300 Win mag seating depth
« on: September 26, 2018, 09:25:14 AM »
I have Remington 700 long range 300 win mag.  I have about 500 rounds through it.  When I first got it, I tried using H-1000 but couldn't get any accuracy or consistency.  Switched to H-4831SC and kept going.  Well I want to try the H-1000, 212 ELD-X combo.  I checked the lands on my rifle with that bullet, and I found that my lands were 3.660.  My magazine length is right about 3.60.  So my lands are always going to be about 60 thou away.  Is that going to be a big deal for accuracy or Low SD's?  My throat has eroded a little bit, I used to be 3.660 with the 208 A-Max, but now it is 3.675.  I am going to shoot it tomorrow, and run it on the Magneto speed to see what I get.  Am I going to run into problems?

Anybody else have these distant lands from Remington?

I am shooting 215 bergers at 50 off the lands just fine. I’d guess with the Eld x you could do the same based on my experience with them in other calibers.

You could also add a Wyatt’s mag box to the rifle to seat longer too.  :twocents:

H1000 and heavys is a great combo in the winny

Last time I tried the h-1000 and 208's, it didn't work out so well, nothing smaller than 2" groups.  but that was about 400 rounds ago, and 3 years ago.  So well will see, I am doing the ladder test tomorrow from 76 to 78.5.  Are you compressed on those 215's?

No not compressed at all at 78 grains. My oal is very long tho at 3.75+

You will hit pressure before 78.5 grains. Depending on Brass I’d guess you will top out in the 77 grain range at That length

As was already mentioned, if you have an extended mag put in your rifle it'll open up your options.  It's not a very expensive mod and just about any gunsmith should be able to do the job for you.

I shoot 200gr ELDX with IMR4831 and 200gr AB’s with H4831 at .020 off lands. Shoots 1/2moa groups put to 550yds. This is a Remington Sendero .300 win mag.

I run 69 grains of h4831SC with my 200 NAB.  I’m moving about 2840 FPS and I used to be about .015 off lands, but now I am more like .030.

What charge are you guys running for 180's with H4831sc and what are you seeing for speeds? Lately I have been battling H1000 and groups are horrendous.

:yeah: they like the heavies, better grouping with the heavies regardless of powder brand.  :twocents:

What primers are you (the ones having problems with h1000) using?A couple of the shooters from this forum put me onto the fed 215's and my grouping closed with h1000.

I prefer speed with the .300 Win Mag when it comes to your average big game shots, point blank to 500 yards or so. RL-22 would be my first choice, IMR 7828 my second.

I am looking for speed, I have a load with h-4831 that is accurate, but I want some speed to go along with the 212’s, because it’s for hunting.
