Turnbull Youth Hunt
« on: July 16, 2019, 03:01:49 PM »
Hey Team,

I had a great meeting today with Turnbull refuge about a youth hunt this year. They seem to be on the fence, because we are only two months away, and planning may be short notice. I was  hoping to see if we had some huntWA folks here with youth under 16 that may want to participate. I want to see if I can come back at them with a general number of interested youth, that may sway them into saying "yes" for this year. Anyone interested?

Are you trying to make a new youth hunt in there? Or are you talking about the kids that drew??

It's only waterfowl so any draws won't be effected by this. Turnbull used to have a youth waterfowl hunt years ago and WWA Spokane is trying to get it up and running again.

I would be more than happy to mentor a youth out there.  I have decoys, calls and a dog but my daughter is still a few years away from hunting.

Thank you for volunteering! If we are approved this year, we'll have 7 blinds to manage. Two kids per blind. I will PM you once I get the green light.

Even if they say it's too late to do this year, we'll be planning next year for sure, so I'll keep you on my list.

Depending on travel and dates, I would be more than happy to help out and lend gear and a dog.

Thank you, Stein! The actual hunt would be September 28th all day. The weekend before will be a great educational summit for the kids. Calling, decoy placement, Duck ID, etc.

On another note, I'm also working on trying to secure a place for the second date: Feb 1st. That is the Youth/Vet hunt. Turnbull will not be a good location, but if I can find a farmer in the area that is in need of Geese removal services, we will happily oblige :)

Good news!!

Turnbull gave us the green light for the hunt this year. WWA-Spokane Leadership will be creating a flyer this week to promote the event. If we have more than 14 kids registering, Turnbull will handle a random drawing, and notify parents in August. The flyer will have instructions on how to register.

If you've identified yourself on this thread as an adult that is willing to mentor/retrieve, please email WWASpokane@gmail.com with your name and contact information.

A dog or non-motorized way of retrieval is acceptable. The Turnbull slough may be shallow in areas, but walking in waders to retrieve is "near impossible" they said. So bring your Kayaks or the likes :)

Great news!

Unfortunately the WWA banquet is the same night, so we have a decision to make.
