Shooting in mason/kitsap counties

Hey guys, I moved from the peninsula to gig harbor several years ago, one thing I miss, is not having to drive 2 hours to shoot, instead of going to clubs. My question is, is there any areas in mason or kitsap where I can just shoot? I would love for 200 yards but I'll take what I can get! There's got to be something by belfair....

Powerlines between SunnySlope Rd and Lake Flora Rd, and also within about 1000 yds of sunnyslope rd on the other side of sunnyslope.(It becomes private property eventually back there).  This area is part of Kitsap County Coulter Creek Heritage park.  Currently the park is "undeveloped".  Signs are posted at the gates at each road with "park rules".  They don't say no shooting.  Lots of people have been shooting there recently.  The main spot is off of Lake Flora Rd, walk in about 1/8 mile and you come over a hill and there is a valley back there.  Main shooting spot is about 100 yds down the back side of the hill.  Shooting down into the valley there is opportunity for 800+yd shooting.  Just make sure you have a good backstop. 

It's not posted "no shooting".....(yet).  Quite a few people leaving trash out there so I'm sure it will get shut down at some point.  People also tend to shoot off the tops of the yellow natural gas line markers. (STUPID).  The signs at the road went up about 3-6 months ago I think announcing it as coulter creek park land.  Since then I have seen a lot more people going for walks out there.  If you are shooting long range out there, take the time to make sure there aren't people in the area before you start lighting off.

As far as whether it's explicitly "OK" to shoot here....I'm not sure about that.  I just do know that many people have been shooting out here recently and as of this weekend, it's not posted "No shooting."  Some weekends it sounds like a war-zone out there with people doing ammo dumps at 2 or 3 spots at the same time.  Other weekends its pretty quiet.  I ride my motorbike through the area about once a week and pick up brass casings and trash that people leave behind.  As I like picking up brass, I hope fellow shooters respect the area and do their part to keep it open for as long as possible.

DO NOT shoot under the power lines off lk Flora Rd and or Sunnyslope Rd. County park property with county park rules. It was posted no shooting but all the signs where torn down. It will be re posted soon. Most people that have been shooting there are unresponsible slobs. The place is trashed, shooting at BPA power line towers, the list goes on.

Shooting at the BPA power lines will get you good relations with the FEDS. Maybe it will get rid of some of the so called "SLOBS" for a while

For the OP. Kitsap gov's website has a no shooting zone map. Be aware this is based on property size, proximity to water and gov ownership. Land company's like Alpine, Menke, Pope Resources and DNR prohibit target shooting that does not show on this map. Most of their property is posted but its not required. You are responsible for knowing who's land you are on. Your options are very limited in both Kitsap and Mason. I know the forester for Pope and he is fed up with the target shooting on their land. Trashing the land, killing trees, driving around gates etc. Anyone he finds on their land target shooting he is having trespassed. Your best bet is a gun range or back over to the great less populated Oly Pen.

Thanks for the further insight fishngamereaper.  I didn't know the specifics and legalities for this location.  My parents live just down the road and we hear people shooting out there all the time.  Although right now it seems that everyone is doing just fine walking in, shooting, and walking out.  I WOULD NOT want to be there when feds show up and be associated with the vandalism out there.  I didn't know it was on their radar and destined to be shut down soon.

short answer in Kitsap is not really any areas. Also ranges are short (gig h and silverdale) but there is pay to shoot times at Silverdale range last I knew, skeet/trap shooting at brem airport too. You will most likely have to travel to find suitable areas to plink otherwise big brother will help you out of some green in that wallet.... not sure what its like across the hood canal bridge out in the Sandy Shore area. someone may be able to help with rules for there...

I don't think they allow target shooting around the pope Sandy Shore areas or Tarboo Lake (like that stops it, though).  I used to go to a few gravel pits off 104 a couple miles past SS turn off or go up some of the forest rds between Quilcene and Brinnon, but a few have washed out.

Just move to eastern washington , then you can shoot any public land you like.That sounds like a royal pain in the rear.

Sounds like I'm out of luck! I guess I'll just keep making the drive... It used to be so convienent to go out and test 10 bullets at a time, I guess that's what I get for moving to a town with a gas station lol. I appreciate the onsite guys!
