Bobcat?
« on: February 06, 2018, 06:22:43 PM »
What are your experiences using bobcat urine? How have you used it and what results have you had. I bought a bottle from one of the trapping supply companies. I transferred it to a spray bottle and was thinking about squirting a spray or two inside my cage traps. I was just curious to know if anyone has done this before and what were your results? I have sprayed some on the tree I've hung a beaver carcass from. I'm just Not sure if it has helped or hindered anything.

Do bobcats spray their cached food to claim it as their own?
It's not the size of the trophy that make's it a trophy.

No, bobcat urine is an attractant but cats spray to mark territory. It is used as a gland lure would be used or as a curiosity lure.
I have caught cats with urine but not in cages. I used it at prominent object along a trail, scent post type set.
I can see its use in a cage on some type of non-bait lure such as the furbees people use.

On another note there is a lot of controversy in the trapping community about the quality of urine both cat and K-9 urine. Some of it is watered and some is just plain fake. Really tough to tell what you are getting. Reliable sources are usually discovered through word of mouth and there is a limited supply of the good stuff so many are closed mouth about that. It is a given the good stuff is expensive.
I personally don't use it except occasionally because I don't know who to trust. I do save all the bladder urine from cats I catch though.

Well I guess we will see what happens. I didn't look at your responses before I decided to just go for it. I squirted a couple squirts into each trap. I probably should have left at least one without just to see if it makes a difference.

Real easy, cut the bladder out and put in jar. Then puncture with a knife= jar full of urine. A lot of my cats have empty bladders though. Seemed like when we used to use foot traps they were all full. Maybe because the check time.

Here's another one for you guys on cat turds. Unfortunately our house cat passed this last fall. While cleaning up all of his things I ended up saving the contents of his litter box. Would you use the old dryer or turds? The litter? Would you mix it with anything? Perhaps grind it all up with some glycerin? Should I just toss this old stuff and see if I can get my hands on some fresh turds/litter? Do you think scented litter would be an issue?

Only one way to find out. Put some out and see if it attracts anything.

I think I might just do that. Not catching anything now so why not try it in one of the traps. Anyone ever sprinkle any catnip in their cages?

Catnip and catnip oil are used in lure recipes for cats.

So I have a few more for you guys that prebait. First off how long will you check to see if a bait is being hit? The reason I ask is I have several that have been hanging for several weeks to a month or more that havent been hit yet. They look pretty nasty. Nothing has hit them yet so I'm thinking those sites are a bust. Also how close to your bait site will you set your trap? Right under the tree your bait was hanging? 30 ft away? On a trail close by but perhaps farther away? Do you wait till the bait is completely gone before you set a trap, or set a trap or two before it's gone? Do you leave the bait hanging while your trap is set, that is if you set before the bait is already gone? Or do you set your traps without bait and the doors wired open before you hang your bait so they are use to it being in the area?

I let my prebaits hang a week before checking them, then set traps at the one's that have been hit and continue checking the others while checking traps in that area.
Remove the prebait when hit and set your trap nearby.
I agree your bait that has been hanging a month is a bust.

 Good Luck.
