What's in your wallet, err, Kill Kit?
« on: March 04, 2021, 03:07:36 PM »
What do you cats carry in your hunting pack for processing/tracking big game critters?  If memory serves, this is what I have:

Knives/Saws: Older model Gerber Gator 5.5” fixed blade (or sometimes one of my custom knifes, if not hiking too far that day an I’m being wimpy about the weight); Outdoor Edge Razor-Pro with a few extra blades; SOG folding saw if deer hunting (to cut top knot off), and/or Wyoming Saw 1 (the smaller model, 11” I think) for elk.
Game bags:  VIAM Outdoors (I have four of the large bags for boned out elk meat and two smaller bags for the loins/straps).
Other items: Container of chili powder; small spray bottle of hydrogen peroxide; ½ roll orange surveyors tape; 5x7 sheet of plastic to lay chunks of meat on as they come off the critter; 100’ of quality para cord; two pairs of latex gloves; two commercial grade plastic sacks; compact pull through knife sharpener (for Gerber if needed and BH’s); and one or two chem lights.

Please, share what you have in your kill kit.  Just trying to spark some elky conversation during the long off season :-).

yeah I pretty much have a lot of the same things along with zip ties and TP...only other thing i have is a couple rolls of long cut wintergreen Grizzly.  First of August i buy a couple rolls and stash them everywhere...packs, in my truck and in my jeep and in a pocket of any coat i may use.  I've been without before and it was a terrible experience.  After the first of each year it is an "easter egg" hunt going through all my stuff finding 1/2 used dried out cans.  Dried out chew is better than no chew packing out elk quarters after dark...at least until you can find that bottle of Crown

Enough gamebags to do the job, a contractor bag, havalon and a few extra blades.

A fairly lite Weight skinning knife and boning knife. A few trash bags, couple gallon bags, half a dozen latex gloves, a small hand towel, a emergency blanket/tarp, and for elk 6 black ovis game bags and 100’ or so of ultra lite guide line cord. My kill kit is all vacuum sealed to make it very small and compact and I only cut it open when an animal is down.

Easy question to answer.  Real men also carry another knife on a lanyard.

The knives aren’t vacuum sealed. Just the kill kit. I would have knives in my pack no matter what I’m doing. The kill kit is a all in one package I just throw in if I’m going hunting. Everything stays dry and compact.

A knife always.   If in the backcountry, a game bag and a folding saw.   I like antlers but i refuse to carry out a head.   probably some parachute cord.

I'm old. I hunt within a couple miles of the truck and keep a kill pack in there and the meat cart in the back. In my pack, I do keep a couple of razor's edge knives, 100' of rope, surveying tape, extra headlamp, etc.

For deer and elk I keep the following in my pack,

5 disposable game bags in 1 Zip Lock bag (Doubles as a seat on wet logs).
A pair of disposable latex gloves
Double bladed folding knife (6" Shrade)  (Spare 3" in pocket)
Small pull through type sharpening steel
100' or so of parachute cord
Folding bone saw to remove antlers
Roll of ribbon
5 precut paracords 30" long with an eye hook at one and and loop at other (Aids in easy hanging by myself)
large plastic trash bag
Extra folded blue paper shop towels in plastic.

Above is just for processing, I also have a few flashlights, spare undershirt, paper towels, calls, a whistle, food/water, GPS units and various other sundry items which collectively weighs more than I care to discuss or admit as the case may be.

Off subject;
I have emptied my pack and tried to lighten it for years and it still weighs to much.
This is a yearly discussion at camp, we all agree that what we have, we really should carry.
If is obvious that the only weigh to lighten the load is to purchase a lighter rifle and pack.

Some of these kill kits are huge!

Hot weather and far back I use those synthetic game bags, paracord and outdoor edge razor pro and 2 gloves, but I only glove my left hand and I tend to rip them pulling on the hide, so carry spares.  I might switch to a more rugged glove and use wipes to keep the elk stink off the glove/meat.

I'll carry a wyoming saw for hunts in the timber.

Hang over a creek and shuttle is the game plan.

Late hunts I carry less, just enough to hang nearby and shuttle.

For me its a set of game bags (bomb or fullsize), an 80 liter dry bag, havalon and blades, sometimes a benchmade altitude.
