Duck Choke!

Hello fellow Duck hunters,  i wanted to know if you all recommed any chokes to use.  I currently shoot a remington 870 , stock choke.  i was looking into modified or full... what are you thought and suggestions.

Both!  Depending on how your deeks are set up, what the area is like and if geese are on the menu.  If you have Heavyshot I'd even look at Imp when wind is at your back and the deeks are close. 

I'm assuming these are steel or heavyshot chokes you are looking at.

The new pattern master anaconda is a sweet little extended choke for a reasonable price like $50 I think, and patterns nice! I run mainly a regular extended range pattern master for ducks and geese, ever sense I used it I was basically hooked but that one goes About 100$. What shot are you looking to use?

geese are a sometimes more, ducks than anything.... we might get a brant sometimes...  I use 3" and 3 1/2

Another one I'll throw in the pot is Wad Wizard (wad stripping like a pattern master) as well as their conventional choke line, the SRM Terror. I have a  Terror on my 10 Gauge BPS that is the tightest they make. Actual inside diameter is about the same as their modified 12 gauge choke. Some serious range with black cloud and that choke.

For ducks over decoys I'm a huge fan of an Briley extended light mod, for primarily geese I like Briley extended Improved Mod.

As an all around I too use a Patternmaster. With any of the was stripping tyoe choke you need to make sure the shells use a standard wad. Any wads that use "reverse wings" or the like to slow them once they leave the barrel will hang on the studs in the choke and blow patterns to hell.

Also avoid chokes labeled for specific loads like black cloud etc. They are rarely anything but a standard choke with coating and thus a marketing gimmick.

any reason why you prefer extended?

I can't stand them, they vibrate loose after few shots and get worse if you don't remember to tighten them.

Mine doesn't come out I forget what brand it is.

I like a full choke because it really knocks the duck down........or the typical complete miss

I, like a lot of folks that hunt with a modern pump gun- have several chokes for it. They tell you that steel shot tends to pattern about one choke tighter than lead out of the same choke- meaning imp cyl will pattern about like lead in a Mod. choke, and a mod will pattern about like lead in a full choke- thats what they say.. Ideally do what i have done and get out where you can shoot a piece of cardboard at 30, 40 yd, etc.. with the steel waterfowl load of your choice. Every gun is different. I have used full- but when the birds are suddenly fast and close I miss more. knowing how my gun patterns- I would feel OK leaving the IMP CYL choke in the gun for ducks over decoys, but anymore, after a bit of patterning and experimenting- I just leave the factory MOD tube in the gun. It's been a decent balance, and it works.

Thanks, Last year i did farley well, but i missed some shots that i couldn;t make with my stock choke, i used my buddies modified and dropped every single bird, but he moved not sure what choke he used.
