My First Archery Buck
« on: September 01, 2008, 09:55:55 PM »
The short version:  At 8:30am I shot a very fat forked horn blacktail.

The longer version:  To get to my hunting spot I had to take a ferry and to get there in time I had to get up at 4:45am and drive to the ferry terminal to catch a 6:00 am ferry that got my to my hunting area at 7:30 am.  After checking a few different areas that often hold deer and and finding only young does and fawns, I deceided to still hunt a trail around a large pond after getting most of the way around it, I came around a corner and there was a large-bodied(for the area that I was hunting) forked horn thrashing the brush with his antlers.  When he stuck his head into a bush I drew back and after about 30 seconds he turned broadside, I judged the range to be 25 yards and sent an arrow through both of his lungs.  After waiting for about 10 minutes, I started to look for him but for the life of me could not find the blood trail finally after about an hour I picked up the blood trail and after that it was easy to find him.  The fun part was dragging him out over several chest high logs that there was no way around.  Talk about exausting!  I was able to get him to a road were I could pick him up in my jeep from there it is history.  Dressed out he was about 110 pounds.  The funniest part is the fact that last year I missed this exact same deer but this year I got him for good.

Here are a few pictures.

Notice the right antler is deformed from a fight he had while he was in velvet.

I cooked up the tenderloin for a victory meal.  Now that was some good tasting meat!
