Title: Black smithing
Post by: jasnt on March 10, 2017, 05:26:17 PM
In the bushcraft thread some people talked about forging their own bush craft tools. I've always been interested in making my own tools. I've started this journey not long ago. I first built a small gas forge but soon learned I needed more.

So I built a bigger torch and then a bigger forge. Scored a peace of railroad track and made it in to an anvil like object.

Been doing a ton of research and practicing what I've learned. Getting closer to my goals of making all my own tools. Assembling the tools needed as I can

Will have some hammers and drifts finished this weekend I hope. Made several chisels and drifts, spring fuller, hold fast, and hot cut this week too. Every thing has been repurposed steel.

Some good skills to have.  Custom 'rustic' items like door handles/cabinet handles sometimes have good sale opportunities.  If you weren't so far away I'd try to convince you that you need a half dozen sections of track for an ore cart.  :chuckle:

Are you planning to keep it real traditional or plan on going to techniques like pattern welding and Damascus?
Quench and tempering?

im using charcoal right now. Gets super hot fast but burns up a bit faster than coal from what I've heard. I know there is a guy in Spokane that's part of the nwba that sells forging coke

no plans for damascus yet but I have been hardening and tempering tools that won't see a lot of heat.  Blades are on the menu

Made a quick gambrel the other day. Had a huge ram on it few hours later. No Bending or flexing even with hard pulling and I didn't even heat treat. 1/2" bolt steel.

Just started back into the heat myself. Been planning to add it to the knifesmithing, but only just got to it this season. Having a ton of fun! Built a forge, scored a 100lb anvil, made a few knife billets, just made a fully forged knife yesterday out of a huge old lathe chisel! Going to have it at the Pheasants Forever banquet next week, along with about 5 others... depending what I can get gripped up by then.

Will try to bring some pics over...

Finishing up my 3rd set of tongs. These are wide flat bit jaws for holding 1/2"-5/8" square stock. They work great! Very pleased with the business end but I want to get my reins a bit cleaner.  Also wanted to share my air valve for the charcoal forge. 2" pipe and electrical junction box. Cut half the lip off the door and use just 1 screw. Works very well

my wife was out antique shopping and found this anvil and sent me a text (half joking, who needs more than one anvil right ?)  $ 50 for a 52 # anvil.  A really good buy !

originally it had a vice on one end, I have done a number of searches but have found little info on the anvil or the manufacture ?

Decided to switch it up. I like this setup way better than horizontal! Much more steel under the hammer, Small horn on the base and center web is a fuller.  Not sure what I'll do with the other side of the base just yet. I'll never use it horizontal again!

Ok so here is a few question for you guys in the know with steel. I know files can make great knives etc.

What about wrenches, hammers, circle saw blades, pruners etc? I see this stuff at auction all the time and goes super cheap so I am always thinking about grabbing it for when I dive into steel one day.
Title: Re: Black smithing
Post by: denali on April 07, 2017, 10:17:31 PM
I don't have a lot of experience carpsniper but i think that would be a great way to get started, the tools you mentioned would be high carbon alloys and can be forged into useful cutting  tool of your design.  As you gain more experience you could then order the specific stock for the right application.
Title: Re: Black smithing
Post by: carpsniperg2 on April 07, 2017, 10:21:50 PM
Yeah that's what I was thinking. Stuff goes cheap and before getting to the spendy metal, rail road spikes and old tools, mower blades etc.

I was looking at some shovels and I love ulu blades. So I might have to pick up some at the next auction
Title: Re: Black smithing
Post by: jasnt on April 10, 2017, 06:22:44 AM
Files are good knife steel. Spring steel can be very good as well
Title: Re: Black smithing
Post by: rainshadow1 on April 10, 2017, 09:46:37 AM
Great list to have! Thanks!

Lots of the big sawmill circular saws are not the same base steel as the teeth. Sometimes the teeth are even carbide. But the base steel is often 5160, which is a decent performer but can rust terribly easily.

I just made a Damascus blade with a Nicholson file and some 1080 from a disc blade... not dissimilar enough, but if welded up great. Going to make a larger pukko out of it, I'll post a pic...

This is the polished Damascus blade...

First forged damascus. Nicholson file and 1080 disc blade. 18 layers. No nickle so it didn't etch very distinct, so I polished it.

Does anyone want to buy this? I can build a custom for you with it, your design input. Or you can build it yourself.

Otherwise I have other plans for it... Limited time offer! I have 3 jobs going, then after those I'm going to make a Puukko out of it and keep it in the family!

LM blades would be good for lots, but not really knives, they're low carbon, they can't be too hard or they'll shatter.

Title: Re: Black smithing

Arts or crafts or steel equipment, fixtures, etc. Most things, just not stuff that needs to harden like tool and knife steel. That's why lawn mowers get dull so easy, they have to be soft or it'd be like a frag grenade going off anytime they hit a rock.

One of the jobs I held as a kid was a blacksmith. I built a small forge out of refractory brick and heated it with a propane weed burning torch. I drilled the jet a bit oversized so it was super rich. I welded a piece of stainless steel tubing that ended in the mixer cup and ran up the handle by the gas valve. I ran shop air to the tubing through a simple 1/4" needle valve. I had to get the forge warm and then I could start increasing air and fuel till I got to the point where I had 10 pieces of 7/8" 5150 about 24" into the forge. I had a 3x12" window to stuff into and it would have the bars from room temp to white hot in 10 minutes easily.

If I tried to come up on the air too soon it would put the flame out. It took about 5 minutes to get where I could throttle it up, but once hot....it was hot hot. We had a few other forges that were 4x10 feet in size that burned through several showerhead sized gas nozzles. The gas bill was nuts.

Well I decided I needed to expand my hobby of knife making from stone to steel to. I wont be forging from scrap for awhile. I will be working bar stock. I'm just about done with all my orders. I also got the stuff to do kydex for holsters and sheaths. So wish me luck. I wont get up and going probably tell fall because of hay and grain. I am going to get my forge built hopefully in the next few weeks.

I also got the stuff to do kydex for holsters and sheaths. So wish me luck. I wont get up and going probably tell fall because of hay and grain. I am going to get my forge built hopefully in the next few weeks.
awesome. Look forward to seeing you get started

I have it all built. Got to hook up my burner tomorrow at some point and get a test fire roaring in it :IBCOOL:

I'll post some pics in another thread, when I get a chance.

I contacted Steve at Incandescent-Iron, he doesn't have a class until Aug, so he gave me two names to check with and I'm chatting with David at Morgan-Jade.  His are $160 for an 8 hour day.  I also have a good friend who lives near me who has been doing this for a while and has agreed to teach me what he knows.  He's an old SERE instructor, so he likes to teach.  :)

Here is David's e-mail.  blacksmithdavidmji@gmail.com  I asked him for the Intro to Black Smithing class.  He does 2 to 3 days depending on what I want and what I need.  I told him I would not be able to start until after spring bear over in Idaho was done, I'm just too busy for the next 3 or 4 weeks.  He said not problem.  I'm headed down to the Tri-Cities tonight to buy a 140# Kohlswa anvil and a post vice.  :)  :)  :)

I have been a doing blacksmith work for about 30 years.  I don't do it full time any more but I still like to play in the fire.
I have a propane forge and a couple anvils, so if anyone is interested in making some basic stuff, or not so basic, let me know and you can come over and burn some steel.

Just let me know what you want to make and bring you're material and we can set something up.

I am in the process of buying a knife grinder, so currently I am not set up for knives but that will happen soon.

I live near Maple valley and have some time on the weekends till hunting season.

Well I took David's class at Morgan Jade iron works.
Took Daves beginers class sat.  First impression was good,  shop is well organized and clean.  It was easy to see he takes pride in his work.  It was me and one other guy  ,I was glad it wasn't crowded.

After some discussion on what I had done and what I wanted to learn we decided we would make some tools.  I have a slight obssesion with hammers so we set out to make a handed hammer punch, hardy dish for facing rounding hammers (hope that's the proper term), and a hardy cut off.

Hammer punch would be 5160 1 1/8" round. He explained how to figure out stock length for 2D tapers and 3D tapers. After deciding stock lenght he cut half a dozen peaces and fired up the ribbon burner.we then squared up our stock on the power hammer, measured and center punched the eyes.

We took turns running the punch and striking over a striking anvil. Once punched we began drifting the eyes with 2 drifts and drawing out the cheaks. Then back on the power hammer to draw out the punch.  Finished up over the papa Rhino and cleaned them up on a 2"x72belt grinder. Wow could that thing eat steel!

We made the hardy tools from some 2" truck axel.  Used the power hammer to take it down to 1" square. And upset in the hardy again on the striking anvil with both of use striking while walking around it.  Took turns striking and calling with the handled round die. Finished the hot cut on the power hammer.

Daves style of teaching worked very well for me imo.  He would show use how to do it while explaining the Whats and whys  then step back and let use work threw trial and error correcting only when we were starting to really head south.

It was a great experience for me. I felt like I learned quite abit and that we accomplished a lot in the 8 hours.  He also invited me back for a hammer in later next month

So I am scheduled to take a beginning blacksmithing class on 10th and 11th of June with John Huffstutter at Quailside Forge.  Pretty excited to take the class.

So the other night I'm watching Forged in Fire, "Fan Favorites" TV show, and low and behold the guy who won on the show is the same guy I bought my Anvil from.  Very cool!  It was David Roeder in Kennewick, WA.  I have some tongs and a hammer.  Still looking to get a couple more hammers in the 2 to 2.5 pound range and a forge.

That's cool, I saw that episode as well. Im still searching for a anvil. Out here they are so spendy in the Midwest they go for so much less. Our family friend is going back that and got a killer deal on one last trip he went out there. So I am hoping he can find me something good and haul it home. Yes it will need a spring if you don't want to move it by hand :chuckle:, the jaws open and close. From what I have read any spring steel can be used to make a replacement. If a guy wants to use one. I was just going to use it as is. I'm pretty sure they would not be to hard to make looking at the designs of them online but I did note that in the listing now.

Last weekend I attended the Understanding and History of Blacksmithing held at the Northwest Museum of Art in Spokane.

We spent time at the forge and watched a very interesting documentary titled The Devil’s Blacksmith, its about an hour long but I could not find the complete movie, here is what I did find - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHklYJ7XWqeM9vssHufS8_Q/videos

made a hot chisel a while back out of some H 10 and thought I would try it out, so I made a couple hot dog roasters for the camp fire.  I used some 1/4 x1/4 stainless steel and split the fork, added some twists and back twists in the stem and used some antler I had laying around for the handle.

not sure what stainless it is, just something had laying around.  I got some scrap rebar and made my wife a garden gate, then I had to make a spider to go with it.  the spider is made out of 2 spoons and some old spokes from my panhead.

two recent scores , a 6" reconditioned vice off of a WW2 ship and a mini anvil from my father-in-law.

My Father-in-law's heath is deteriorating rapidly, because of the uncertainty,  I will not be able to host H W hammer in at this time, I really want to do it but need some closure first.

I have a list of some very competent and skilled individuates that I intend to invite.. it should be a lot of fun ... will keep you posted

Well after trials and many errors I have finished my 7th set of tongs.  They hold very well and feel good in the hand tho I did make some mistakes. Got my V a little to one side and that caused plenty of issues getting them to line up so I ended up hammering them flat and trying to form them around 1/2" round.   The jaws don't look pretty but they do hold very well.  I learned a lot on these and think my next set will be much much better. I like this style. Slitting is much faster than drawing out! This started as 1"X5/16" flat bar.  I saw this demo on wcb"s YouTube Chanel

Stared on a handled slitter yesterday. Should speed up my tong making and stop me from burning my wrist. Head is from an old tire iron and handle is from an old grounding rod.

Got my post vice mounted last week
Also got started on my striking anvil. I was going to drift the hardy square but the rain last week kept me under cover so I modified a cold chisel and cut it square. Needs a bit of a touch up but it's coming along nice

Hammer is about 3lbs. Got a couple 4lb cut as well. This is unknown steel so it will not be heat treated. I will use them for striking hardened tools.  Just waiting on some O1 and h13 to make my drifts.  Got another set of tongs done (flat bit) but haven't taken a pic yet.

Neat stuff jasnt.  It seems like a fun hobby.  I am slowly gathering parts and pieces to get into the game.  First off I have to teach myself to weld.  Just picked up a little Lincoln 140C and am wiring up my garage for some 220 and a couple dedicated 110 circuits.

Has anyone used one of these portaband tables?:
 http://www.swagoffroad.com/SWAG-V40-Portaband-Table_p_63.html (http://www.swagoffroad.com/SWAG-V40-Portaband-Table_p_63.html)

I like the idea of just mounting my portaband to it rather than taking up more space with a dedicated band saw at this time.

For the last few years our immediate family has exchanged homemade gifts for Christmas. I made my daughter a purse hanger. (to hang purse off of bar or table)

Eight layer Damascus billet was made using 1095 and 15N20 steel.

I drilled about 1/3 of the way into billet to give it a rain drop or circular effect.  I used a butane torch to give it some color.
She loves turtles, I hope she likes it.

I got bored and decided to lite my forge and heat my shop last week.  Figured I would save some money on Christmas presents an make my own.

I started with a coil off a 69' chevy nova, cut off a chunk threw it in the forge and started pounding.I did a heat treat in oil, and tempered them in the oven,  A trip to home Depot for $5.00 worth of walnut and some epoxy.  Three knives for just under $12.00.

Got some work done today. Finished drifting my soft hammer. Fits the handles ok after a quick touch up with the rasp.

I finially finished the hot cut I made at class.

Started straighting some coil and decided to make some hot punches and a small fuller punch. Then figured I may as well make some punch tongs.   Radiused the edges on the bottom swage and made my first rivet with it. Also made the rivet for the tongs

Any use for I beam cutoffs? I've got a couple at work right now that they asked me to get rid of, if anyone has a use for them I can save them and figure out how to get em picked up later. Theyre eight inches wide between a foot and eighteen inches long. If nobody wants em I'll bury them.

As a professional farrier of 23 years I've made plenty of horseshoes, pritchels, and other tools. If you guys want to see some awesome metalworking you should check out the "world championships of black smithing" on YouTube. Tons of in depth videos concerning how to improve your smithing.

"WCB" holds lots of competitions all over the place. Several every year in the northwest.

In my opinion the best practice you can get in your forge is by making chain or gate hooks.

I've made plenty of shoes out of rebar or old rasps. I once made a pair of bullriding Spurs out of 000 plates. They were to neat to use so I hung em on the wall of the shop I made em in. They're still hanging up after 15+ years

Needed a better top tool to make the feathers so I cut some tie rod (4140ish)and made one.  It works well but needs sharpened often so I’m remaking it from O1

The h13 punch and drift are awesome!

Looks like your staying busy making cool stuff. I use to have a hatchet that a buddy made me similar to what you have there, it was pretty sweet.

after I made it I was thinking it’s very hatchet like and with a heat treat it would probably be a great little hatchet.  Would need thinned down some.  After I finish the O1 tool I’ll repurpose it for a trapping ax

Finished up the slitter in O1 and another set of tongs and did a smaller drift for my struck tools.   Picked up a bunch of square stock today and I need to get some steak flippers done. May do some dragon head flippers

Does anyone know of a place in eastern Washington that sells forging coke? I sold my propane forge a couple years ago and wanna start again. Got a brake drum, rebar, and a welder so I think that’ll be a fun build. Gonna use the rebar to make my Tongs too.

Or should I buy coke online?

I would love to build a bunch of medieval looking hinges and latches for my barn. Big ones! And lock bolts etc for doors and paddocks.

Love your steak hooks, I might need another one. I have one that a Smith did for me with a dragon on the handle that is also a bottle opener.

LOVE the bottle openers!!

I'm about four weeks away from having my shop built.  Once that happens I am going to start collecting my Blacksmithing tools, anvil and forge.  Can't wait to finally get back into it
