GSP Help (Jinxs)
« on: December 22, 2008, 05:09:07 PM »
New to site looking for a little help please. I got a 2yr old GSP. Wanted to take her out hunting but last two years been on road with work. Never had chance to really take her out. She does most command pretty good.
Was wondering if she is to old in her ways for me to take her out in field.
If she is not to set her heways, I am also looking for a few tips to fine tune her if that is possable.
Thanks for any help
Mike/Jinxs

If she's got some prey drive it will come out with some exposure to game.  Take your time and be patient, get her out on some birds and I bet a good nose full will get the light flickering if not burning brite.  Good looking dog by the way.  ;)

As long as you have laid the obedience groundwork the field work should come naturally no matter how old the hunting dog. Good luck

I see your in Port Orchard, Im located in Bremerton, I would just put her on Pigeons check out her nose and see if she will hold a bird instead of flash pointing it. There are some spots around this area to put your dog on birds wild quail that is. Well if you need any help with your pup just reply back at me we could get together and put her on some birds. Good Luck

Mjgentile and merlo105, I live in Olalla and was just given a 3 yr old gsp last week that I will be working on training. She has only grouse hunted and definitely needs work. I raise homing pigeons as well as gamebirds so if you would like to train together or give it a try I would be interested. The dog I got is still getting to know us but she hunts everything so I figure with birds, birds, some guidance and more birds I will have a dog for next season. PM me if you would like to give it a go. I would also like to know where there may really be some wild quail around here. I know there was when I was a kid but havenot seen any in a few years.

merlo105 and birdguy it would be great together,
Jinx does ok when I put some scent on a wad on end of fishing line and she point when she sees rabbit on otherside of fence. The only real problem I have is that I need to run her a while before I do any work with her.
I have my kids run her around the block a few time with there bikes, that seems to settle her down a little.
