Looking at bows today
« on: April 05, 2014, 07:12:30 AM »
Going to look at a hoyt alphamax and a Mathews q2 today. Both owners are interested in trading for a Remington 870 I have. I'm new to archery. Anything specific I should look for as far as wear and tear? Thanks for any help you can offer

Nothing wrong with the q2 but it won't compare to that newer Hoyt. Those XT limbs on that alphamax are one of the best, toughest limbs hoyts ever made, and that's saying something. One of hoyts best bows. Just in case though run your fingers along the edges of the limbs looking for burrs or splinters. Look around the holes the cam axles go through and look for any stress cracks. Look for dents in the cam tracks, those will cause string damage. Draw it (with an arrow nocked) and feel for grinding or cracking. Check the serving (the small string that wraps around the actual bowstring) on the string around the cams, make sure it's not coming apart excessively and fraying the string underneath. Strings are easily replaceable though. That alphamax is a tough bow, I wouldn't be too worried.

A bare Q2 isnt worth much............and dated accessories arent either.  I shoot Mathews, but in this trade, Id be about the Hoyt.

Make sure you know what your draw length is and buy a bow that fit you.

2X on this. I dont know how many times ive had people get a used bow that doesnt fit them and cant be adjusted to them. Be sure to look into how the draw lenght adjust and if you can even get the cam or module you need :twocents:

Ended up getting the q2. The hoyt owner didn't want to trade and I don't have the money so I got the next best I could
