Hound as a pet question?
« on: December 23, 2013, 07:08:48 PM »
Before I get to the question, I think it's important to give a little background of myself. I've been around retrievers my whole life. I own copperwood kennels and make my living retriever training. So I have a pretty good understanding of dogs and training.

My question is, how are hounds as pure house pets? I'm thinking of getting a walker or redbone and I wanted some advise from people that have owned one. The dog will never hunt, just hangout on my porch and play with the kids.

Any help would be great. Thanks a lot

They are great family dogs, but not capeable of just sitting on the porch.  You'll need a kennel or a heck of alot of room for a dog to roam.  Miles.  Hounds want to follow thier nose.

Hounds are great with kids, but won't just stay around the house they will want to run and chase.

They make great house dogs, really friendly, and excellent with kids. However, you probably will not be able to turn the dog loose outside as the hunting instincts may kick in and the dog will go roaming. If you have a fenced yard then no problem.

if you get a hound from some one that tried hunting the dog and didnt work out for hunting, that might work out... but i wouldnt waste a good dog with natural drive to hunt. i have had dogs in the house from time to time, the are hunters first, and thats just how most of them are. but great with kids and people.

At one time one of my buddies had a neighbor who owned a blue tick hound. Great dog, was very friendly, but it did what a hound did, bark his fool head off. My buddy, being a hunter, did not mind and the neighbor had the dog in the house at night, so it worked out. If you have close neighbors who don't understand dogs, then might watch out, but since you own a kennel it sounds like you already have that covered.

My hounds are quiet, you just have to not let them get away with barking.

I've had Beagles as house pets and working dogs for 50 years. Beagles are great w/kids, smart, and die hard hunters. They make excellent pets as well as hunters!

Hounds and Pointers have something in common, I haven't met one that I didn't like. Every one I've ever run into was loyal and friendly to a fault. But as others have stated, they live to hunt and they will roam.

Personally I love Plott hounds.

Personally I love Plott hounds.
There are three reasons every houndsman should own a Plott hound.

1) You can blame all your trash races on it.

2) It makes you realize how much you like your other dogs.

3) When you go hunting with your buddy that runs all Plotts, you will have one dog that doesn't get stretched in the box.

 :chuckle:

That said I keep a plott as my house dog. He was my first hound and after years of working with him I gave up on him hunting (plotts usually make good bear dogs though). All my hounds I have raised from a pup are house broke and come inside on occasion. They are great family dogs, but they can drive you nuts if they are used to hunting and are locked up for awhile. Just have a bark collar and regular training shock collar and you should have no problems. What made you want a hound and why a walker or redbone?

Mine just don't hunt bunnies; I've shot HUNDREDS OF PHEASANTS over my present two dogs.
