Got Beagles?
« on: November 21, 2024, 10:48:30 AM »
Just putting out the feelers for a female Beagle pup for pushing rabbits.  When I've posted on some Beagle facebook sites, I get the "How can you possible live with yourself? Forcing a young pup to chase rabbits for your own sick pleasure..." sort of messages.  Who knew I'd have to force a Beagle to chase a rabbit!  I'm in SW Washington State.  Thanks for reading.

Personally, I would head to Missouri or Arkansas and bring a pup back.  I haven't seen anyone chasing rabbits with beagles around here for years.  It sure is fun though!

Yes my son still has pups!   He even lives close by you. There's more hound hunters around than you might think, but they keep a low profile due to the animal rights folks harrassing.

They're 9 weeks old, only males, have all their puppy shots, and have been wormed.  The male was from NW Oregon and the female "Norma" is a product of his pack.

These dogs hunt, they're big, fast, hard charging and loud.  He hunts mostly Wa hare with them.

Message me for more informantion.

They look great, but I'm holding out for a female.  Really appreciate the lead. Thank you.

Well, shucks. No females, so who am I to turn down a young male pup priced right.  Due to the bargaining that goes on between spouses my Mrs. agreed to a male pup, knowing the marking that comes along with it, on the condition she gets to name him.  So, that's how I ended up with a beagle pup named "Wilbur".  My son's dog's named Melvin, so between the two it's only a matter of time before someone hears me calling "Wilber!" out in the woods and thinks I lot my Grandfather or Dad!  He's a great little guy, already sounding off on fresh bunny droppings. So as with all things hound and hunting, wish me luck in 2025.

Just an update for anyone following.
The new pup, hereby addressed as Wilbur was getting the hang of pushing rabbits at 4 months old.  Now at 5 months old, he's keeping up with our Jagdterrier cross.  Wilbur's excited bark sounds more like a dog screaming with excitement when the sent is fresh.  It's always great to get to work with a dog that has hunting in its DNA.  We should have many years ahead of us.

Great update! Never seen a beagle that was forced to run rabbits. The bawl they make is music to my ears. So much fun seeing and listening to them work a rabbit around.
I felt like a one legged cat trying to bury a terd on a frozen pond!

We had a beagle / Boston terrier mix.  She was just a house dog but she had the beagle scream-bark down pat!  And she ruled as alpha over the rest of our pack.

25-30 years ago lots of beagle handlers around our area(cowlitz, lewis county). I remember going to trials they had down at Castle rock and helping catch dogs before they got too close to the trailer park/road. Never had any of my own. but had fun running them with friends.

Too many folks these days . Couldn't imagine it.Would be front page news!....  :chuckle:
