If your kids’ livestock shows got screwed this year ...
« on: April 15, 2020, 10:09:51 AM »

My kid has done a couple online rabbit shows the last few weeks for fun. They’re not 100% legit but she had fun and had something else to do to keep her occupied. This might be cool and, at a minimum, give them something to do for a while.  All the hard work these kids have done being flushed down the toilet really sucks. If you’re someone who buys a beef cow or hog for the freezer, find one of these kids and help them try and break even by buying one of their animals. They’ve put a bunch of time, work and money into them.

I offered to buy a market hog from a 4h girl this year anticipating a shut down,  but she called and told me the floor price on all their hogs was $2.50/lb live weight!

I said do it!  Someone somewhere stepped up big.

That’s great. People always seem to step up big for these kids.

Our show, at this point, is still on. Hoping it sticks but obviously who the heck knows. I’m not going to hold my breath. It’s on the last weekend of August. The market rabbit kids I work with are proceeding as normal right now, but that’s a much less significant investment than a steer or a hog. Most breed and raise their own rabbits. It’s not a huge deal one way or the other for them.

Ya, our is still scheduled too, but I'm not holding my breath.  If it's cancelled we'll be fine and the girls will get paid.

All Snohomish county 4-h in-person activities cancelled through 6/19. No surprise as they were following the schools. The small animal show my club puts on would have been today and the last show of the year before fair would have been 5/30.
