GMU 246 slide rock??????
« on: September 05, 2018, 03:38:58 PM »
Hey people looking to to get a little info on GMU 246 slide rock before I head out this weekend!!
Who has been out there? Is this a area worth packing into? This area reports pretty low Hunters compared to the  surrounding areas so hoping it’s a good place to get away from the  crowds. What do you guys find these deer eating on and at what elevation during the fall Time??

It’s Slide Ridge, not rock. The hunter numbers are lower than surrounding units because it is much smaller than surrounding units. Lots of fires in the area, access may be restricted, also super dry right now. Best of luck.

Steep and deep unit, which any area where the roads get you into it is either hunted pretty hard or is just a migration route for the mulies when the snow comes...most homes along the south shore of lake Chelan are either summer homes or anti-hunter residents, be aware of this as you will see deer driving along the south shore but almost all of the land is private and most people consider them pets. Once you get onto FS lands you will see that what isn't steep has burned in the past 20 years (several burns over time) which provides feed...tons of ceanophus (buck brush) so it's not like there are any certain slopes or feeding areas as the food is everywhere up there (great for wintering deer) but very little water in the summer due to it being so steep so there isn't many "resident" deer. That is why this unit is a good Quality Draw permit but you will see that WDFW gives out very few of these because there isn't as many deer in this unit as other units around it (Entiat, Chiwawa, Swakane, Clark). If your looking for a starting point for Slide Ridge I recommend going up to Jr. Point and hiking a few ridges out and you will see what I mean by steep but that is also the starting point for some backcountry bucks...also look to the Pyramid Mtn area...

Steep and deep is right. Not an easy unit to hunt but its trophy country.  Scouting would definitely be the key to success in slide ridge on a general deer tag.

dont listen to GRADE! no its just like he says it is. " very steep" lots of ridges to do spot and stock. if we get the early snows up high like the weather man is predicting could be good to find a basin and glass looking for those high muley's feeding . JR point is a good area also try walking in the devils backbone area or the pots peak trail. slide Ridge its self is vertical 3500 ft top to lake. its why its call slide ridge. trust him hes been down it.... also try big cabin area. trail to pyramid peak is always good and not to bad of a hike.

Um, I remember hobbling out the devils backbone trail on crutches to pack out a buck for someone on here...starts with heavy, ends with horned... :) And for Jslinger663, be sure to have a few spare tires along. The road can get a bit rocky and they eat up tires!

Slide Ridge (GMU 246) has some good high back country in the North Fork of the Entiat River and some on both sides of the ridge.  I am most familiar with the Entiat side.  Here is a photo of some bucks that spent the summer along Fourmile Ridge.  Most of the more mature bucks summer farther up valley in the Glacier Peak Wilderness.

It is already full of hunters or hikers so any of this information is old news.
