Any one have a 458 SOCOM

My son is thinking about building one and just looking for pros and cons. He is planning on a short barrel with subs for pigs

I think the ham'r would be a good choice if he would be shooting lighter bullets ( 250-300 ) Both will shoot 500 gr going 1050 though. I think the SOCOM is cheaper to build. Both would be awesome 75 yard pig guns with heavies going sub with a can

I built one in 450 bushmaster.  I chose that over the 458 socom because the 450 bushmaster shoots .452 bullets (same as 45acp and often available in bulk for much cheaper than .458).  Mine is 16" and I shoot subs with a can.

FYI a 230 gr .452 speer gold dot HP, shot subsonic, will pass clear through a coyote broadside at 60 yds and leaves some internal stuff hanging about 3" out the exit hole.

My only experience with this heavy of an AR is the 50 Beowolf....good times blowing holes in bowling pins.

I went with the .450 bushmaster also for the same reason. It makes big holes.

I went back and forth with a 458 and 450. Ended up with the bushmaster and have been super happy with it.

I built a 458 from a stripped lower. It was a fun build and a fun gun to shoot. Never killed any pigs with it but it will knock a 12” square block of wood around. If he is interested in a complete rifle PM me.

458 SOCOM pistol. A nice light weight thumper. The KAK Blade brace is not fun in this package. It hurts...like a blade is cutting. A different brace or a rifle stock would be much better.

Don’t waste your money on sub optimal parts. Get a Tromix barrel and bolt. Or Wilson or anyone other than the lowest cost options. Regular Pmags work and regular Colt 20rd mags work in my experience. The Tromix linear compensator works well.

A friend took a bull elk at 75yds with his 458 SOCOM rifle.

If you want to shoot suppressed, make sure your suppressor choice matches your barrel length choice. The suppressors I’ve looked it for this caliber are rated for 16” minimum barrel length in this caliber. Not good for my 10”.

Sweet rig

Very similar to what he wants to build. Great advice on parts and suppressor choice
Do you know what bullet your buddy was shooting?
