Idaho unit one
« on: November 16, 2020, 06:02:03 PM »
Does anyone out there have any tips for Idaho unit one? I have 3 sons(11, 13, 14) holding tags and we spent most of our time Hunting in MT And WA this year and missed the early seasons.  My boys do not care if it’s a Mule deer or whitetail and they’ll shoot any buck they can find.  We’re thinking about trying the Bonners ferry area.  I know it’s thick, steep, and nasty but we like a good challenge.  We like hiking In behind gates but we’re open to any suggestions.  Feel free to Pm me or text 5097602831(Kurt).

Biggest issue is finding an area you can see other than straight down a road.  Muleys are wrapping up the (A)rut . Whitetails will be moving.  Not an easy hunt for most experienced hunters let alone kids and three of them at that.   Goodluck!

It's jungle thick up there.  I honestly couldn't stand hunting up there. Too thick...no glassing, didn't know where we were going and we were early for the WT rut when we went so rattling and stuff was not effective.

Thanks Bone, I’ve had good luck over the years in Western MT so I’m hoping some of my MT experience will translate to this area.  My original plan was to hunt the salmon region, but we just never got there.  Does the unit have lots of gated roads or perhaps a burn area?  Or is a guy better over playing down low on smaller parcels near the crops?   I am a high country guy, but having three kids in tow definitely limits the range.

If you're going in blind, stay low by the crops. Bring a few jugs of whiskey and some smoked salmon and go door knocking. Might find a land owner who will let you take something out of his field.  :twocents:

There are gated roads as it’s a grizz recovery area.  It’s pretty much thick and rugged.  Not sure what this storm did in regards to snow

Head up the Pack River.  Some open country up there.  Muleys and Whitetail.

Yep, it changed this year...
I have hunted the Muleys later by hunting the timber like you would a blacktail and had decent success, but it's THICK and would be super tough with kids.

Good luck!

The pack river had a lot of snow a week ago according to my buddy I haven’t gone up there this year. Might not Be able get around much. Bonner’s has tons of whitetail on the private fields down low but just ok populations up in the hills. You could find some peices of public next to private but it’s small areas mostly. There’s some nice bucks and it’s decent to good hunting in 1 but it is pretty thick might not be ideal for 3 kids depending on what they are used too.

You will be able to find a lot of gated roads though. Most have a 4 wheeler bypass  :chuckle:

A big thank you to everyone who responded. We are headed there Wednesday to catch the tail end of the mule deer season, But we certainly won’t discriminate if we see some Whitetail bucks.
