Aerial gunning reduces Wyoming wolf pack that killed cattle

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) - Wildlife managers have killed five wolves from a large pack that had been killing yearling cattle in western Wyoming.

The Dell Creek Pack numbered as many as 16 animals and repeatedly killed cows grazing on private ranchland in the Hoback River Basin southeast of Jackson this winter.

The Jackson Hole News & Guide reports (http://bit.ly/1QXCkGI ) that gunning from a helicopter has in recent weeks trimmed the pack down to 11 members.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Northern Rocky Mountain Wolf Coordinator Mike Jimenez says that Dell Creek Pack hadn't started killing livestock until this winter.

Jimenez says large packs can be problematic because they need more food and can kill larger prey.

I am surprised they did not opt for whole pack removal.  Once pack 'culture' incorporates livestock depredation, they are unlikely to stop, even if members are removed from the pack.

In the western half of Washinton the WDFW rule is to wait till 4 animals have been killed of one owner plus he has to have been using all of the deterrents available and only then will they even consider killing one single wolf.
Is there anybody in their right mind think any livestock owner is going to watch his herd get killed and do nothing?  In fact there a very few will even notify WDFW anymore of livestock killed.  They know how to fix it themselves.
