I'm curious  in  wa state do you have to take the meat ?
No. They are classified as a furbearer.
Incorrect.

Wildlife of any classification cannot be wasted. It's come up on this site several times that shooting a coyote and letting it lay is wastage. Now will an officer cite you, who knows. But by the law, yes it is wastage.

BigTex - What is the ruling/view on that if the meat is obviously bad upon getting to the down animal?  Case in point my ID bear last year.  We got on it as soon as possible, but it was completely obvious that the meat was no good and not something safe to consume?
I can appreciate not "wasting" the animal, but if the meat is not fit for consumption are we expected to still break it down and haul it out of the field only to throw it away?  Just seems an even bigger waste of the resource.  I would think it better for the ecosystem to take what is usable and leave the rest so that scavengers, etc can all get their piece of the pie as it were...

"When my bow falls, so shall the world. When me heart ceases to pump blood to my body, it will all come crashing down. As a hunter, we are bound by duty, nay, bound by our very soul to this world. When a hunter dies we feel it, we sense it, and the world trembles with sorrow. When I die, so shall the world, from the shock of loosing such a great part of ones soul." Ezekiel, Okeanos Hunter

this is a direct quote from their website.     https://wdfw.wa.gov/help/questions/83/What+is+the+definition+of+%22wastage%2C%22+and+when+does+it+apply%3F

"You may not allow game animals or game birds you have taken to be wasted recklessly.
You must make a reasonable attempt to remove and use all edible meat from the carcass of harvested game fish, game birds, and game animals."

If the meat is not edible, it is not wasting.  I read somewhere that certain animals were exempt from the waste laws, but I'll be damned if I can find it. On the list I recall bobcat, coyote and cougar being on the list of animals that were not required to take the meat. According to what I read in the game regs it doesn't mention that though.
