Dispatching Furbearers
« on: November 04, 2021, 10:38:17 AM »
Obviously a .22 to the head is the preferred, but are there any animals where a headshot isn't ideal, where it might bring down the price of the pelt?
Just a curiosity?

Is it legal to use a pellet rifle for dispatching furbearers?

Dispatch threads have been a real sensitive topic, and best kept out of social media.

Yes,

Larger animals a .22 to the head is humane and does no damage. Some places such as no shooting zones you cannot use this method. There are also some animals such as mink, skunks, muskrats that shooting an animal typically causes too much damage. In both cases the recommended method of dispatch is gassing with CO2.
You need a tub with lid large enough to contain the trap and a Cannister of CO2 available at a welding supply. CO2 is heavier then air so you fill the tub with CO2 displacing the air. Odorless and colorless the animal continues to breath until it passes out. Some mixing with air may occur so usually you have to overfill a little.
Of course none of this is neccesary when using lethal traps which are commonly used on smaller animals.

Really? Seriously? I suppose… wonder where people think all that burger and taco meat comes from?
I have been out of the ‘fur trade’ since the 70’s when a large premium winter Yote got me $60. Most I ever got for a critter.
Any showing of blood on and in hunting mags became an issue way back too, and they stopped doing it. Only ‘clean’ pics for the most part.
Ran across a very old hunting mag recently. Guy on the front page was bloody, critter was bloody. Reality!
Cuterebra are NOT cute!

Thank you.
I fell down a trapping "rabbit hole" on youtube last night and it led me to Alaska and BC lynx, wolverine, and wolf trapping/snaring, but they never show the actual "act" due to youtube policies.

My old science teacher told me he hooks PVC pipe to his tail pipe into a garbage bag with a hole in it for gas to escape the live trap in it. He said if he died he would want it to be like that so painless so that’s what he does.
