Budget halibut reel?
« on: June 15, 2024, 06:22:23 PM »
I’m taking my girlfriend up to AK and gonna be bringing a boat south to WA, and figure since she’s never been up there, let alone fishing for the size of fish up there, I’d get her in on some halibut/ling action…

I fish an avet LX on a Shimano trevalla and love it, but I need to keep her setup a little more basic, no point sticking a newb on a lever drag

https://www.squidlures.com/store/p791/Mighty_Mite_4-Foot_Halibut_Rod.html

That’s the rod I got her.. it’s about the right size for her and she’s strong enough I should get some good laughs watching her with a 4 footer, it’s got the butt for a fighting belt which will help her out, and I think that’s a good fit for her, but I’m having trouble finding the right reel. I run 85lbs braid, sometimes 100lbs. I’m having trouble justifying a 200-300$ reel for a short trip, and don’t wanna invest the cash incase the rod goes overboard or something, but also don’t want junk that’s going to have the drag burn out after a few fish. I’m leaning towards a penn senator, just because that’s a time proven reel that can pack a ton of line, but the drag seems kind of weak on that for big bottom fish…

Thought I’d ask and see what suggestions y’all’s have

I have a Penn Senator 4/0 Special 113 H......also have two Daiwa Sealine 400H......and two Daiwa Sealine 50H reels. Plus a few awesome Fenwick saltwater rods which are stout enough to pull very large lingcod out of any rocky structure they can try and pull you into. These have not been used in the past 20 plus years.....since local halibut/lingcod captains provide the gear. Mostly loaded with old 40 lb. mono. All are in excellent shape. All of this will probably get sold at a garage sale later this summer.

If you have any interest, you can PM me here. I can meet and show them near the ferry terminal in Port Townsend. You can have your pick.

Might find an older Penn 309 around for $10. Put a power handle on it. Things have put piles of halibut on decks

Going to date myself here. I used a Penn Master Mariner 349 or a Garcia Mitchell 624. Both will be in yard sales this year.

I have an okuma cold water in the 400 series that I used for oversize sturgeon. It'd make a great butt/ling reel. They aren't stupid expensive and these have held up well. I'd probably sell one of the newer ones since I sold my boat, I have no real use for it any more.

Go on Ebay and pick up a old Peen 113H then get the handle reel for it.
