I haven't used wool for years and haven't missed it once. Microfiber and hollow fiber technology, different layering strategies, lighter fibers - I can't see the need for wool with the possible exception of gloves and hats.

It does need to be cold or else I get hot in wool, but otherwise it's the best.

Pianoman - in my opinion nothing comes close to it in: a) scent, it's just really hard to get wool stinky, unlike synthetics b) insulates when wet, I often will forego raingear and just wear the wool, it stays comfortable and warm c) quiet, lots of fabrics equally quiet but they don't come close in the previous two departments. I read about lots of guys, particularly when bowhunting, who struggle to find quiet raingear. Unless it's really raining super hard, you'll do just fine with nothing on but some good layers of wool. If a sustained hard rain comes on I'll throw on something on top, but for drizzly conditions I love it.

I hope this thread helps you, as we always wonder if we need the latest and greatest, I think there are some great responses on here to your question that should help shed some lite. I have a good buddy who used to live by me that moved to spokane and has a set of top notch filson camo that stuff is Bad!!! Good luck

Yep OG-108 US military issue wool pants and shirts same two sets from the early 70s. One of the pants have a DOD manufacture date from 1952 buttons have been replaced about a dozen times but still in good shape. I did stop using the wool LJs with the draw string front with I got some Under Armor compression cold gear.  :chuckle:

I just got a free set of king of the mountain wool but not sure if I want to take it out of the house, I'd hate to get mugged at 4000' then freeze to death.

I keep telling myself that I am going to get some of the new high tech clothing but everytime I come home there is wool in the bag. Can't beat it for moving through thick brush and in the rain.

It's not traditional but I wear first lite merino wool. The Kanab pants are the most comfortable and versatile pair of pants I've ever worn. From early season archery hunting to layered up in the late season. I highly recommend them.

I do depending on the season, but it rarely gets cold enough to break out wool.  I like the light weight wool pants and a codet shirt for deer or grouse when I'm not moving fast.  Before I hunted with a camp, I kept some dry wool clothes in my day pack in case I got an unexpected overnighter.

Hey Fuzz, it seems like it all boils down to YOUR prefrence. I'm with you on the old school though, it's hard to beat the relialable performance of natural wool! And Blindluck, how did you stumble into a FREE set of King of The Mountain gear? What size are you and do you need a new huntin partner?

No, mostly.

My Filson cruisers and pants are boxed.

*Merino wool bases (light, med., heavy) on skin depending on forecast.
*Insulation layer/s light weight synthetics ("traditional wool" Filson Jac-shirt and/or vest are still used at times).  My jac-shirt is usually kept in my pack as an emergency backup.
*Outer shell.  GoreTex, Event, Q-Dry.

Adjustments to what I wear are done to keep sweating to a minimum.

Wool hats and gloves are still used if wet or cold.  Lightweight leather gloves if not.

I have found the above setup to be the most flexible in keeping me warm and dry and motivation levels up for extended pack hunts to stay focused on why I'm there.
