Late Season Tips
« on: May 25, 2020, 04:31:39 PM »
Anyone hunting NE Washington have any tips for this time of the season? We did a good amount of field edge hen decoys sits and some run 'n' gun to the tune of 15 miles over two days but the birds seem to be pretty lockjaw and not interested in calls after 6 AM or so. I have permission on some private land next weekend and want to maximize my opportunity for the last weekend of the season, so any tips would be appreciated.

Pattern and ambush tactic is how I handle stubborn birds late season and in the fall. If you can pattern them off the roost and position yourself at their morning destination you'll have better early morning success. If you can find a high traffic area while running around you are better served having a seat for a few hours and waiting for them to push through. If the land owner can give you info about when they come and go you will have a leg up. I like to be setup at least an hour before I expect them. Don't shy away from checking valleys and knocking doors. The low land birds were much more consistent this year then the forest birds. Good luck.

I wouldn't spend that much time calling. Talk to locals for tips.

Upside to going late is that there aren't many hunters.

I wasn't expecting anything and I doubled from the same flock on Sunday  :P

I know season is over, but the hens were yelping and the toms were gobbling this morning.

Well, we didn't get em all. This group roosted by the house and flew down into the yard. Big Tom and several Jake's, very quiet after they flew down

The roost me and my buddy have killed the most birds out of was a huge bust. The first day we had 4 hens fly down and feed right through us. Not a gobble within earshot though. Thought it was a fluke and went back on Saturday and sent my buddy to another spot. Had a dozen hens fly down Saturday morning! Again zero gobbles, I'm still a bit at a loss as to what could have been going on there.

My buddy got on em in his spot on Saturday. He was waiting a jake to work in towards him when I came in to join up for the late morning. Bye bye turkey.

Sunday was a mess thanks to the rain. As usual, we bumped 6 jakes on the way out of our permission to hunt land. Definitely gotta work on my butt patience in the late season.
