SB 5728, Another Commission changing Bill
« on: February 12, 2025, 10:32:03 PM »
This one is sponsored by Republican leadership so maybe has a little extra gravitas.
Not too bad sounding.

It has some good aspects, but I doubt there's much chance with the current legislative makeup.

I could get behind it. This looks like a great attempt to ensure a wide range of commissioner perspectives and help limit the influence of any one special interest group:

"The governor may only appoint commission members recommended by the commission nominating committee. The commission nominating committee must represent broad interests related to science-based fish and wildlife management in the state of Washington".

Additionally, I really like the qualifiers in sections E & F:

(e) Not hold another state, county, or municipal elective or appointive office, nor have a conflict of interest by receiving compensation, monetarily or otherwise, from any group, organization, association, or other entity for legal, lobbying, marketing, or other means that could reasonably bias a commissioner during rule-making proceedings; and

(f) Have purchased a valid hunting or fishing license in two of the most recent consecutive five years, unless they are members of a federally recognized Indian tribe.
