If you can't find one, I suggest the Tri-star raptor youth.   I just picked one up for my youth, 9yr girl.

I got a Charles Daly pump 20ga youth for a different kid, its so lightweight the recoil is too much,  I even put weight in the butt stock to absorb the recoil.

The auto of the tristar absorbs a lot more recoil and makes it a lot more pleasant to shoot, and it seems well made.
A strong body makes the mind strong.  As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks.

Congrats to your son for passing hunters ed! My son started out with a youth H&R 28ga, and moved on to a 870 youth 20ga. Worked out well for us.
I felt like a one legged cat trying to bury a terd on a frozen pond!
