I’m gonna be visiting my lady in two weeks over in Cheney. I’d like to get out for some huntin while She’s at work but I’m not sure about where to go. Anyone have any suggestions on somewhere close I can go? Btw I’m not looking for guided hunts or anything like that.

Been out of the hunting game the last couple years as I have been concentrating on fishing and Kids Activities.  This year late muzzle opened up on my calendar.  I live In rainier so 667 and 666 are close.   What’s the tactic for hunting elk this late?   Are bulls still with Cows.  If anyone has any tip on a good area to check out that would be awesome.  I have some spots I seen some sign with my son out deer hunting.   Also if anyone needs a pretty green partner let me know.  I am always willing to learn.

I'm new to hunting and am reading everything I can get my hands on.  I'm wondering if it makes better sense to scout an area close by (about 1/2 hour) with greater hunting pressure but that I can scout regularly or to head further out (1-2 hours) but get much less scouting done.

I'm a bowhunter looking at early season.  I'm hoping that early archery will mitigate some of the hunting pressure.  All opinions welcome.

That's basically the situation I'm in - dad with young family, living on the wetside, wife who is patient but otherwise mystified by my new passion. Did archery the last two seasons.

So far, I've been scouting and hunting places within a 20-50 minute drive. It makes it easier to get out if a half-day opens up, and that lets me spend more time in the woods. On the other hand, well, I haven't shot anything yet either.

If I were you I'd be wherever offers you the chance to spend the absolute most time in the woods. Research is great but nothing can replace time in the field. Plus you may be surprised, many hunters have the same mentality of wanting to get away and sometimes the close spots get overlooked and might not be too terrible for hunting pressure.

Hopefully this post is still getting watched!
this is my second year hunting washington and the first im able to actually get out and scout/hunt! (lots of unfortunate events happened all in a row last year that prevented me from going)

Anywho, I live in Monroe and have tried scouting a few roads along hwy 2 but the ones that arent full of houses or have tons of campgrounds don't have any areas where I could park and hike in a ways (all cliffs). where should I be looking to next? google maps hasn't been too helpful in figuring out where I should go, I'd prefer to not drive out to the east side if I can help it, should I be going north/east/northeast of Darrington ish area, further up to mt baker national forest area? or more south closer to I90? any advice would be much appreciated!
I currently have a bear and cougar tag, I'll be getting a muzzleloader deer tag soon too

I dont know 556, but look for areas with blackberry bushes, ferns, and salal. Find the scat. Walk around a bunch youll find some rubs in there somewhere. Buy a couple of those 30 dollar tasco trail cameras and set them up on sunday and go back friday and see whats on them. Check the harvest reports on wdfw website for deer and bear. Tell u what youre up against. If you find some good berry patches up high you should be able to get a bear. If i did it anyone can.

When you google it, hit the "images" instead of "all".

So I'm assuming it's that specific plant the bears like? Or just that type of thick wet low to ground coverage in general....etc?

Im not sure bears like it, the berries are pretty bland in my opinion. Its just one of the plants I see a lot in areas blacktail seem to favor. In the fall bears seem to like huckleberries, apples, and acorns. Chokecherries early. Im no expert just what ive figured out so far. Read some of the older posts on here. You can get some good information that way.

My son and I can shoot any deer in in unit 124 late hunt. Is there a good place to go on public land or any where else? Thank-You so much.  We are staying in Colville and I have hunted Colville for over 45 years but never down in 124. Thanks!  Randy

So I am going to post this here and in the out a state thread. Of course I’m new to Washington. With what experience I have here I know it’s hard to find elk on the west side. I have not been out wandering on the east side yet. More and more posts and threads I read people are suggesting Going out of state. I too am considering Idaho, it close. Doing this alone would be tough though. As I am not a experience back country guy. I guess I need to research the harvest numbers as to where I want to spend my money and time this coming sept. So this question, does one spend this coming year planning prepping and scouting to hunt the East side. Or spend the time scouting a spot in Idaho when possible?
