Last minute hunting tips
« on: October 10, 2007, 02:03:57 AM »
If you've got a good tip, share it here.

80% of successful hunting is simply being there and being alert, so:
a) hunt from legal light until legal dark.
b) bring what you need to stay comfortable and mentally aware.

For me, this includes:
2 qts of Gatorade and enough food.
extra socks, a spare T-shirt and a warm sweater.
a flashlight I can hold in my mouth with spare batteries.
  a map and a compass.

Use your eyes. Look thru stuff. Do not expect to see a deer standing in the open, on a ridge, with the sky as a backdrop.

Slow down and hunt.

Use the wind to your advantage.

Slow down and hunt.

Use your binoculars.

Slow down and hunt.

Sight your rifle in before opening day, I hate opening morning and someone is blasting away (sighting in the gun) because they either missed a shot or procrastinated.

I'm also a fan of the headlamps now, they are more convenient than the flashlight in the mouth.

I don't need two rolls but making sure that you have some is a good idea. My old nickname "one sock" was for the very reason that I forgot to bring some.  :chuckle:

Be on top looking down and if you see a buck bedded don't be quick to shoot it.  More than likely there are bigger ones just out of view.  Take your time and glass the surrounding area.
