Anybody Out there use this Outfitter before? I know it's early but got to start planning now! Probably for muzzy season but keeping our options open. May depend on draws but we are all in that boat. You can PM me if you prefer. Good luck to all in the 2016 season
-
From what I understand, the owner is still waiting for his permit to guide from the usfs, but I have heard nothing but good things about him.
I will probably use him for a drop camp if I ever draw rimrock.
-
He has his permits to guide, I did a backpack trip last year and used him to pack are elk out. very professional in every aspect. heard of his drop camps being very nice set ups as well
-
I thought he was a site sponsor. I might be thinking of someone else.
-
I believe so also he has advertised in the backcountry and 2015 bulls threads. the picture's with a elk on each mule are from our trip
-
I used kent this year for my elk hunt. It was awesome. The horses were very well manered, he was very knowledgeable and helpfull. The camp, i cant say enough about. Brand new tent and cots. Pots and pans. And if we needed anything he was in there the next day delivering. He was great and i would highly reccomend white pass outfitters. If you draw goat rocks goat tag. Definitly call kent. He will put you right in the goats. This was my fist outfitter experience so i dont have a comparison, but both my dad and i were blown away by the service and accomidations..
-
Hey Outdooraddict if you get a chance can you PM me. It would be nice to know if you did Muzzy or other and a few other ????. My sons and I did a pack in 2015 and like the experience but are interested in different areas and terrain. Already Elk Hunting is stuck in my brain and it's only January.
-
Scout what was the cost of just packing the elk out?
-
200 per mule, usually does it with 2 mules per elk. we made it work on one of his down trips. but he only had 2 mules with him so he did 1 elk per mule and charged us 400, but that's not normal
-
Good deal. Thanks for the info.

Good morning all,
My brother in law and I drew two of the Goat Rock Wilderness goat tags for 2015. We used White Pass outfitters to do a drop tent in the McCall Basin area and would do it again in a heart beat. Kent and his brother Dan were outstanding and the equipment was perfect. I'm a horse guy, but my brother in law is not and the stock used to get us in the ten miles were perfect. Completely uneventful with the exception of an occasional bee hive, which is expected during that time of year. We are, get us there and leave us along type hunters, but the pre information that Kent and Dan provided was extremely beneficial and saved us days of scouting. The camp and equipment was new, well maintained and worked without any issues. So nice we stayed 3 extra days to just enjoy camp after our extremely successful hunt.
The hunt started with us scouting the McCall and North Fork glaciers, Cowlitz Clearfork Basin and Packwood Glacier areas. All hiking distance from our cozy home base in McCall. We saw roughly 25-30 goats a day with some extremely nice Billies. We took two nice Billies mid trip on separate days and the boys came in immediately "twice" to get the caped heads and meet out to the freezer. If you've ever had anything mounted you know this is critical to a good mount.
I have cabin in the White Pass area and have hunted their for over 40 years and know the country well. Kent used to run the Indian Creek Carrols before some personal reasons required him to sell and move on. He is the best asset to hunters in that area and is more than happy to help people just for the love of the sport. When he was at the corral, I often spent time cross referencing animal movements in the area and am glad to have him back in area.
The answer to your question is, if you want to get in the back country for a quality hunt give him a call. He will definitely set you up! My only regret is I don't get to goat hunt again next year.
Let me know if you have any other questions,
Ugly Rack

Congrats on your goat's sounds like a great hunt.
-
Congratulations and thank you for the report.
-
Congrats on the goat. Looks like a good mature animal. Love the heavy coat.
It always nice to get a good report on an outfitter.
Glad it worked out :tup

pretty sure hes the one that ruined one of our elk areas, due to all the drop camps he started doing.

Sure wish you guys would have your facts straight before you start making any accusations.
I have never over crowded any area, and most of you are thinking of Jerry Jefferson past owner of pacific crest outfitters.
And its not about money, no one becomes an outfitter for the money. Its so I can help a few people get into the back country and enjoy the solitude.

So if any one of you desk jockeys want to call me out, anywhere, anytime.
Sure gets old all you diy hunters bad mouthing the outfitters, you guys might spend a couple weeks in the Mtns. While im up there cutting trails and cleaning up half the junk that a lot of DIY LEAVE BEHIND. So if any one has a problem with WPO please give me a call. Thanks to all the positive people. and the rest of you can pack your own Bulls out. :chuckle:
-
Pretty sure? Pretty harsh comment if you are only pretty sure. Don't we have a fairly new forum guideline about disparaging comments like that.

Money talks and Bullsnot walks.
As far as WPO's camp placement goes I cannot speak.
As far as clearing trails goes WPO's..... I have cleared trails up there for the past 40 years and anyone that is cutting blow downs out of the way is appreciated. Blow downs and limbs sticking out are a common cause of pack string chaos.
I'm just curious, as an outfitter are you allowed to use a chainsaw in the wilderness?
-

Ruined "your" elk area. What area on the USFS lands was yours? Private property? Didn't think so. Take your sniveling somewhere else, there might be a city park in Seattle you can occupy.
Buglebuster has a point. Was the wilderness meant to have every father and son parking at the the trailhead and walking in? No. One of the concerns I and many others have about outfitters being allowed in the wilderness is the risk of an area having too much traffic in the years to come. Wildernesses should be kept pristine. A lot of people will say "hey, we should hunt here from now on" after being guided on a hunt, and as a result, year after year, the area starts becoming more populated with hunters.

No. That's illegal. Can't run motorized equipment in the wilderness.
I've heard they make an exception for trail clearing but I don't know that's why I asked.
Obviously fire crews do?

WDFW has an answer for this.
It's called Quality hunts..............Limited tags.........Draw or don't go.
Their management continues to limit our "opportunity".

Have to get permission.
Exactly.

I'm sorry to offend anyone, but when you run into a couple groups of hunters in an area you've never seen a soul, and they tell you the exact name, white pass outfitters. Its hard to make that up lol. Unless the other outfitter is telling them to use tour name? But I don't think that's the case.
I'm actually not to worried about it all, I've moves on to greener pastures.

Here's the flip side to the coin:
If you want pristine wilderness that means that the human presence be kept to a minimum. If that happens, how do you expect people to have the broader public have a vested interest on what goes on there? The Forest Service already has a minimal budget for trail clearing and maintenance, if even fewer care on down the road, at what point will they just give up maintenance on anything in the Wilderness areas? The more people there are to tell their elected officials on what needs to happen the better off we are. Few people take into consideration (here on the east side) that our forests with massive fuel loads are not what was here around the time of the pioneers. The forests were mainly pines with open grass underneath, the white furs were minimal. That wilderness was not inspite of man, but because the natives would regularly set fire to the under growth. They cared about the forest and the animals which they hunted and lived off of. Today there's fewer people caring about the forests and the forests show it. I've kicked around in a few designated "Wilderness" areas and from what I've seen is they lack management tools that "Back Country" areas do and are worse off for it. The notion of "pristine" wilderness is a pipe dream and not very conducive to healthy forest management.

What a lot of you DIY dont realize I cant control the illegal outfitters in the area. I know of 4 working the area now and they dont play by the rules because the FS does nothing about it. The guide lines I have to follow are a lot stricter than the rules for a DIY HUNTER. I'M watched all the time and my camps are checked on more than anyone's.
As an outfitter I cant over camp an area, if my clients aren't getting game or seeing game then my business would go under. And I sure would like to know wear your hunting in the st of wa and not use to seeing a soul. I've hunted, guided and outfitted in the goat rocks and William o Douglas for yrs. And unless youve got horses and mules you should not be hunting wear my camps are because your meat will spoil before you can get it out.
Thanks again for the positive feed back from most of you.
I will be at the Yakima sportsmens show and would really like to meet some of you guys. Good luck this year; Fair Chase Wilderness Hunts Only For The Real Hunter

If I go, I'll swing by.

Naches, there are areas that have been permitted and have had hunting camps for decades. They aren't ruined. It's not like a river run.

Most don't even know there's a difference between hunter hours and outfitter hours.
There's lots of people out there that don't play by rules. Most hunters have not a clue what it takes to run an outfitting buidness with mules snd horses. You guys have to spend a ton of money to do it all above board. Those that say outfitters over crowd areas, you need to realize if they do that their customers are even more upset about it than you are and it damages their business in a big way. Illegal outfitters will put people anywhere they can fit a tent and call it good. They don't have near the out if pocket expenses legal, licensed, and permitted outfitters do.
The best way to have a little money in the outfitting business is to start out with a lot, by the time the expenses are all dealt with it will be little enough.
-
I seriously doubt that the majority of the people who hire an outfitter are going to have the equipment or physical capability to go back to that area the next year on their own.
-

Never met you, dont know who you are, but it sound s like you are providing a great service to folks. Thank you
If I ever draw a bull tag, you'll be the one. Later.
-
I haven't seen the mystical forest service employee lifting a hand to clear a trail in years.
PERIOD.
Back in the day they had a ton of stock at Randle and actually did something.
Those days are over because they have no money now. LOL
On a side note.
The same fern feelers who take exception to the horses and mules on the trail should bow down when they pass. If it weren't for the horse people the trails wouldn't have been built in the first place.
If it weren't for groups like the back country horseman, hunters, and guides the trails would be impassable today.
Probably would make for some really good hunting.
-
It should be noted that in all my wilderness experience I have only had trouble with an outfitter once.
That was in the Selway and because we were over the heartbeat rule.
He turned us into the FS who then rode in 25 miles with some collage chick and gave us a lecture.
Good times and no crowds there.

the part about how i should not be hunting with out horse and mules "where your camps are" is laughable. we have pulled plenty of bulls out on our backs from those areas without issue. These areas arnt really all that huge in the grand scheme of things.. this year i too had my first "outfitter experience" in a place we have hunted 20 plus yrs..
-
You don't want to use an outfitter- then don't. But the people who pay for an outfitter's services have just as much right to be there as you do.
-
Careful Bob, you'll raise the ire of the all roads should be gated people too! After all. It is all about them. Heck with the people that aren't able to hunt the way they do.
I hope to someday be able to use the services of White Pass outfitters. They seem like a class act!
-
And I agree with you high hunter our areas are not that big, but when its 70+ degrees
during archery season, most, not all hunters cant make a double trip before your meat is starting to spoil. Even if your only 7 miles in. I can and have done it on my back.Just got smarter.Again thanks for all the positive response.

I started this tread with a simple request of info from which I got some good feedback and some that seemed to personalized the request. I meet with the outfitter along with one of my adult sons at the Puyallup Sportsman's Show and after several visit and discussion's we needed to make a decision. One of the comments from my son was that the outfitter cares about what he does and gave a answer to every one of our questions without hesitation. We book a muzzy pack in trip and I will post our experience after the trip is completed. When all is said and done it's all about being in the bush and sharing time with Mother Nature and my sons and friends. Meat hanging is the pursuit, getting it done is a job. Good Luck To All In The 2016 Hunting Season.

No kidding. I am also debating on this year or next year with White Pass Outfitters. He will gladly get my business.

Ill go BS with him next weekend at our show. Come on down, ill buy ya a beer or 18 lol.
-
congrats on living the dream !
-
Lol.. blaming an outfitter for the increase in back country hunters.. Must not watch the outdoor channel or read Eastman's journal or any other similar publication. Since Cam's book come out there's been a steady increase in hunters venturing deeper and deeper. Most guys that will pay to go on a hunt aren't the same that are diy hunting.
-
Personally I think WA should require all hunters have an outfitter no matter what the situation.
If you can prove you are not a hunter then you could take an exemption on your tax return upon proving you have medical insurance. No insurance required if your only hunting benchlegs. Of course this rule would not apply to same sex marriages and pot users would be granted additional days to hunt based on their handicap.
Of course all of this would have to be monitored by a nonprofit state run organization located deep in the heart of the 206.

Kent, I enjoyed our conversation in Yakima. Good luck to you I believe you run a quality operation there.

HI All
Myself, my son and a friend use White Pass Outfitters last fall. Kent and his brother where awesome. They checked on us almost everyday, the camp was great. We saw like 2 hunters a day. They do a super job and a reasonable cost, they really earn they money. I hope one of us draws a tag again up there, we will be using Kent.
-
Just wanted to give Kent another shout out. I've been bothering him with a million questions before putting down a deposit and he's gotten back to me about everything nice and quick. All his references were stellar as well! We just paid our deposit for a drop camp. Can't wait to go!
-
Are you paying for a drop camp to hunt cows and spikes if you don't draw a bull tag?

Too many irons in the fire this fall, but sooner than later I will use WPO and I'm really looking forward to it.
