In the bushcraft thread some people talked about forging their own bush craft tools. I've always been interested in making my own tools. I've started this journey not long ago. I first built a small gas forge but soon learned I needed more.
-
So I built a bigger torch and then a bigger forge. Scored a peace of railroad track and made it in to an anvil like object.
-
Been doing a ton of research and practicing what I've learned. Getting closer to my goals of making all my own tools. Assembling the tools needed as I can
-
Looking good :IBCOOL:

Few more

Pretty cool!

 That's some great work. Keep the project pics coming.

Will have some hammers and drifts finished this weekend I hope. Made several chisels and drifts, spring fuller, hold fast, and hot cut this week too. Every thing has been repurposed steel.
-
Some good skills to have. Custom 'rustic' items like door handles/cabinet handles sometimes have good sale opportunities. If you weren't so far away I'd try to convince you that you need a half dozen sections of track for an ore cart. :chuckle:
-
Cool jasnt, I started blacksmithing not long ago myself.

Are you planning to keep it real traditional or plan on going to techniques like pattern welding and Damascus?
Quench and tempering?
-
are you using any coal? if you are then where are you getting it?

im using charcoal right now. Gets super hot fast but burns up a bit faster than coal from what I've heard. I know there is a guy in Spokane that's part of the nwba that sells forging cokeAre you planning to keep it real traditional or plan on going to techniques like pattern welding and Damascus?

no plans for damascus yet but I have been hardening and tempering tools that won't see a lot of heat. Blades are on the menu
-
Made a quick gambrel the other day. Had a huge ram on it few hours later. No Bending or flexing even with hard pulling and I didn't even heat treat. 1/2" bolt steel.
-
Interesting thread. Tagging along.
-
Just started back into the heat myself. Been planning to add it to the knifesmithing, but only just got to it this season. Having a ton of fun! Built a forge, scored a 100lb anvil, made a few knife billets, just made a fully forged knife yesterday out of a huge old lathe chisel! Going to have it at the Pheasants Forever banquet next week, along with about 5 others... depending what I can get gripped up by then.
Will try to bring some pics over...

Wow very nice work. Very jealous of the anvil!
Thank you, I got the anvil and a rivet forge from my wife's Grandfather
-
Great looking blades @rainshadow1
-
Finishing up my 3rd set of tongs. These are wide flat bit jaws for holding 1/2"-5/8" square stock. They work great! Very pleased with the business end but I want to get my reins a bit cleaner. Also wanted to share my air valve for the charcoal forge. 2" pipe and electrical junction box. Cut half the lip off the door and use just 1 screw. Works very well
-
Very cool, something I would like to get into!! I have a good friend who makes some very cool stuff!!
-
Will be making my own coni dogs soon
-
Awesome work!!! Blacksmithing is something that has peaked my interest recently. Keep the post comings!!!
-
my wife was out antique shopping and found this anvil and sent me a text (half joking, who needs more than one anvil right ?) $ 50 for a 52 # anvil. A really good buy !
originally it had a vice on one end, I have done a number of searches but have found little info on the anvil or the manufacture ?
-
 I seen a Peter wright on Craig's list. 450 for 105lb. They always show up when I don't have the funds
Have you asked about it on ifi

Decided to switch it up. I like this setup way better than horizontal! Much more steel under the hammer, Small horn on the base and center web is a fuller. Not sure what I'll do with the other side of the base just yet. I'll never use it horizontal again!
-
This one is fully forged... all except the cutting edge finish...

What steel are you using for those Steve? I'm working on my first knife today
-
Hopefully ill see you guys on forged in fire one of these days!!!!
-
That was a vintage lathe chisel. I'm initiating myself on high-carbon salvage.
-
Best you tube video I've seen was a Viking style axe made from a rail road spike.
-
I saw something today that would be SO COOL! Hinges made out of 2 horseshoes. The ends of one horseshoe were curled back onto themselves and the ends of the other horseshoe were turned outward so they fit in the space created by the curled ends. VERY cool looking! I'll see if I can post a photo of them!
-
I found some stainless 3/8" rod today. Should make some great meat hooks. Found on old ax last weekend. May repurpose it
-
Made my first hammer today

Very cool Jasnt

Set number 4 completed today. They are getting easier and a little better looking imo

Thank you

Started my first bush/camp knife. It's going to my brother for all the free spring steel he gave me

http://murphyauction.com
Boardman OR, tree farm auction, they have sawmakers anvils for sale (never heard of saw anvils)
for anyone interested use auction site search tool to find them. I may go Thursday, see how work schedule goes ?
-
Ok so here is a few question for you guys in the know with steel. I know files can make great knives etc.
What about wrenches, hammers, circle saw blades, pruners etc? I see this stuff at auction all the time and goes super cheap so I am always thinking about grabbing it for when I dive into steel one day.
-
I don't have a lot of experience carpsniper but i think that would be a great way to get started, the tools you mentioned would be high carbon alloys and can be forged into useful cutting tool of your design. As you gain more experience you could then order the specific stock for the right application.
-
Yeah that's what I was thinking. Stuff goes cheap and before getting to the spendy metal, rail road spikes and old tools, mower blades etc.
I was looking at some shovels and I love ulu blades. So I might have to pick up some at the next auction
-
Files are good knife steel. Spring steel can be very good as well
-
Great list to have! Thanks!
Lots of the big sawmill circular saws are not the same base steel as the teeth. Sometimes the teeth are even carbide. But the base steel is often 5160, which is a decent performer but can rust terribly easily.
I just made a Damascus blade with a Nicholson file and some 1080 from a disc blade... not dissimilar enough, but if welded up great. Going to make a larger pukko out of it, I'll post a pic...
-
Bush knife is coming along nicely. Going to be antler handle of course.
Look forward to seeing the pukko
Made some more tongs for hammer stock and finished my bb'q fork
-
good work ! dig the BBQ forks
-
Look what followed me home. At least 120 lbs of spring steel
-
This is the polished Damascus blade...
First forged damascus. Nicholson file and 1080 disc blade. 18 layers. No nickle so it didn't etch very distinct, so I polished it.

Does anyone want to buy this? I can build a custom for you with it, your design input. Or you can build it yourself.
Otherwise I have other plans for it... Limited time offer! I have 3 jobs going, then after those I'm going to make a Puukko out of it and keep it in the family!
-
Rain....
Pardon the dumb question but how will it hold up as in the edge? My daughter is 8, just starting to shoot....maybe she needs a knife as well.
-
It's 1080 and a Nicholson file, hardened really well, should be pretty darn excellent, actually.
-
Ok...onto other thread...
-
Friend asked for some hoof picks made from a wrench. May make a few of these style aswell
-
Nice!
-
What's the show forged by fire on history any chance you or anyone from here making that show? Like watching it once in a while, pretty cool to see the knives and weapons they make.

cant speak for anyone else but I have a lot of learning todo before I get to that level!

If any of you guys want a couple lawn mower blades to hammer into something, I just replaced mine on my riding lawn mower, they are free if you want them
-
LM blades would be good for lots, but not really knives, they're low carbon, they can't be too hard or they'll shatter.

what kind of things would they be good for?
-
Arts or crafts or steel equipment, fixtures, etc. Most things, just not stuff that needs to harden like tool and knife steel. That's why lawn mowers get dull so easy, they have to be soft or it'd be like a frag grenade going off anytime they hit a rock.

One of the jobs I held as a kid was a blacksmith. I built a small forge out of refractory brick and heated it with a propane weed burning torch. I drilled the jet a bit oversized so it was super rich. I welded a piece of stainless steel tubing that ended in the mixer cup and ran up the handle by the gas valve. I ran shop air to the tubing through a simple 1/4" needle valve. I had to get the forge warm and then I could start increasing air and fuel till I got to the point where I had 10 pieces of 7/8" 5150 about 24" into the forge. I had a 3x12" window to stuff into and it would have the bars from room temp to white hot in 10 minutes easily.
If I tried to come up on the air too soon it would put the flame out. It took about 5 minutes to get where I could throttle it up, but once hot....it was hot hot. We had a few other forges that were 4x10 feet in size that burned through several showerhead sized gas nozzles. The gas bill was nuts.

Well I decided I needed to expand my hobby of knife making from stone to steel to. I wont be forging from scrap for awhile. I will be working bar stock. I'm just about done with all my orders. I also got the stuff to do kydex for holsters and sheaths. So wish me luck. I wont get up and going probably tell fall because of hay and grain. I am going to get my forge built hopefully in the next few weeks.

Waiting on a piece of equipment to show up and that didn't pan out. So I decided to dive in to my forge build :IBCOOL:
I have it all built. Got to hook up my burner tomorrow at some point and get a test fire roaring in it :IBCOOL:
I'll post some pics in another thread, when I get a chance.
Also got a quench tube build today to.

I contacted Steve at Incandescent-Iron, he doesn't have a class until Aug, so he gave me two names to check with and I'm chatting with David at Morgan-Jade. His are $160 for an 8 hour day. I also have a good friend who lives near me who has been doing this for a while and has agreed to teach me what he knows. He's an old SERE instructor, so he likes to teach. :)
-
I'd love to join ya with David, that's very cheap for an eight hour class. What does the class cover?
. I sent Steve an email and never heard from him
-
Here is David's e-mail. blacksmithdavidmji@gmail.com I asked him for the Intro to Black Smithing class. He does 2 to 3 days depending on what I want and what I need. I told him I would not be able to start until after spring bear over in Idaho was done, I'm just too busy for the next 3 or 4 weeks. He said not problem. I'm headed down to the Tri-Cities tonight to buy a 140# Kohlswa anvil and a post vice. :) :) :)

For any guys in the Portland area that might be getting into black smithing.

Went down to the Tri-Cities and bought a nice 140# Kohlswa anvil and a Post Vice. I'll post some photos once I get it looking spiffy. He also had this 1918 Fisher, 322#. what a beautiful brute!! Oh it's for sale as well, but will set you back $2000. :)

I have been a doing blacksmith work for about 30 years. I don't do it full time any more but I still like to play in the fire.
I have a propane forge and a couple anvils, so if anyone is interested in making some basic stuff, or not so basic, let me know and you can come over and burn some steel.
Just let me know what you want to make and bring you're material and we can set something up.
I am in the process of buying a knife grinder, so currently I am not set up for knives but that will happen soon.
I live near Maple valley and have some time on the weekends till hunting season.

Great offer
There is a guy on ebay called Oregon blade smith and he sells some great knife grinder stuff if you are looking around.
I am a DIY guy a lot of the time, but if I decide to go big one of these years. This is the turn key package I will probably buy

Well I took David's class at Morgan Jade iron works.
Took Daves beginers class sat. First impression was good, shop is well organized and clean. It was easy to see he takes pride in his work. It was me and one other guy ,I was glad it wasn't crowded.
After some discussion on what I had done and what I wanted to learn we decided we would make some tools. I have a slight obssesion with hammers so we set out to make a handed hammer punch, hardy dish for facing rounding hammers (hope that's the proper term), and a hardy cut off.
Hammer punch would be 5160 1 1/8" round. He explained how to figure out stock length for 2D tapers and 3D tapers. After deciding stock lenght he cut half a dozen peaces and fired up the ribbon burner.we then squared up our stock on the power hammer, measured and center punched the eyes.
We took turns running the punch and striking over a striking anvil. Once punched we began drifting the eyes with 2 drifts and drawing out the cheaks. Then back on the power hammer to draw out the punch. Finished up over the papa Rhino and cleaned them up on a 2"x72belt grinder. Wow could that thing eat steel!
We made the hardy tools from some 2" truck axel. Used the power hammer to take it down to 1" square. And upset in the hardy again on the striking anvil with both of use striking while walking around it. Took turns striking and calling with the handled round die. Finished the hot cut on the power hammer.
Daves style of teaching worked very well for me imo. He would show use how to do it while explaining the Whats and whys then step back and let use work threw trial and error correcting only when we were starting to really head south.
It was a great experience for me. I felt like I learned quite abit and that we accomplished a lot in the 8 hours. He also invited me back for a hammer in later next month
-
Great work Jasnt !
-
Thanks bud. That papa rhino was a very impressive anvil. It's at the top of my list!
-
Sweet!!! That sounds like a blast.
I'm working on two 2x72 grinders right now. One is home/scarp built and the other is a built frame from Oregon blade maker. I'm getting ready to start hay and been heavy into field work but home to get them setup before to crazy long.
-
I'm deffenitly going to have to build me a better belt grinder!
-
So I am scheduled to take a beginning blacksmithing class on 10th and 11th of June with John Huffstutter at Quailside Forge. Pretty excited to take the class.
So the other night I'm watching Forged in Fire, "Fan Favorites" TV show, and low and behold the guy who won on the show is the same guy I bought my Anvil from. Very cool! It was David Roeder in Kennewick, WA. I have some tongs and a hammer. Still looking to get a couple more hammers in the 2 to 2.5 pound range and a forge.
-
That's pretty cool. Let us know how the class goes

That's cool, I saw that episode as well. Im still searching for a anvil. Out here they are so spendy in the Midwest they go for so much less. Our family friend is going back that and got a killer deal on one last trip he went out there. So I am hoping he can find me something good and haul it home. If not I have a 100lber picked out that will work.
-
I'm still seriously looking at the papa rhino.
-
That thing is a beast for sure.
This is the one I think if our friend does not find one or I pick one up before to long.
http://www.centaurforge.com/100-lbs-TFS-Blacksmith-Anvil-Double-Horn-Eligible-for-Free-Shipping-See-Home-Page-for-full-details/productinfo/79525/
With their first time discount puts it to my door for 530.00. I like the big work face and as I am more getting into blades and cutting stuff without a hole bunch of steel to pound. I think it would do good for me.
-
Anything that gets ya working steel is good. You won't be disappointed with centaur forge.
I was thinking about the NC Calvary with the turning cams. may still order it for smaller work like blades but hammers is what lights me up
-
I to need a small furnace. I'm no artist but I did work in the industry for 10 years. I'm kinda wondering if I'm to soft but get me some heat and I'll give it a try.
-
OMG JUST HIT PICKING HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!! I JUST HIT THE MOTHER LOAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will get some pic's up after a bit.
-
Don't leave us in suspense

Green! :)
-
Very green :chuckle: I'm JACKED. Still going to have our family friend see about finding me a big girl in the Midwest but I got all I need now. Wasn't planning on using a old school forge but may have to teach myself and play with it. For the price I paid for this monster lot I could not say no :chuckle:
-
Looks like my rcbs gear. Awesome score bud!
-
thx lots of good stuff to play with one of these days. I need to get some hay in the barn and dirt worked :bash:
Blasted soggy spring.
One more big anvil and Ill bet set for what I want and need to be fully ready to roll :chuckle:
I picked up a HUGE wrench the other day I plan on turning into a camp axe.
-
I put a few things up for sale that I don't plan on using. Incase any of you guys might need a post vice or some tongs.
http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php?topic=213895.msg2847450#msg2847450
-
Looks like your post vice is missing the spring
-
Yes it will need a spring if you don't want to move it by hand :chuckle:, the jaws open and close. From what I have read any spring steel can be used to make a replacement. If a guy wants to use one. I was just going to use it as is. I'm pretty sure they would not be to hard to make looking at the designs of them online but I did note that in the listing now.
-
Yes very easy to make one. I believe I even have a spar one if you end up keeping it
-
Thank you for the great offer.
I need to make a spring fuller when I get time this fall and start more projects. Got to get my grinders finished up in the evenings when I get a few mins. Finally got the treadmill torn apart and re wired. Plus all my parts are here now, just need some spare time which is hard to find this time of year to bust them out.

My uncle found a "hammer" my grandpa made when he was smithing. He gave it to me. It's a handled hot cut in need of some TLC. I look forward to putting it back in service.
-
VERY cool! I have my blacksmithing classes this weekend.
-
Let us know how it goes Fred

Look forward to seeing it brought back and put in use :IBCOOL:

Had a GREAT weekend. Used a propane forge for the first day and a half and yesterday afternoon we forged in coke. So hooked now. Can't wait to get my shop set up and start improving what tiny little skill I have. :) One thing that was very cool, I ended up taking my class with John Huffsttuer, he lives 2 miles from me and back in the mid 2000s he was my Commander. So it was fun catching up and learning from him. Great shop and lots of fun. I'll post some photos of the things I made tonight. Anyone going to the Hammer In June 24th and 25th here in Spokane?

Very nice, Machias
-
Sweet looks like a blast and catching up with a old friend is always great.
I hit the scrap yard/hole in the wall. I scored some stuff for junk yard projects/sculptures and then scored a big farrier rasp for 5.00!!!! That thing has a couple knives in it or one mondo knife. Was a good day :IBCOOL:
-
Nice job. I love the poker.
-
Thanks guys, lots of room for improvement. Looking forward to getting my own forge set up and start practicing!
-
Gas or solid fuel?
-
Eventually I want both, but going to start with a gas forge.
-
Very nice, Machias
:yeah:

i would recommend looking in to a ribbon burner. Very efficient. Search " ifi forges 101 ".

Dressed up grandpas handled hot cut and made one more for my striking "anvil" (cast steel tractor weight) from 1 3/16" axel. Did all the work on my vertical rail anvil except upsetting in the modified hardy.
-
Looks great!!!
-
Thank you
-
Had to get some stuff and hit one of a couple spots I love to dig for rusty gold!!!!
Mega scores.
2 double pointed pick axe heads, 4 knife blades
2 USA made steel wrenches, one will be a blade, one might turn into a hatchet
A chunk of pipe for my tong rack I'm going to make
Some steel rings for junk yard art
A scarp head from a pick axe with a large flat blade. Ill make a ulu or chopper/cleaver out of it.
Then found a huge score 6 mega sections of band saw blades from the old klickitat mill!!!!!
Then 2 big saw blades from a craigslist score!!!
Good day!!!

Here are some goodies near Goldbar.

Last weekend I attended the Understanding and History of Blacksmithing held at the Northwest Museum of Art in Spokane.
We spent time at the forge and watched a very interesting documentary titled The Devil’s Blacksmith, its about an hour long but I could not find the complete movie, here is what I did find - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHklYJ7XWqeM9vssHufS8_Q/videos
They also had zombie auditions at the Museum….I passed.

Nice score carp!
-
Well my swather went down so had a couple hrs yesterday to mess around.

They look great!!!
:yeah:
-
Thanks guys. Bunch more stuff to come when I get some down time
-
Anyone able to get some use out of some scrap disk brake rotors before I toss them?
-
made a hot chisel a while back out of some H 10 and thought I would try it out, so I made a couple hot dog roasters for the camp fire. I used some 1/4 x1/4 stainless steel and split the fork, added some twists and back twists in the stem and used some antler I had laying around for the handle.
-
Dude those are awesome
-
Those turned out sweet!!!!
-
Love those forks. 304 SS?
I had a blast at the hammer in. Picked up a set of tongs and a 260lb block of steel to replace my rr track anvil. It's 3.5"-12"-22"
-
not sure what stainless it is, just something had laying around. I got some scrap rebar and made my wife a garden gate, then I had to make a spider to go with it. the spider is made out of 2 spoons and some old spokes from my panhead.
-
don't know why my pictures are all sideways, sorry
-
Nice work. Love the gate and spider
-
That gate is sweet!!!
-
Had a great time at the Hammer in today, sorry I missed yesterday's get together.
-
it'd be killer of you guys went on Forged in fire on the history channel.

i was looking for ya Saturday. Met Denali and his wife but didn't know it was them till after I got home lol. He was too quick to grab up some tongs before I could get my wallet out. I did get a nice long set for 2" round

We'll have to meet up at the Spokane Fair or some other event!
-
We should have a hunt wa hammer in, I could host, early September perhaps ?
-
I'd go!!!
-
Me too!
-
Depending on my work load and hunting seasons. I would for sure try to make it!!!
-
If I'm not hunting, I'd go
-
Thanks for the replies, we can fire up the out door pizza oven and hammer on some iron !
-
I've started working on my anvil block. This stuff is tough! Spark test like my hammers. Bottom pic is similar to my plans for this
-
Oh nice that will be handy!!!!
-
Nice!!
-
Making some progress
-
two recent scores , a 6" reconditioned vice off of a WW2 ship and a mini anvil from my father-in-law.
My Father-in-law's heath is deteriorating rapidly, because of the uncertainty, I will not be able to host H W hammer in at this time, I really want to do it but need some closure first.
I have a list of some very competent and skilled individuates that I intend to invite.. it should be a lot of fun ... will keep you posted

Sorry to hear about the fil! Hammer in can wait. Family comes first.
Love the mini anvil!

:yeah:
-
Thanks guys
-
How long does it normally take you guys to complete a project? I always thought this would be real fun but don't know if I have the time.
-
I would get started jpmiller, my time is limited as well i have like five projects in some phase of completion  I belive you will find it rewarding.
-
I agree with Denali. My time is very limited but I find time. 30 min here hour there. Very stress releaving
-
:yeah: all done with hay and harvest. After some field work and planting. I am going to start finishing some projects and building my grinders and hammering some steel :IBCOOL:
-
Well you guys won't be too popular with my wife for the encouragement lol think I'll look into it a little closer then
-
New gas forge is almost finished
Helium tank forge with a frosty T burner. At 10 psi

Columbia Fire & Iron Blacksmiths hammer in October 7-8th in Spokane
I plan on going, I hope other hunt-wa members can also !
-
I'll be there
-
Finally got a moment to play with the new "anvil" after getting back from bear camp. I love it. Didn't get much time but I got a steak flipper started
-
Good stuff :IBCOOL:
-
Well after trials and many errors I have finished my 7th set of tongs. They hold very well and feel good in the hand tho I did make some mistakes. Got my V a little to one side and that caused plenty of issues getting them to line up so I ended up hammering them flat and trying to form them around 1/2" round. The jaws don't look pretty but they do hold very well. I learned a lot on these and think my next set will be much much better. I like this style. Slitting is much faster than drawing out! This started as 1"X5/16" flat bar. I saw this demo on wcb"s YouTube Chanel
-
Nice job!!
-
Thank you Fred
-
Hammer in on 7 & 8 Oct at Morgan Jade Iron Works in Spokane.
-
I'll be there
-
I don't think I will :( I'll be out hunting :) ...maybe I can swing by in the afternoon one of the days!
-
Cool topic and fun to see the projects!
-
Stared on a handled slitter yesterday. Should speed up my tong making and stop me from burning my wrist. Head is from an old tire iron and handle is from an old grounding rod.
Got my post vice mounted last week
Also got started on my striking anvil. I was going to drift the hardy square but the rain last week kept me under cover so I modified a cold chisel and cut it square. Needs a bit of a touch up but it's coming along nice
-
Great thing, i always wanted to forge something alone :/
-
Well I hate the slitter. Should have made it inline instead of 90deg. Going to make a new one
-
New slitter is ready to grind

-
Good stuff! I cant wait tell December and January so I can spend a day or 2 in my shop!!!!
-
I went to the hammer in this morning in Spokane, it was very well attended a lot of young boys and a few girls, all hammering away ! it was nice to see.
high wind warning for the lower Basin so I bugged out early, did not stake down the wheel line yet and I did not want it to roll away
-
I did the same but went home and punched a hammer solo. Think it turned out well.
Also mounted my anvil on a stump after hauling 5 tons of hay. No more forging sitting down at the wrong height
-
cool jasnt, how big is the hammer ?
-
Good stuff!!!
-
Hammer is about 3lbs. Got a couple 4lb cut as well. This is unknown steel so it will not be heat treated. I will use them for striking hardened tools. Just waiting on some O1 and h13 to make my drifts. Got another set of tongs done (flat bit) but haven't taken a pic yet.
-
Got my stump banded and made a bending fork for straighting coil spring
-
Neat stuff jasnt. It seems like a fun hobby. I am slowly gathering parts and pieces to get into the game. First off I have to teach myself to weld. Just picked up a little Lincoln 140C and am wiring up my garage for some 220 and a couple dedicated 110 circuits.
Has anyone used one of these portaband tables?:
http://www.swagoffroad.com/SWAG-V40-Portaband-Table_p_63.html (http://www.swagoffroad.com/SWAG-V40-Portaband-Table_p_63.html)
I like the idea of just mounting my portaband to it rather than taking up more space with a dedicated band saw at this time.
-
Put a hardy in my "anvil" and got another bending fork done. Also first chisel to clean up the hardy. First hidden tang. Wip

For the last few years our immediate family has exchanged homemade gifts for Christmas. I made my daughter a purse hanger. (to hang purse off of bar or table)
Eight layer Damascus billet was made using 1095 and 15N20 steel.
I drilled about 1/3 of the way into billet to give it a rain drop or circular effect. I used a butane torch to give it some color.
She loves turtles, I hope she likes it.
-
Awesomeness!!!!!! I need to make about another 4-5 pairs of tongs and then get to work on some project and some blades!!!!!!
-
denali, that is fantastic!!!! She will love it! What an awesome gift!!
-
Very nice job bud. Love it.
-
Been busy myself.
-
I got bored and decided to lite my forge and heat my shop last week. Figured I would save some money on Christmas presents an make my own.
I started with a coil off a 69' chevy nova, cut off a chunk threw it in the forge and started pounding.I did a heat treat in oil, and tempered them in the oven, A trip to home Depot for $5.00 worth of walnut and some epoxy. Three knives for just under $12.00.
-
Nice work roscoe
Yesterday I made a wider bottom fuller
-
Got some work done today. Finished drifting my soft hammer. Fits the handles ok after a quick touch up with the rasp.
I finially finished the hot cut I made at class.
Started straighting some coil and decided to make some hot punches and a small fuller punch. Then figured I may as well make some punch tongs. Radiused the edges on the bottom swage and made my first rivet with it. Also made the rivet for the tongs
-
Great work guys !
here is a bell ornament I made using thin wall pipe, the top pinched down with a fuller and bottom flared on anvil horn.
-
Nice knives roscoe!!
Great job guys!!!
-
Made my first feather today

Did that tickle your fancy? :chuckle:

Few more steak flippers today

Nice!!! I have put my blacksmithing on temporary hold until I get moved over and set up shop in Idaho. So hopefully by June or so I will finally get to making some things.
-
Few more today.
I wish I was moving to Idaho Fred
-
nicely done
-
Thanks bud
-
What do you guys do with the stuff you're making? Are you selling it or giving it away to friends and family?
-
Gifts and for personal use at this point for me .
-
Same for me tho I am willing to sell some things
-
Been busy in the shop with all this wet weather
-
Dragons
-
VERY Cool!!!!
-
Making a fire poker with dragon head handle.
-
Any use for I beam cutoffs? I've got a couple at work right now that they asked me to get rid of, if anyone has a use for them I can save them and figure out how to get em picked up later. Theyre eight inches wide between a foot and eighteen inches long. If nobody wants em I'll bury them.
-
As a professional farrier of 23 years I've made plenty of horseshoes, pritchels, and other tools. If you guys want to see some awesome metalworking you should check out the "world championships of black smithing" on YouTube. Tons of in depth videos concerning how to improve your smithing.
"WCB" holds lots of competitions all over the place. Several every year in the northwest.
In my opinion the best practice you can get in your forge is by making chain or gate hooks.
I've made plenty of shoes out of rebar or old rasps. I once made a pair of bullriding Spurs out of 000 plates. They were to neat to use so I hung em on the wall of the shop I made em in. They're still hanging up after 15+ years
-
Our family make handmade gifts for Christmas, I made my daughter a yanagiba sushi knife. She is a very good cook I think she will like it.
its made of 1095, differential quench, hallow grind on back side, flat grind on front, handle is ash/cherry

Looks great

Needed a better top tool to make the feathers so I cut some tie rod (4140ish)and made one. It works well but needs sharpened often so I’m remaking it from O1
The h13 punch and drift are awesome!
-
Looks like your staying busy making cool stuff. I use to have a hatchet that a buddy made me similar to what you have there, it was pretty sweet.

after I made it I was thinking it’s very hatchet like and with a heat treat it would probably be a great little hatchet. Would need thinned down some. After I finish the O1 tool I’ll repurpose it for a trapping ax
-
Finished up the slitter in O1 and another set of tongs and did a smaller drift for my struck tools. Picked up a bunch of square stock today and I need to get some steak flippers done. May do some dragon head flippers
-
Does anyone know of a place in eastern Washington that sells forging coke? I sold my propane forge a couple years ago and wanna start again. Got a brake drum, rebar, and a welder so I think that’ll be a fun build. Gonna use the rebar to make my Tongs too.
Or should I buy coke online?

Search nwba few of the members sell it in 50lb bags

LOVE the bottle openers!!
I'm about four weeks away from having my shop built. Once that happens I am going to start collecting my Blacksmithing tools, anvil and forge. Can't wait to finally get back into it
