sucking down the Gatorarde, doing laundy, and wonder how the house got so damn hot. What a day.
Here are some pics from this mornings crabbing.
-
After the shelling.....
-
Anyone crabbing today. I'm taking the weekend off. Looks like it may be a bit breezy in the Everett north end.
-
Just got back from dock crabbing again. Got another 5 red rocks in a 3 hour soak. Swam with the kids for most of the time and fished a bit to catch bait for tomorrow. Figured my time is better spent doing this than bear hunting. Higher success rate
-
Almost got my first dungie from the dock. He came in at 5 3/4". Biggest one from the dock yet. Mostly just pull up about 6 in a pot that are clearly too small.
-
I'll be heading out to crab tomorrow morning, leaving from the Everett marina.
-
Nice....try the SE corner of hat....around 40 or 50 feet......being treating me very well. I'm picking the wife and kids up at airport soon. They have been gone 10 days...sleeping in and making big breakfast and hanging out.
-
We are taking the weekend off we been at it pretty heavily this year, and I have enough extra crab to take over to our friends on the east side come hunting season. I will be out a couple more times because I really do enjoy it we have really been going deeper for ours lately, and getting some dandies we had one go 8 7/8" last weekend that was a record for the year.
-
8 and 7/8!
Picture? Don't think I've ever seen one that big.
-
8 and 7/8!
Picture? Don't think I've ever seen one that big.
I will have to get a pic the next weekend we are up at out place I left the shell on top of my wood pile to dry out so I can hang it up. We have a neighbor who got one at a touch over 9" on the opener that one is nailed up to his garage wall. Overall we have been getting a ton of females, but the males we are getting at 100-120 ft are absolutely huge. I went to a canned cat food safeway brand in like a seafood medly recently when I forgot some of my fish leftovers. That coupled with chicken has produced some really full pots, but like a said a ton of females this year maybe two to three males per pot.
-
Anyone going out this weekend?
Weather permitting I'll be out Sat afternoon/eveing with the wifey. Heading out of Everett and planning on sticking to my honey hole area. A little crabbing, run back in for a pint at Scuttlebutt, should be a good time. Either way if the weather turns to garbage we'll be making other plans.
-
Should be going off the dock again Saturday and Sunday. I've figured out how to run a bouy setup off the dock but I need to get a bouy and some lead line before I can make this happen
-
Like I said....you ever make it my way you have an open invitation for a boat ride to soak some pots.
-

-
Working out the logistics but I might be able to get out to drop pots Friday, pick 'em up on Saturday. Depends on the hunting buddy's wife signing the Kitchen Pass.
I'm not even married and I still get my plans jacked up by a wife! :chuckle:
-
If you are out Saturday evening maybe consider running into the waterfront to hit the Scuttlebutt?
-
Yep. I'll keep you posted on the scouting trip plans.
-
If I can convince the wife that boiling some water in the house this evening isn't going to heat the house up that much, I might get out to the dock tonight
-
Still getting them but it was slower this evening. Still pulled seven for the wife and I. Cant limit everytime I suppose.
-
Well, I think my crab season is done. Went out Saturday and had a nice time taking the wife out on the boat. She was a quick learn regarding coming up on a pot and even pulled one at the end of the evening. The thunderstorms in my area never materialized so it was pleasant enough on the water. We left the pots to soak overnight and the the A team, me, brother in law, and his brother went back out yesterday morning. It wasn't slam dunk crabbing like it has been for me but we managed. The wife and I pulled only 7 on Saturday evening and we called it good enough at 12 dungies and 6 red rock on Sunday. Here is a picture of my wife and some of the haul at the family bbq yesterday.
-
Nice catch, man. We missed you out there because we were, well, trying to get off the mountain. Didn't get home 'till 10:30 pm...
But, that let my pots soak another day. Ended up with 13 keepers in 4 pots. Not bad, but I agree it is slowing down.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg807.imageshack.us%2Fimg807%2F7435%2Fcrab819.jpg&hash=a1ec43d88bd147aed83673014c7fd0c948bbabcc)
I'll probably go out one more time for crab. We ought to talk about the upcoming silver season...
-
Nice catch.
-
Last night was a mess for me. I thought I could handle the tide movement and ended up 200 yards down the beach from the dock. Finally had to drop the pot to get back. Let the tide go slack and went to go get it again. Still couldn't get back. Dropped the pot a second time and swam the raft back to shore. Went home and got my spool of nine line. Tied it off to the raft and had my wife spool it out as I swam the raft out. When I grabbed the bouy, she tied me off to the dock. Then I used the rope to pull myself back in with the pot. After 3 hours of this dickery, 0 crabs in the pot. Pissed doesn't even begin to cover my feelings last night.
The system got too complicated from what was bringing me success so, I have simplified things and it should be better the next few weekends before it closes.
-
Sounds like you are pushing it for sure. Saw your review of the crab jell.....eh...worth a shot. I've been soaking my chicken and turkey in the pink Pautzes Fuel and that seems to be helping. However, I agree that your fresh caught flounder and bull heads are even better. That was a nice haul on the red rocks prior to you having a Gilligan moment in the raft.
-
So, what's the deal with the red rocks? Thought I read somebody say they stay on or near their rock pile and if I don't get the trap near them, they won't travel to get to the bait like dungies. Is this true? Do they have territory that they stay at? If so, it would explain why I have 0 crabs after pulling 10 even though the pot was in the same spot but it wouldn't explain how I got 10 in one pull after putting it in the same spot that the day before I got 2.
-

Gilligan moment for sure. Lesson learned and the pot is now only 200' into the channel instead of 300'. That extra 100' put me into some hard charging tidal movement. 200' from the dock is still pretty protected by the bay and easier to navigate
-
Next season if things are a little better you are going to have to save up your gas money and make the trip....we'll get you on the crab with a little less work.
-

Red rocks are less migratory than dungies for sure. They tend to stay hidden in "burrows," like rotted out logs and such. You don't see them out in the open like dungies nearly as frequently. So in my experience, yeah, you would have to get the pots closer to red rock in order to bait them in.
-
well, got 5 red rocks tonight including 2 7"ers. Pics to come. Can't believe I didn't take measured pics before. These are big but we've gotten about half a dozen that were bigger so far this year.

Those are some seriously huge reds JJ. Nice work.
-
Yep....huge for red rocks.
-
Really? Those are just a little larger than average. We've had several that were larger. I thought they got bigger. From what we've pulled in, I wouldn't even blink at these.
-
Finally got the crab dialed in, been a slow season for us up until last Friday in area 8-2. Threw the pots in and ran out to the shipwreck and picked up the little guy in the second pic. Threw out a whole limit of keepers. Had 7 keepers in one pot. A good day overall.
-
Lost a pot this morning :bash:. I hope it wasn’t stolen, maybe just got picked up by a piece of flotsam in the heavy current. It happens. Anyway I’m done for the season.
-
Nice haul.....fish and crab....
Heading out in the morning for one more quick trip. Gonna try and grind through a bunch of pots. Family obligations are keeping me from being out to long to try and troll up some silvers. Hopefully we'll bang out a quick 10 limit for us both and head in early.
-
Put my newly weighted door pot out last night. I can't wait to pull it at 6pm tonight.
-
How did it go double J?
-
quite the storys :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
How did it go double J?
.
-
Ouch, only thing I gotta worry about is the wife being mad I can't go deer and elk hunting this year. I can get her ducks though so maybe she'll let me keep my guns. :dunno:
-
DoubleJ....better get that stuff worked out....sounds like it is beginning to fester.
Made a quick trip out this morning with a buddy who has been dying to get out. He sold his boat so is having major withdrawl. We did a quick and dirty grind with 5 quick soaks and managed 6 keepers and a red. That puts 50 alone on my license. Final trip for me this morning.
-

-
Sorry to hear that. I'm one of the lucky ones. My wife is very supporting and when I leave the house I get a kiss on the cheek and a good luck and be safe. Got some pasta sauce on the stove simmering as we speak. The bear sausage that is in it is a testament to her support. I'm defenitely one of the lucky ones.
Got a final tally for my boat this crab season.
Total Dungies: 118 and about a dozen red rock.
-
Hopefully you get it all worked out John your wife seems like a nice lady. I was wondering why we never heard back from you any other weekends we would have taken you back out, but from what you typed I guess that may have been why. I guess I am lucky like H20 my wife is really supportive of my outdoor addiction, and even partakes in some of the activities.
-
Too late to revive this thread? I think not...... bring on the winter catch!
April went out last weekend (10-14) for crab, I couldn't go because I was (and still am) swamped with chores at the house. She said that in area 8-2 they are pretty thin, she only got 4 and the boat took a total of 9 for 4 licenses. Not a bad day, but since we dive for them and are used to limiting it was a little disappointing. Oh well, wait a week and a new crop will migrate in! :IBCOOL: Her catch...

Nope....not to late to revive it at all. Anyone crabbing out by Hat? Thinking of running out this Sunday.
-
Or maybe not...just looked at the marine forecast...
-
Is that area open? Or u talking hat by ANacortes?
-
I love getting crabs.
-
Is that area open? Or u talking hat by ANacortes?
8-2, yes it's open. Hat as in Gedney Island our of Everett.
-
Yes, I did check and pretty much all areas are open this year.
-
Have a few dates this weekend so will be going crabbing
My fav place to take gals is in the boat :chuckle:
