I’m buying a 17 hornet and I’m wondering if anyone has one? Or any other .17 Centerfire for that matter? What have you shot with them? Accuracy? Please share experience and opinions

I've got a Savage B17 fv 17HMR and really like it.  It shoots Hornady VMax ok, and it LOVES the CCI TNT's.  Shoots them in 1 ragged hole at 100 yards if there's no wind.  The whistle pigs hate it.  :chuckle:

I have a two CZ 527 Varmint model 17 Hornets, they're a great little gun, lot of fun to shoot and they shoot pretty darn good with factory ammo right out of the box.  The feeding on the CZ 527 17 Hornets can sometimes be a little finicky but once you learn the tricks to cycling the bolt, mine feed perfectly fine.

I've had a Sav Bmag HBSS for a few years now and since getting my 17 WSM Bmag, my 17 HMR hardly ever gets shot.  The 17 WSM is definitely the king of the rimfires and only cost slightly more than the 17 HMR ammo.

They 17 Hornet isn't all that loud to begin with, but shooting these things suppressed, they are crazy quiet and soooo much fun to shoot ground squirrels with.

The 17 Hornet ammo definitely cost more than the rimfire ammo but it's reloadable or you can save your once fired brass and sell it to recoup some of your money.

I had a CZ 527 Varmint in 17 Rem for a brief period but even though they're a nice little gun, the 17 Rem just didn't do a lot for me and once you get to that size case, I much prefer the 20 cals better so I sold it.

Although a rimfire, I love my 17HMR. :dunno:

17 rem and a 17 fireball. Great on ground squirrrels, and works good on coyote when saving a pelt👍

I had a savage 17hmr before it got stolen years ago along with my truck. Gotta love Lewis county tweakers. Sorry still bitter almost 18 years later.
Anyways I lost a few coyotes as they left no blood trail and didn’t seem to drop them in their tracks. So I switched to head shots and it worked great. I think I would go with one of the center fires or something with just a little bit more than the 17 HMR. I did like the gun but I have never bought another one.

Probably my very favorite is my .17 fireball. For coyotes, my favorite is .17-.204. I use 20’s-30grainers in the fireball and only 30gr in the .17-.204.

Check the ruger 17 hornet, full size, great on ground squirrels, collared doves and coyotes.  Nothing past 200 yards yet, might make it to 300 before that little pill dances.  The little 15.5 bullet sure takes care of ground squirrels, mulch comes to mind.
The ruger might need a little twinking, trigger, bolt shims and such but shoots great.  A pound of powder goes a very long ways.

I have a .17 Ackley Hornet that Kimber had as a factory chambering back in the mid-80's.  Not an easy cartridge to handload stick powders for.  Be careful when switching brands of brass as the different wall thicknesses can take a safe loading to an over pressure one just like that.  I used some SAKO brass and it was thicker than Rem or WW brass that I was loading at the time.

jdb, what will you be using a 17 Hornet for?

For what it's worth, I personally think they're a little light in the arse for coyote sized critters and unless you are keeping your shots fairly close and you are spot on with your hits, IMO there are much better choices.  But, if you are looking for a fun little gun to shoot that isn't all that loud and has next to no recoil and you'll maybe use it on a coyote if one happened to be passing by, the little 17 Hornet will serve you well.

If you think coyotes will be your intended target on a more regular basis, I'd go with a 204 Ruger over any of the 17 cal centerfires, but for a fun gun to just mess around with and shoot ground squirrel size critters, the 17 Hornet is a really fun little gun.

The 17 Hornet is a big step up from the 17 WSM and there is NO comparison between the Hornet and the 17 HMR.  I really like my Bmag 17 WSM and for high volume cheap shooting, particularly on sage rats where you can shoot 1000+ rounds in a day, it's my #1 go to gun, BUT, all of the 17 WSM rifles can sometimes be hit or miss on how well they shoot and all non match grade rimfire ammo can sometimes be the same way and there can be a good amount of variance from Lot to Lot.
