Wormy silver

Went to Riffe lake for a little social distancing and caught a descent silver.  Looked healthy but when I got it home it was like slicing into a tangle of parasites in a fish suit.  Has anyone seen this before?

Totally disgusting.  I didn’t notice any signs on the outside.  And yes- it went in the compost pile.

Not uncommon there. There should be info sheets at the park fish cleaning stations and a few other spots.

If you contact the wdfw they will more than likely tell you that they are co-pods. Several years ago there was an increase in them from the kokanee plants done in the state.  Even lakes that had natural stock were also planted. So now most of the lakes are showing signs of them. I found them in a local lake last summer and when I contacted the bio he said thanks.

Wow. I used to fish riffe a lot but its been about 10 years now. I never ran into that, thats for sure. The picture messed with my gut a little, not sure I would have held my lunch if I was cleaning it...

I fish up there a few times a month and have run across fish like that.  Yes compost pile, or under roses and they do fine. It seems if I remember right it’s like one in ten fish are like that.  Talked to one of the fish biologist they said that because they are freshwater only it is a parasite, it should not bother humans, it is gross and shocking to see it. Because the fish don’t make it to salt waters it does not kill the parasite.

I get a couple of wormy fish every year that look like that out of the ocean. Maybe a different parasite, but looks the same to me.

They just go into the bait bin for shrimp season.
