Cooper Rifles??
« on: August 23, 2019, 01:12:40 PM »
Anyone own one?  Good, Bad and Indifferent???

I am looking at one of their rifles with the proof research barrel.  Looks like an amazing rifle and everyone that owns a cooper seems to love it.  Just curious if anyone on here owns one and what they think.

The only thing I am not crazy about is the detatchable magazine....worried it may limit my OACL when loading.

Here is picture.

Great rifles.   Get a steel barrel.

Reason for steel over carbon wrap?  Other than personal preference is there a reason.

If its 700 foot print, just be sure it has action milled out extra long and a Wyatts xlong mag box.

I don't have the rifle in your picture, but I have a Cooper 92 Back Country in 6.5 x 284 and couldn't be any happier. I like the detachable mag on mine although mine is not extended. Shoots as advertised.

It looks like an ai pattern magazine. It’s easy to find max length options for those depending on magazine

I just wouldnt pay $4k for a Cooper when you can spend $2300 on a timberline or back country and get the same weight and performance.

I agree about the price and there is a premium for the carbon fibre.  With that said the LR series is the only series that come in a 26" barrel.  The non carbon fiber is cheaper but also weighs almost 10 lbs.  If I go with the 280 AI I will likely go with the Back Country or timberline.  If I go with the 28 nosler or 7mm..I am wanting the maximize the velocities with a 26" barrel.

I do agree the price is a little shocking.....but still less than a true custom.

Thanks for the review.  Sounds like everyone that has a cooper rifle loves them.

By who?  most custom rifles I have priced out and looked at are running 7K.  I don't have the time to build it...or expertise....so it has to built by someone else.

Get in contact with some gun builders. There’s lots around.

Action - 1500
Barrel - 800
Brake - 150
Trigger - 150
Stock - 600
Bottom metal - 250
That’s around 3500 in parts. I’d say 500-700 is a good going rate for assembling it all. These part estimates are on the high side and you could likely do better.

Have you actually talked to any builders? Or just looked online?

Yes but it has been a few years.  I know a few builders / gunsmiths, I will talk to them.  In more recent months I have found custom built rifle like Rbros, hells canyone, etc.....it appears $4500 ish is the starting point.  Definitely not apposed to a custom but have found that most of my non custom shoot equally as well.  I look at a cooper as a semi custom that can save me a few bucks.

I have also looked into bying another Christensen Ridgeline in 28 nosler.  After I finally found a load my 300 win mag liked, it shoots 1/2 moa.....it was just stupid finicy to load for.  I have heard Christensens are just that way.....some are great rifles and some no so much.  Not sure I want to gamble again.

I’ve got a Ridgeline in 6.5 prc.  It shoots very well with factory ammo.  Lot of rifle for the $$.
