Turkey hunting question
« on: May 26, 2020, 11:04:01 AM »
So last weekend i was in E WA after birds and they were very vocal Friday and Saturday. Sunday morning they effectively shut down and i didn't hear much at all that day or Monday as if the season light switch shut down gobbling.

Question - have any of you die hard turkey hunters experienced this? It is late season and mostly, were done with Toms by now. This was just very interesting to me. i will say that the gobbling toms were not all that interested up to that very prompt shutoff day and the weather was consistent across the period. I also saw a very early brood with a hen on that sunday morning sneaking around the woods.

Was this several groups of birds or just a flock or two?  Easiest explanation was that they got hunted and basically moved roosts.  Rained pretty hard rain around our place Friday and then broke overcast and chilly Saturday. Sunday was nice. Can't really think weather was much of a factor, but sometimes those birds do just seem to shut up for no obvious reason. Hens are really breaking away to nest now so perhaps that was part of it but I'm still guessing they got spooked.

my grandpa used to call the area "too hot" and we would move to let it settle down. Not sure if area was over hunted, i had no one else within my bubble all weekend and the areas butted against private with no local hunters below. mountain across from me was all private and no shots or hunting pressure at all over there i am certain. I could hear gobblers across valley every time an old rattle bucket truck traveling roadway in a valley between, would fire up toms all up and down the area both mts with bumps/shock gobbles.. was just a weird thing to have them all clam up within hearing range everywhere on the same day.
