North facing slopes?
« on: July 18, 2013, 01:11:16 AM »
When people are talking about Elk bedding in north facing slopes.... What does that mean?
Does it mean the side where the slope is going UP toward north? Or is it the other way around... Just trying to determine what side of a Hill would be what defines "north facing slopes"

The face of a mt side will face to the north...just look at aerial photo of a ridge one side will be more arid and open and sometimes just bare and the "north" side will be heavily timbered

In the shadow of the sun at noon. When you're on the north face and YOU are facing north, the sun is behind you and so is the summit. On a map oriented where north is up, the north face of a mountain is north of the summit. Yes?

Take I-90 for instance through Snoqualmie pass, the mountains on the south side face north, and the mountains on the north side face south. Facing south means they get more sun exposure than the north since the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. The sun hits the southern facing slopes while the northern facing slopes are usually shaded by their peaks due to the angle of the sun throughout the day.

Granted, during the summer months the sun will hit some northern facing slopes. ???

I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.

Ok all I was wondering, Was watching some videos on and a guy was trying to explain it and made it absolutely confusing as to he made it look like going up a hill facing north, was the north "facing" slope, so Its the opposite site, to where north would have a full view persay. Sorry for my ignorance, just trying to get some of the terms down.

I'm pretty sure he left out the word and.  It should read like this...

If you're standing on a slope looking down hill and you're facing north.

Note I changed your to you're, and put down hill vice just down, but it makes sense, give him a break.  I've been known to eff up on a keyboard my own self.
