I'm kinda going through the same thing right now.  I can't decide between a 22-250 or a .243. Savage or Remington.  All I know for sure is I want a 26" heavy barrel and synthetic stock.  If I had to chose between the .204 and .243, I would take the .243.

I think it depends on what you plan to shoot. For squirrels I would recommend a .204 since the recoil is almost non-existent and you can enjoy watching them blow up. It's really fun. For GP (General Purpose) anything small game I seem to like .223 since I have two of them...

your obviously using this gun for a varmint rifle so i would go with a 22-250 they are smoking fast, very flat shooting and you won't have to worry about drift as much.  But I have to admit I have an AR that I use for coyotes and I have been curious about that .204

I wasn't saying squirrels weren't varmints, I was writing my post as you posted.  Your always quick with the smart ass comments I've noticed.  I like that though I think we'd get along.

Im having the same problems.  I cant decide between the .243/25.06 and .204/22.250... Decisions decisions huh?

.240 or larger
1-Can hunt deer/big game
2-Can shoot yotes and varmints
3- A little big if you save the pelts
4-distance in wind better accuracy as a little heavier bullet
5-little more versatile as far as small game/big game/varmint I have other firearms for big game
6-.243 loads readily available (I reload so it doesnt matter all thatmuch to me though)
7-ammo cost for 243 is reasonable.

Less than .240
1-little recoil
2-No big game- No bears if one comes to a stand, or deer, or elk. (I believe you have to have a big game to varmint hunt during big game seasons).
3-still shoot cougars with .22 centerfire or larger
4-no recoil to amount to anything
5-less pelt damage
6-Not sure about ammo cost for factory ammo in 22.250 or .204

I am still one way or the other.  Id go buy 5 or 6 guns at once be done with it if I had the money to do so at this time.  Right now one at a time though.

I think I am heading toward the .243  Soemone said that 243 erodes the throat fast, like 4 thousand rounds.  My 300 weatherby does too, but I can put 5 shots in a quarter pretty easily with it as poor as my shooting techniques are.  Ill wear it out and get another one.

22-250 is my go to gun, too bad I sold it. Good cause though, it bought my daughter her first bow so she can bow hunt with me. I had to decide between her .243 or my 22-250, didn't have the heart to sell her first deer gun (1 doe). I will be looking for another one soon, but will elect not to get the heavy barrel, I just can't see the sense in packing all the extra weight. As I get older cold feels colder, hot feels hotter, and *censored* gets heavier, but worst of all time gets shorter.

I would go for a .22-250 for a bolt gun but if you where looking at an ar .223. I have you looked at a weatherby I know they have ad's for $399 weatherby's and they are the same action as a howa. :twocents:
