6.5 Creedmoor or 7mm-08
« on: December 09, 2017, 09:49:16 AM »
For some reason I feel the need to take on another caliber; kind of toying these 2 but can't decide.  I want something for deer with a bit more range and less kick than my .35 Whelen.  Any opinions?

Either will work.  I like the 6.5 to 600 yards.  Especially if you have a 24" barrel.

I own and reload for both.

That's a lot of barrel; I was thinking more like a 20".  Are longer barrels needed for the 6.5?

For a 20" barrel I really like the 7-08.  :twocents:

If you want to maximize velocities.  24 is optimal in my opinion.....though some would and will argue this.  I am pushing 2730 fps with 140 grain acccubond and accuracy is sub moa.  Consistent sub 1" groups at 300 yards.  24" barrel.  My friends 20" barrel is only producing 2350-2400 fps for his sweet spot on accuracy.

Great info here. Do you have or reload for a 20" 7-08 jrebel?  What are you seeing for that combo's sweet spot?

I do but I have not chrono'd the load.  It is my wife's gun so it is a light load for Max range of 200-250 yards.  I have another 7mm-08 I will be loading for Max loads / velocity with accuracy being the primary goal.  I will start a thread when I begin this project.

I think either are great, proven calibers. Choose the one that you desire and get after it.
