Poll

So you are bear hunting and you see a large female (without cubs) being chased by a smaller  boar, which bear do you shoot?

Shoot the boar
Shoot the bigger female
Let them both walk

Shooting biggest or first one I see. I don't care if it's a female, we need to knock the population down anyways.

I look at it as the boar would be covering multiple sows making multiple babies per year. Kill one boar and eliminate the potential for multiple breedings. Maybe I'm off.

That could be. But most sows will have two sometimes three. In ten years she could birth three times which means 6-9 cubs. :dunno:

But the boar could cover 6-9 sows in a spring making 6-18 cubs per year. I mean they don’t just breed one sow and call it a rut, right?
Think of it this way. When a state wants to reduce the population what kind of tags do they issue more of? When they want to protect a population what kind of tags do they reduce? Females are the baby makers. You kill a male another male takes his place. Doesn't really change anything. You kill a female and it's guaranteed she won't have any more offspring.

this. You control populations by removing females. Simple explanation would be 10 males and 10 females could have 10 offspring. You kill 5 males and you'll still likely end up with 10 offspring. But if you shot 5 of the females and left the 10 males you'd only get 5 offspring.
It is foolish and wrong to mourn these men.  Rather, we should thank god that such men lived.  -General George S. Patton

:yeah: Another way to look at it is if a Boar mates with a sow and a Boar, which one is adding to the population? Exactly. It’s sience.
Just tend your own and live.

Meats meat. I’ll shoot a doe just as quick as a buck, a cow as quick as a bull and a sow as quick as a boar. I tried for a nice bull elk last year and ended up eating tag soup. Had a blast but my freezer ran empty last month so I dunno if I’ll hold out again haha
May my presence go unnoticed, may my shot be true, may the blood trail be short.

Amen

I wonder if a hot and bothered boar would leave a downed sow?  Might be a awkward situation?

I'm getting that sow, and if the boar wants to take issue with it.... I'll defend myself.

It's an interesting question though,  in Montana, Alaska etc.. you're required to back out if it were a grizz.

Legally speaking, would you have to back out for a black bear?
Could you just walk into a tense and hot situation and just push the boar off the sow and then end up killing him on a charge?  (bluff or otherwise)

I may need to think about this more, this scenario wasn't in my play book.

I get 2 tags in WA. I'm killing whatever presents me the best shot regardless of sex. I'm not even picky about size.

I need to find a way to hunt bears every spring.
A bad day out hunting is better than a good day at work!

I know exactly what you are saying! People will say go to Idaho otc, but I have to believe it’s not close to the quality as wa spring bear.  If your close enough to bait it would be better but our spring bear is a blast.
“In common with”..... not so much!!

The only bears I won't shoot is a sow with cubs or a cub.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Unit 1 doesnt have baiting, hounds or reduced price non res tags, or second tags at all.

I hunted a bit in 4,6,7 this spring for the first time.  Couldnt find a bear, saw virtually no sign.  Everybody i talked to would say something along the lines of, "theres bears there, lot of guys baiting" or "an outfitter runs hounds all over such and such".  I feel like the baiting screws things up regarding bears behaving naturally.  Why would a bear need to be out and about feeding during the day when they can just lay low, then go eat a 50 gallon drum of goodies after dark?  I wont be buying the reduced price 2nd bear tags in idaho again since theyre only usable in the bait / hound units.

Two bears standing next to each other. Same size same color phase. One sow one boar. I’m taking the sow. Bear hunts are not trophy hunts imo. They are predator control/ meat hunts.

Well since both my tags are good for Eastern Washington now I guess my answer would be I’m gonna shoot both. If I only had one tag laughed then I would shoot the first one they gave me a good shot opportunity. If they both offered to get shot then I would be shooting the biggest one

I'd shoot the sow even if she was smaller.   Girls with cubs get a hall pass.
