WTB 12g 2 3/4 Turkey Shells
« on: March 01, 2021, 10:32:37 PM »
Bit of a lurker. Looking at getting into turkeys this spring, but I have an older wingmaster with a fixed mod choke and I need to do some pattern checks. Been cruising gunbroker for a deal but haven't found much given the chamber restriction.

Open boxes and loose shells are fine, don't need many. Hoping to score on shells someone might have at the bottom of the safe.

Also interested in experience anyone else has had with older fixed choke guns and turkeys, I have Kent 4 and 6 but neither have dense enough patterns at 40 yards.

Thanks!

With a fixed mod I wouldn't expect to get much of a pattern at 40 yards with 2 3/4" rounds.  Buddies fixed full shot an ok pattern at 35 yards but was much better at 30.  I think that is a more feasible distance for that barrel.  I ended up finding him a factory replacement barrel so he can run a turkey choke next year.

That being said try to find some Longbeard XR 5 shot.

found these
https://www.rogerssportinggoods.com/federal-premium-mag-shok-heavyweight-turkey-shotshells-12ga-2-3-4-1-1-4oz

Thanks for the link to the feds! Always forget to check Rogers for ammo.

Smaller shot size should help, longbeard xr in 5 was the other I was going to check. I'm Seattle area. I'll just keep shots inside whatever range they pattern to, the real answer is probably to pick up another barrel with a remchoke.

Appreciate the help...if anyone's unloading longbeard 5 in the area feel free to PM otherwise these should get me started!

My honest opinion would be to sell the wingmaster.

You can get a really good 3" turkey slayer for under 500.

That would open up a lot more ammo options.

back in the lead shot days I had a 12 gauge short mag that patterned 93% out of my full choke tube.  I still have some of those reloads left in #4.  I am in Moses Lake.

I mean if I get bit by the gobbler bug I could be convinced to pick up something else. Wingmaster is a TB and has some nice figured walnut so I am gonna hang onto it. No doubt I agree with you on more options with a 3in chamber though.

Belly of the beast, Queen Anne. Wife wanted to live in the city till we can afford a house further north. I get funny looks walking guns and bows to the car sometimes...

Pbg and Bill thanks for the offers, might spend more in gas going to get them than they're worth!

I'm gonna try the feds, see how they stack up, and go from there. Blown away by the offers for help, thanks all.
