Calling elk early
« on: August 25, 2018, 05:11:19 PM »
Just a friendly reminder, do not call elk until season has started. When you call and they start coming in and see you or smell you that will educate them and by season they will know not to respond to you. I’ve seen 2 videos this year already and the people calling are standing in the open just looking at the elk and then the elk sees them.

I just got back from 4 days in eastern Oregon for their elk opener.  Wish I would have heard a bugle human or elk.  Still too dang early.

Yep I agree, I don’t even really like going into where I’m planning to hunt within about 3 weeks of the opener.

Now days calling is mostly a deterrent , they eather recognize the fakeness , get freaked out because your attracting preditors like a retarded critter , or they just shy away because of breaking the the silence to abruptly , these are not my words , they are the words or Wayne Charlton , champion elk caller ,these days all you should be doing is the lost calf call , this is what he told me in a face to face conversation 5 years ago , he said they have become silent critters for the most part , and blowing a bugle is just not beneficial any more 90% of the time , I've had my best day of bow hunting ever by using this advice , it worked perfectly ,cows come running and the bull follows , to say hey where do u think your going .Also , you shouldn't call at all unless there has been elk located nearby , and be very suital with the calls that are made because that's the way they are for the most part , it's all part of them adapting to to many woodsy soles in the hills all the time , and don't get me started on that !

Just because the elk have been educated does not mean you wont be able to call them in.  learn to call better and quit whining

I’m not whining at all. I’ve called elk in 2 years in a row. But there’s some people out there that will sit in their truck and bugle out the window with the truck on. Just use some common sense and wait till season.

Tuesday Tip of the Day: Crack the Busch Lite before you roll down the window.
Tuesday Tip Two: wet whistle with Busch Lite before attempting sunrise lip bawl.
Just tend your own and live.

I just slam the door, shock gobble..I mean bugle.
I then will blow my bugle tube as loud as possible and of course only play with the elk that want to play in return.

There is wisdom in Cryders words, though maybe a bit extreme, lol.   90% of you guys call too much, but keep doing it, because when I actually have trouble telling whether its real or not(usually not very often), its my next flag that its some dude.

and yes, shutting off the diesel and slamming the door prior to letting one rip is always fun entertainment.  I sometimes will answer just to keep things interesting and to keep the spirits up for some greenhorn.  They are sure to show up on here and report they are screaming.
