Alaska shed hunting?
« on: May 12, 2016, 10:56:10 AM »
Planning a trip to Alaska within the next couple years and was thinking about hiring a pilot to fly out and look for moose or maybe even Caribou shed antlers for a day. Anyone that goes up there know of any pilots to talk to or if it'd even be worth it? Seen a video in the past of guys flying around spotting antlers from the plane and then landing and getting them. Looked like it could be a fun adventure.

When I did a float hunt a couple years ago I found tons of moose sheds and a carbou shed. That would be a pretty expensive shed hunt though if you're flying out. That's gonna be a $2k bush flight minimum round trip even for a short ride.

My buddy that lives up there in Anchorage was telling me that its a pretty popular thing to look for sheds out of a plane. I found a ton of sheds on my float trip in the Brooks Range.

So maybe a float trip might be the better thing to do? What's it take to do one?

Well I floated out to the Beaufort sea on the Kongukut river. Renting a raft, satellite phone, flight out and back was around $3500 a person. Was out 10 days, did lots of hiking, fishing(got tired of catching fish), and sight seeing. I will be doing it again

Yeah that wouldn't work to well with the time ill have for this trip. Ill only get 1-3 days time to do something like this and the rest of my time up there for other things.

Well you might look at calling one of the airlines where you are going and see what they have to say.

When I say "tons" of sheds I found, I mean about ten or so sheds over the course of 100 miles on a river. I don't think that would be considered a good haul of somebody was looking for just sheds.

Tagging. I was about to ask a similar question. it would be tons of fun to do it from a plane and be able to find the big herds but the price would be pretty steep just looking for sheds. I need a friend with a plane   :chuckle:

We found quite a few Caribou sheds and one small moose shed while hunting Moose out of King Salmon but flying to look for sheds would be expensive.

Talked to a pilot that said he'd charge $300 an hour of flying. How many hours does it take to get to good shed country? Lol

Years ago a local from King Salmon told us they found 2 huge moose dead that were locked together so they landed and took quads out to get them.
