Musket caps?
« on: June 28, 2024, 03:28:44 PM »
Anybody have suggestion on the best musket cap? I have the 4 wing reenactment ones that seem to be ok, I had the german ones without the 4 wing, was wondering if there is anything better.. I was wondering about the german ones with the 4 wings, I believe it says 1081 on the lid?

I would be real careful using the reenactment ones. They don’t have a lot of umph behind them and I’ve seen several misfires due to this… A guy I know had three misfires on a giant whitetail during the late season, I gave him one of mine and it went right off (he ran into me after the fact.)

Those are what I used before I switched to 209 system. Never had an issue with them with loose powder.

I bought a bunch of Schutsen caps several months back.

I've been impressed with them.
Probably shot a little over 100 of them and they seem hot to me.

Skagit Arms in Burlington has the 1081 musket caps in stock, I saw quite a bunch of them today when I was there.

Yes, the German ones, RWS  No. 1081 are all I have ever used and most people will tell you they are the only reliable musket caps for hunting purposes. Of course finding them can be a little more difficult, I usually get them from Muzzleloader Supply in Puyallup.

I hunted for RWS for a long time, and couldn't find any.

I finally found some Schutsen musket caps.   I've been very happy with them.    About 120 shots down range with them the last 6 months, and no issues at all.

I've had issues with CCI and Remington caps......   I'll never use  them again.

If you can't find RWS, consider Schutsen.

I'm not trying to sell more of my stock (I sold a bunch on here earlier), but if anyone wants to try them, I'll give you 20 if you can pick them up in the Auburn/Federal Way/Kent area.
